Personally my impression is that there are good jobs and bad jobs in every line of work. I can't speak for anyone but myself but I don't do what I love. I do something I'm good at, that pays well, at a friendly employer. It was definitively mostly a pragmatist choice, a "good enough" work that lets me have have substantial financial muscle to pursue other things. I wouldn't do anything I hate or that'd eat 60+ hours of my week for a living, I also wouldn't do work I love and eat Ramen noodles and live in beat up closet of an apartment. The key is trying to live a good life 24 hours a day, not to have one part of your life that sucks and one that doesn't.

Wish I had mod points. I fully agree and am in a very similar job/life situation.

    Yes. At Wal-mart.

For most people, education does matter. It helps give them a clue and a credential that opens doors. Varying degrees of that education may be less relevant. However, it's important overall. It also helps to not have a PhD in philosophy.

My anecdotal evidence begs to differ. I do have a bachelor's in IS (after failing out of one school and taking an addition 6 years at another school), but that degree has not affected my current "successful" career path whatsoever. Compared to my "peers" I am equally, if not more, successful as they are (assuming "quality of life" and income are fair indicators of success).

I am currently an IT consultant. If I made different choices earlier in my life, I could easily see myself as a high level manager/director type in a fast food or retail industry, regardless of my education. As many other posts of stated, success factors are more dependent on drive, work ethic and possibly intelligence. Personally, I hated school and was an average student at best. When it comes to a job, I've generally been well above average compared to my peers. It didn't matter if I was the dishwasher, salesperson or a sysadmin, I typically became one of the top employees in that position. Money apparently has always been a much better motivator for me than "enlightenment" from an education. I also find it interesting that many of my friends with specialized engineering degrees have mostly ended up as software developers, consultants or something else that didn't require the specialized degree they received.

It's also worth 100% of the MSRP although I would have been upset if I had paid that price (and likely would have if it was the only price option). Assuming there is free DLC in the near future, MSRP doesn't look nearly as bad as more DLC becomes available.

And I have no problems waiting to play games either. I just finished HL2 about 3 weeks ago. I think it came free with a video card I purchased nearly two years ago. Great game and now I can purchase episodes 1 & 2 at a fraction of their original cost. About $8 each now I think.

P2 was worth the price, Civ5 not so much. I actually got a pretty good deal on P2. $30 plus a $10 Best Buy gift card I think? So I got that and How to Train Your Dragon BluRay for $35 total after it was all said and done. Portal 2 is a great game and I am glad I got such a good deal on it. The $45 - $50 a lot of people paid is a steep price for such a short game however.

I guess I fall into the super cheap crowd these days. I've payed the high price of games (SC2, CIV5 and Portal 2 being the most recent) for many years and very few have been worth the price. I finally kicked my MMO habit a several months ago I have been buying a backlog of games that are 3-4 years old for $5 each as they pop up on Steam. I think I like my new game purchasing model. I doubt I will pay more than $100 a year for games going forward and will probably never play through half of the ones I do buy.

So does an MCSE require a PE license?

Your links are very true for jobs that require a specific engineering license or certification to practice that profession or do a specific type of work. I agree with you 100% on that point. Those are typically regulated fields with specific requirements to practice their particular skill (similar to Drs and lawyers).

IT is not regulated and those rules/laws/certs don't apply to Systems Engineers, Microsoft Engineers, Cisco Engineers, Building Engineers, etc. You claim that legally I cannot call myself a Systems Engineer. I can and there are no laws that state that I cannot. Hundreds of thousands of job postings and resumes and people call themselves engineers without breaking the law.

And as a Systems Engineer I am very well aware of Google. Actually, I think I might call myself a VMware Engineer this week. I'll wait for Johnny Law to take me downtown now....

Please provide a government document, a code, ordinance, statute, etc (you know, a law) that states a person cannot call themselves an engineer. Please provide a specific instance where this is a punishable offense.

If I call myself a Dr. and try to open up a medical practice I will be fined and jailed. If I open up a consulting shop and call myself a Software/Microsoft/Cisco/whatever engineer I am simply a small business owner and never fined nor jailed.

I think your problem is the definition of an "engineer." And I really don't care what your definition is. My point, and most others on this site, is that pretty much anyone can (legally) call themselves an engineer without facing any consequences from the law. Whether you feel they can call themselves an engineer or not is moot and a subjective point.

Where I am calling yourself an engineer without a license can get you and the company you work for heavily fined. It is a regulated title just like doctor and lawyer.

Citation please. And not from Wikipedia or Museumstuff. If your statement were true the US Government would be debt free based on all of the fines they would be issuing for this infringement. It is standard practice for US companies to offer various engineering positions. Simply search for "engineer" on your favorite job search site.
