    This is bipartisan folks. A few 10s of police facing 500 people (half protesting - half in support of the President), with the President staying in the area? You're damn right the cops are gonna be nervous. This has "Powder Keg" written all over it...

    Yeah, this is a big deal over nothing. Just because Linus hasn't "blessed" the patch, does not mean it can't and won't be used. That's the beauty of Open Source! They can maintain their patch, and release it as an add-on to the mainstream kernel.

    There is really nothing to see here....

    Wow. Gem of a comment in the middle of a pile of crap that is slashdot...

    I think there is a lot to what you say here, especially with todays "Gotcha" politics. Bush could walk on water, but $diety help him should he mis-speak or have less than perfect grammar! Kerry could have marched through Vietnam naked and won the war all by himself, but $diety forgive him if he changes his mind on the color tie he wears.

    Each side jumps on the others minor flaws like a pit bull. And the media just loves it.

    Genes generally don't just "cross" into wild populations, so if the GM trees have unforeseen problems it won't affect any natural forests.

    I didn't think anyone's freedom of speech was being violated? Or are you yet another person who thinks that everytime somebody doesn't get their way their right to free speech is violated?

    Here's a hint. If their freedom of speech had been violated, we probably wouldn't be talking about this right now...

    Not to mention that in Massachusetts we have a state income tax as well. And due to a referendum that passed there is actually an option on our state income tax to pay at a higher percentage. This way those people who are in favor of a higher tax can pay it if they like.

    Guess which senator(s) from Massachusetts pay it? If you guessed "Neither", you'd be correct!

    FWIW less than 1% of 1% (roughtly) actually opted to pay higher. I think it works out to a few thousand people. So much for the bleeding hearts...

    Looks like it's the Michigan Lakes area. That's a heavy industrial area in the US (steel mostly I think).

    With such things as ice ages and over heated tropical periods. Now, I'm not arguing against "Global Warming(TM)", but do not pretend the Earth is as it is now, and was perfectly "stable" for millions of year. Quite the contrary actually.

    But, as anyone who lives in the city will ask, where do they all *park*? Traffic in the city isn't *half* as bad as parking in the city is. I suppose roads could be converted to runways/parking lots, but only after "normal" cars are obsolete...

    I think the prize is more psychological than anything else. It's not so much about the money (AFAIK the X-Prize didn't cover the cost of building/flying SpaceShipOne).

    It's the *challenge* that matters. I say "I bet $500,000 that nobody can build a flying car" and it gets attention. Now there will be people out there to prove me wrong. Like the space race between the USA and USSR. And there wasn't even a prize! Just the competition and the challenge.

    That's what the X-prize does. Creates a challenge, and competition. We humans operate best in that environment.

    Wha-? Are you serious? Sidewalks covered with snowbanks, but roads are clear. Would you rather be on the slippery roads ona bicycle or in a car?

    Why is there a ton of Slashdotters who just can't realize that not everyone wants to ride a friggin bike to work?

    One of the best stouts I've ever had was an "Espresso Stout" served at a John Harvards brewery in Cambridge Massachusetts (USA). It had some caffeine due to the espresso beans. Fantastic stuff though. Thick and heavy, with a pleasant aftertaste. Mmmm..

    I believe that's what the Linux Standards Base people are trying to fix. I've spoken to them at Linux world. Their goal is to eventually be able to have developers say "This program can run on any distro LSB1.0 compliant."

    Somehow I don't think multiple flights to LEO carrying the fuel for a launch from LEO to the Moon is going to be more efficient... Not only do you have to burn enough fuel to get all the 'other' fuel to LEO, as well as the lunar lander et al, but you'd also be bringing back up the shuttle or other carrier each time as well. How would this be 'cheaper'?
