  1. Re:Appropriate venue? on Administration Ignored Bin Laden Intel · · Score: 1

Makes about as much sense as scoring accusation, innuendo and conspiracy theories as "insightful".

When I first started reading /. it was for one reason. To read an aggregate of technology news and commentary in a forum that existed no where else on the net. I am seriously wondering about the sanity of the moderators of this forum when they post flame-bait pieces like this disguised as news.

I am not a staunch Bush supporter either. In fact, I could list a number of things that irk me about the current admin, but there are plenty of other forums where this could and should be hashed out. I would have the same problem with The Science Channel showing a piece on 9/11. That belongs on one of the History Channels. When I come to /. I want "news for nerds" not "news for political analysts".

As for my first comment, the /. scoring system is meaningless unless you want to consider the resemblance to a popularity contest. Why bother?

  2. Lack of parenting. on Suit Blames Videogames for Homicides · · Score: 1

Plaintiffs are once again expecting us to believe that their "excellent" parenting skills were undermined by a fantasy. We've heard this before. Remember the Columbine/Doom suit that helped create the ESRB? When a child loses touch with reality to the point that he/she is able to transition from fantasy frag to real blood, then there is alot more wrong with this child's psyche that mere video game obsession. Take the video game out of the picture for a moment. Does anyone really honestly believe that Cody Posey would not have found other means to exact his revenge on his father? Our society has many, many examples of violent role models to choose from.

Did violence exist before it was depicted in video games or other forms of entertainment? Of course it did. Do violent depictions exacerbate an already warped mind? Possibly. Do these depictions cause a person who is well grounded in respect and honor to somehow flip over to the other side? If so, we should have hundreds if not thousands of videogame related murders to comment on every week. Are we to ignore the other potential causes, such as Eric Harris'(Columbine shooter) use of the prescription antidepressant Luvox? Was Charles Manson a product of society or created from the lifestyle of a whore mother? What else in Cody Posey's life contributed to his decision to kill his family? I'm sure as the weeks progress, and after the ESRB is tightened yet again and the lawyers have collected their bounty, we'll find out once again what the real reason was, and I doubt the answer will be because of GTA: Vice City. As for the families involved, this is yet one more example of someone expecting others to take responsibility for their own lack of parenting.

Nothing irks me more than to compare this to the gun debate. IMO, this comparison does to damage the argument for video games. Guns do have the potential to do great harm regardless of the intentions of the individual. But no matter how hard I try, I can't seem to get those bullets to fly out of my computer screen. I suppose if I rip out my hard drive and throw it hard enough, I could cause someone a nasty bump.

P.S.: I just finished playing GTA: San Andreas. Anyone else? What say we all get together and go cap some fools? No? Thought not.

Some of you may remember the CD pen? A green magic marker that you use to color the edges of your CDs so the laser beam wouldn't leak out the edges? Check out http://www.halfbakery.com/idea/Audiophile_20Hearin g_20Test for details. Or how about the CD demagnitizer (http://www.gcaudio.com/cgi-bin/store/showProduct. cgi?id=190) to remove that annoying light-bending magnetic field from your precious collection. I could go on, but not without deviating more from the thread topic.

Notwithstanding that the average person sees/hears no difference between these "tweaks" and the normal off-the-shelf fair, companies like this are lucrative enough in that small niche market to make a profit. People with "ophile syndrome" will never be convinced that their perceptions are somehow flawed. As a former manager of an audiophile store and a technician of 30 years, I can attest to that. The more you argue, the more they will be convinced that you are unable to appreciate the finer points of whatever they are into.

Is this net card snake oil? Probably. Is it stupid to pay $279 for a network card to gain 1-2 FPS advantage? I won't buy one, but value is a matter of perception (however flawed). Yes *ophiles are a curious bunch with deep pockets. The extension to the computer market was inevitable. I'm just surprised no one thought of this marketing angle sooner.
