My anecdotal evidence disagrees with yours. I see people everyday of various ages, ethnicity, etc who still wear wristwatches. Sure, sales might have gone down in recent years (economy perhaps?), but a wristwatch has never been out of style in my lifetime at least. I think most people would find it amusing to see someone walking down the street in bell-bottoms today; you would be hard pressed to for anyone to find it amusing that someone was wearing a wristwatch and find their "fashion" outdated because they were wearing one. I'd be curious about your sense of fashion? Regardless of what it is, I have no doubt a nice wristwatch would complement the style nicely.

I'm 36 and I own an analog wristwatch. I've owned several over my lifetime as well. My 5 year old son is familiar and will continue to be familiar with analog wristwatches as most everyone in his extended family wears one. How is this retro, unique or something terribly interesting because it has moving parts and is not digital? Watches have always been fashionable and (IMHO) will continue to be for all generations for the rest of my life. It's not like we're talking about 8-tracks, cassette tapes and to some extent vinyl for example. Those devices will definitely be retro to my kid as they have never (and probably never will be) a part of his life.

There is a hipster resurgence for vinyl yes, but that is rather niche. I think music is an interesting example though. Because a lot of people I know, including myself, who swore they would never get rid of their physical CD collection and replace it with only digital music, have actually ended up doing so. And with the current sales trend I see that accellerating. I'm not at the stage where I see myself dropping my book shelves for my Kindle anytime soon, but as I said that about music too and turned out proving myself wrong - a couple of more apartment moves and they might be left in the moving boxes like the music and DVD collection finally did.

Until I can scan my physical books into an e-reader (for free), I won't be replacing my current library. I didn't have to repurchase the 300 CDs or so I own to put them into a digital format.

  16. Re:New Books Maybe Old Books Never on The End of Paper Books · · Score: 1

Sure, the people who have book collections NOW won't give them away after getting a Kindle, but what about your children or grandchildren who never have a need for a physical book collection to start with? If they can get everything they want digitally, why should they ever invest in a physical book?

I'm guessing you don't have kids? I'm sure an e-reader is sufficient for standard, run of the mill paperbacks and hardbacks that most adults read, but my 5 year old has close to 100 books in his collection (about half inherited) and they are of all shapes and sizes. From pop-ups, to books with textures, puzzles , scratch and sniff, etc (I won't even go into coloring books and such). Even a new color e-reader would not do justice for 90% of the children's books we own. Perhaps technology will be able to adapt at some point, but I have a feeling that children's books will be the industry leader of paper based books for a long long time.

Sounds like a similar experience for me as well. 5 of us play on a private server and have created all sorts of neat structures and share materials as necessary without messing with each other. We've created massive castles, Old West style towns, a nearly to scale soccer stadium, massive suspension bridges, intricate mine cart paths, etc. We reset every 4-6 weeks as well, depending on Notch's releases and if anything significant is added (and to see what new biomes the RNG creates for us). We've also had a short spell where everyone was an op and could create whatever we needed on the fly (it's generally more satisfying to "earn" your materials however). As the poster below, played around with bukkit (mostly for the powered minecarts, which are now available as a part of the core game and elevators). My kid, who is not quite old enough to play, loves watching me play and ordering me around to make various things. I also typically do my core mining while sitting on the couch, half paying attention to whatever my wife puts on the TV. :-) I find it very soothing for whatever reason.

My biggest wish in MC would be the ability to assign permissions to individual blocks. So basically a starting world everything would be "neutral," but as I build my home base or whatever I could assign the blocks I put down as read only; no one else could destroy them. You could then create common areas that multiple people could create/destroy for communal type areas. If there was such a system, I would probably venture out into random servers instead of staying on my own server or playing single player.

That's quite a scary thought actually. Google will potentially know the browsing habits of my kid starting around age 6 (or so) throughout the rest of his life. I wonder how valuable that type of data could be to Google? Could be a pretty interesting history lesson in 50 years to track someone's browsing history and how it relates to events in their real life. Eek.

I didn't notice a change at first, since anyone with a PS3 who has seen the UI it's been using for the last few months should immediately recognize the new design. It actually works pretty well on the PS3, since you can use your controller to navigate it decently quickly. With a mouse, however, the rollovers are comically slow, and the lack of visible ratings (Netflix's strong suit) is a massive oversight. But, the fact that this UI has been in use on the PS3 for months may be why Netflix says they've been testing the UI for an extended period of time without major complaint.

I almost exclusively stream Netflix from my PS3. I hate the interface. I always browse the movie selection on my laptop and dump movies into my instant queue for viewing on the PS3 as it is infinitely easier this way. I am not sure how I will handle going forward.
