Garbage collection requires quite a lot of upper-body strength, and on average men have more upper-body strength than women. The same applies to quite a few other physically-intensive jobs.

Computer science doesn't require much physical strength. So something about the profession or the work environment is making women not choose it, and I think we should make an effort to figure out what it is. If it's something we can fix, we should because we need to attract as many good people as possible to the profession.

I think piracy is theft. It's not the content that's being stolen, it's the forgone revenue that is being stolen.

I certainly am no fan of the current copyright enforcement regime, but I do think that content creators and owners should be able to control the terms by which their works can be obtained. The market will sort out those who over-charge, but piracy distorts the market and hurts all content-creators.

I'm thinking, WTF? Is it 1875 or something? That's so quaint!

I bet not. Most of the money taken in by religious institutions doesn't go to charity; it goes to maintaining churches, etc. And given the incalculable harm caused by religion over the millenia, I'd say religions are deeply in the whole when it comes to being in debt to society.

  21. It's not simply a matter of modulating the frequency to make a woman's voice sound like a man's or vice-versa. There are a lot more differences than that between men and women's speech. Women tend to change their pitch over a wider range than men, who tend to use a narrower range of pitches. They also tend to have breathier voices than men and way less resonance. So it could be that the altered voices just sounded weird or "off" to the interviewers.
