I live in Iceland, and here there is the company DeCode genetics. They are building a huge database with the medical histry of every Icelander in it, to be able to trace "bad genes".
the funny thing is, they're a privatly owned company and still they are entitled to go through all your medical records at their own will and put it in a database
sure, they say it'll be secure but what if they start selling info on you to insurance companies? imagine this: you: Hi, I'm (some name) and I'd like a life insurance. insurance rep.:well... I'm sorry... it's gonna cost you (insert obscene amount here) because your family has a record of heart failiurs.
these are just my thoughts... check it out for yourself, I think this has made it to most news medias in Europe and America, also check out www.ie.is
All they really had to do would be to offer the US a little dicount on software and then they'd be in the green. I that wouldn't work they could always use the "give us what we need or US computing will be back to stone age" phrase. As was pointed out in a slashdot article not so long ago (I'm to lazy to find it and link to it) Silicon Valley has a vast resource of people who would be brilliant in politics. I think Silicon Valley could do very well for itself simply by either threat or diplomacy for food and other necessities. I think Russia or China f.x. would happily assist Silicon Valley with whatever they want for some up-to-date software. And they cant exactly invade Silicon Valley can they, being in the middle of the USA. If USA would try to invade Silicon Valley they'd misteriously lose control of everything remotly connected with computers. I can see it now, thousands of US troops throwing stones in a random manner at people with pocket protectors (I think military supplies might get sent to Alaska "by computer mistake")
I like this idea... I think this will be the next revolution (since the Silicon) We might be looking at a new era in computing history... Kinda neat, what what?
ok, I belive that companies should be breought to court for their mistakes.. this shouldn't be some sort of "untouchable" business.. BUT you have to draw the line somwhere, this lawsuit is just plain silly. Like he said.. it's a bunch of ambulance chasers
btw. does anyone else think that maybe it really DOES pay to be a lawyer? I mean, you're one of the most hated people on earth, but for this kind of money.. maybe that's not so bad
ethical... heeeellll no! you see... so long as the employee signs it, it's legit, I think.. but the company can't force you to sign. And if they fire you for not signing, then you can sue them.. unfortunatly, legit and ethical are a far cry apart. I for one would never sign one of those damn things.. it's like signing your own industrial death warrant

I mean, I like it as much as the next Linux geek when M$ gets bashed. But let's look at the facts. When the major corporations (Intel, IBM etc.) have gotten Microsoft out of their way and another OS (f.ex. Linux) has become dominant in the market what insures that the giants wont turn on us then. I mean, I would expect that their main mission is to become OS independant, wheather it's Windows OR Linux.
I really don't see what's bad about Linux becoming a "gaming box" alognside with being a regular workstation. I mean... it's a lot more fun playing quake ona linux box thatn a windows box isn't it?
I though that anything that lets Linux gain a wider acceptance would be good
They are just sooooo wrong. Not applying 21 security patches to the Red Hat System (and those patches were readily available from the Red Hat errata) because that was something "a real life sysadmin would never do" but still they applied the SP 5 for NT... as if that's something a sysadmin would do? This is just way bad... I smell another Mindcraft here
are somewhat of a dissapointment to me. I thought that the "great nation of USA" should be a little more cultivated than to still be afraid of the "Red Danger".
Can't you people still see it.. socialism, communism, marxism... it's all just governments... the people that populate the country in question are still humans, and diserve nothing else than to be treated as such

I actually read somewhere that if Silicon Valley was an independant country, it would be the worlds 11th largest economy system :o) how about that.
