  1. Re:Other Debian distro's? on HP Announces Support for Debian Linux · · Score: 1

My guess is they are supporting as little as possible (just the stock, stable, vanilla, debian) so they don't go screwing things up. Good for them. As much as I abhor their Home PCs, their servers and corporate hardware are just fine with me.

  2. What kind of games? on Can a Gaming Cafe be Successful? · · Score: 5, Informative

You didn't specify what kind of games your cafe would feature. I assume you mean computer games (WoW, CS:S, et al). There is a place in my area that does very well in that market, but only because of variety.

I'd recommend offering something aside from computer games. Set up some tables for Magic: The Gathering, D&D, Battletech, Warhammer, etc so you aren't only catering to the "I don't have broadband" market. This way you'll become a social gathering place for geeks. You may even consider starting a card/miniature trading deal in your shop where you buy things from your customers and sell them back.

That's my advice. But, then again, I have NO business sense.

  3. RTS? on Endgame- Google Maps RTS (beta) · · Score: 0

Page isn't loading for me (/. already?) so I'll admit I'm speaking without R-ingTFA, but is it an RTS?

As in a Real Time Strategy? As in a Real-Time Risk. That sounds like pure chaos. I like the concept of a Google Maps game, but it would sound better as a turn-based (a la www.lastknights.com perhaps) game IMO.

  4. Re:Space Aged on James A. Van Allen - Dies at 91 · · Score: 1, Interesting

People won't care about outer space until we can get a competent group of people to create a space program (here's hoping South Africa http://cooltech.iafrica.com/features/870976.htm) that:

    (a) Doesn't waste all kinds of public funds (1.6bil requested for fy2007 http://www.nasa.gov/about/budget/index.html) (b) Isn't surrounded by an aura of bad PR.

Until either that happens, or NASA pulls off something incredible to regain the respect of millions of people, our feet will be planted firmly on the ground.

It's a shame, really, I've been hoping to reenact the plotline from Firefly at some point in my lifetime...

  6. Agreed on Apple vs Microsoft- Who's the Copycat? · · Score: 0, Redundant

I agree that Apple's fascination with Vista is childish. The posters claiming Leopard to be "Vista 2.0", and endless claims about MS copying them. Bah. Apple could really be very good; it's a shame they have to be such elitists.

But, yes, today's phones truely are so much better than phones from even last year. It makes me wonder if we are headed for a wall soon...

  11. Over-ambitious on Sony Struggles To Define the PSP · · Score: 1

The PSP, while a nice idea, failed because it tried to be all things to all people.

I have an mp3 player for music, a pda for movies, and (now) a ds for portable gaming. The UMD format failed hardcore, and the game catalog is lackluster.

The main problem with sony these days is that they lack focus. Brand name loyalty aside, the PS3 would share a similar fate. The mere fact that it is a PlayStation will have every male 18-35 lining up to buy.
