The new design isn't totally horrible, but I think it's somewhat worse than the current design. It wastes far too much space and the right-hand bar with polls, etc. is too wide. It almost overwhelms the story content.

Wow, things are different in Canada. In most cases, we're required to give reasonable notice and severance when letting someone go. Even when I've gotten rid of people right away, I've always given them at least two weeks' severance. IMO, it's a smart business decision because it reduces the likelihood of vengeful lawsuits or worse.

  6. Depends on the employment agreement on Ask Slashdot: When Is It OK To Not Give Notice? · · Score: 2

I own a company and I always put in the employment agreement a requirement of 15 days' notice if the employee wishes to leave, and 15 days' notice if I wish to terminate the employee without cause (with an option to simply pay the employee without requiring him/her to show up for work.)

If a really unhappy employee wanted to leave right away, I'd consider waiving the requirement, but I put it in as protection for me so I'm not scrambling to replace a valuable employee with no notice.

If your kid can't learn an office suite on his/her own (at least to the level of a casual user) then that kid has bigger problems than not getting the right subjects in school.

  13. Tough question on Orson Scott Card Pleads 'Tolerance' For Ender's Game Movie · · Score: 1

On the one hand, I don't think people's art should be boycotted because of the artist's personal views. On the other hand, I would hate to see money I've paid to see the art going (in part) to support a cause I oppose.

I won't see the movie because I'm not an Orson Scott Card fan. However, if I were, I would also donate the price of the admission to a marriage equality organization. In this way, I would in some small measure be counteracting any damage that the price of my movie ticket might do.

I think positive support for organizations that promote gay marriage is more productive than boycotting Card's work.

I agree that no laws should be passed that force e.g. a supermarket to use specific weights or measures.

L/100km measures fuel consumption. The lower the consumption, the better. Also, you don't end up dividing by zero for electric cars and bikes. 0 L/100km is easier to handle than infinity MPG.

It's all a matter of what you're used to. The US is one of the most conservative and reactionary societies on earth, so I expect it'll still be using Imperial units 50 years from now and probably still retain the penny when you need ten thousand of them to buy a loaf of bread.
