Not just in the UK and not just the film industry. I ran into this closer to home, Between Canada and the US of A.

I was looking for a copy of Win2000 Professional Upgrade. A quick call to the local dealer produced a price of 300.00 CDN (206.00USD).

Next step was to look at microwarehouse.com where an upgrade is being offered for $169.95 USD less a 70.00 USD mail in rebate for a net cost of 99.00 USD (143.60 CDN).

Microwarehouse offers on their Canadian web site the same package at 308.00 CDN (212.00 USD)

I tried ordering 4 copies and was told by Microwarehouse US that they were not allowed to ship to Canada by MS.

So a US user pays 99.00 US vs a Canadian user paying 212.00 US. There is no rebate on the Canadian package.

So Why look at the UK for price gouging when we can find it so much closer to home.

Ahh just as an aside i also have to ad 15.51% in Gst and PSt taxes on my purchases locally.

Intel is the new Fudmeister these days taking the crown from MS. They seem to be living by press releases and yet where is the product. Have you tried buying any of the new 700 Mhz + chips lately or better yet since they were announced. They can issue all the PR they want and announce new CPu's but where is the product in the pipeline?

Witness Dell's comments on product availability from Intel. Better yet in Canada as i dont know the full availability other what i read in the press, i notice that a P3-500 actually has increased by 120.00 Cad in the last 2 weeks at the Distributor level. The reason given is NO PRODUCT.
I was talking to a large OEM in Canada this past week. Guess where they are buying CPU's from?

Soooooooo let Intel announce all they want but unti its in the piplelie and readily available to OEM's and VAR's its just vapour.

Kinda reminds me of the old commercial..... Where's the beef?

My only concern about this merger at the present is the investment by Chipzilla aka Intel in Valinux and the non support of AMD chips.

Is it a coincidence that as soon as Intel invested AMD was not mentioned?

Given the shortages of Intel CPu's these days and the general availability of Intel, one wonders just how much pro Intel VALinux is.

Meanwhile i have reservations of any site owned or supported by Software/Hardware Companies. Historically there has been suble influence.

To now /. has been able to basically freewheel. Now despite protestations to the contrary, there will always be that nagging doubt.

I am a former suit, and know how marketing and PR influence other divisons.

Ahh this is the same outfit Corel made a deal with last year to include WP8 with all their Motherboards. The press releases from Corel came spewing forth as they do now.

The Present PC Chips boards are a substandard performer found in the very Low End systems. At 120 CDN for a combo including sound Net and Modem and integrated video.

Mfg problems are evident as the ram sockets vary from batch to batch and a Sledge Hammer is required to install ram on some of the borads.

Seriously, The CD's wont be of much use on the current production batch with the onboard video with shared ram. Even Caldera 2.3 cant install on these babies.

Mind you i am prejudiced. Corel can sign all the deals they want to include their product but will this result in increased use of their products only time will tell. FWIW OEM Corel Office 2000 OEM CD's are going at $20 Cdn each. Shows you what the product is worth.

  10. Corel and Cowpland on Corel Without Cowpland? · · Score: 1

From where i sit i wonder if Cowplands departure is such a bad thing. A bit of History is needed.

Back in the late 70's the Province of Ontario created the Ontario Centres for Technology. Electronics was located in Ottawa, CAD/CAM in Cambridge, Ontario near Allan Bradley, Robotics in Peterbourough Ont near the GE plant, Automotive i believe in Chatham and Natural Resources in Northern Ontario.

Initially it was a shoe string Operation with grants to Ontario Companies that embraced new Technology as well as some low cost loans. Ottawa got MicroElectronics partially because noboy saw a real future for micro electronics ( the wisdom of civil servants) and because Digital Canada was there.

This is why Corel developed ad grew in Kanata. The re were grants etc to encourage these companies to grow.

Cowpland raised Corel and as the 80's and early 90's passed saw an unlimited futre. But Cowpland has made many misteps along the way. If as was stated by several posters Corel was in the US there would have been a changing of the guard a long time ago.

As for Cowpland being charged.....Lets look at it this way.... Except for Bre-X name the last insider trading charges filed in Canada. Ummmmm Ummmmmm. Unless its so blatant it passes. The Globe and Mail just did a report on insider trading and how incestous the financial community is and the lack of enforcement. Suffice it to say Corel and Cowpland are not looked on in favoir by the Canadia investment community. I just finished scanning thru Bell Charts and found a total of 25,000 shares of corel held by Canada's captive Mutual Funds. This speaks for itself.

Now for Corel and Linux.....remember the storm over the License on the Beta?

ow does Corel make money from linux? Its an attempt to granb the brass ring and show the investment community see we are in Linux we are hot we are there today leading the the pack on technology. Look up Corel's press releases when the Linux Beta went out.... More drum beatng than you can imagine.

Nooo i think Corel needs a new CEO a man of vision a technocrat and not a flamboyant huckster.

What will happen is anybodies guess, but as for Corel distribution of Linux, it will prolly go the same way WP is distributed in Canada, with system Boards just to get the product out.

  11. IBM supports Linux? on IBM Promises Even More Linux Support · · Score: 1

Reading the article and having long done business with IBM, i'll tale it with a grain of salt. Yes in the near term its a good thing for Linux, but untill i hear Louis Gerstner in a major address say the magic words....that Linux is a strategic product, Linux will always be a monentary product IBM uses to establish or rather re-establish its product line. We have been there with many IBM products...OS2, Java, networking cards, Comm Devices. All products fall by the wayside or are abandonned or sold off; unless they are of strategic importance to IBM. IBM is there to make $$ and dont forget it. At this point in time it suits IBM to support Linux for whatever reasons be they giving MS a slap, satisfy a client demand, but rember IBM is there for its own products and unless a cash stream is established support can evaporate... not openly but in typical IBM fashion. So for the moment cheer and enjoy that Big VBlue is supporting Linux, but lets revist this in a year or 2 years time. BTW i still support OS2 for various financial Institutions, and there is support from IBM for Large commercial customers, but try getting a new device driver from IBM. Good Luck. ..

Henceforth all leave applications were classified as classified at that base. So what is classified anyway?
