  1. I wouldn't. . . not yet on Would You Use a Free Netbook From Google? · · Score: 1

I wouldn't be then again after playing around with Chromium OS for the past couple of days, I've found it very limiting. And I'm not talking about PhotoShop or stuff like that. My reasons are

    1. I have TBs of data. Only about 10% of it is in the cloud so most of my data would be unavailable to me. Even if I could nfs mount a volume what I am going to use to view my images and videos? A browser? Weak in my opinion.
    2. I have a netbook right now and one of the best uses for it is Skype video. Right now I don't see anything in the plans to support something like this.
    3. Another use that I have for my netbook is as a eBook reader. Will Amazon or B&N release readers for this platform?

One thing that I wonder is if Google will release a port of Adobe Aire. Another thing that I miss in Chrome OS are the Twitter and Remember the Milke aire apps that have the data in the cloud but have functionality way beyond what a web page can do (even with HTML5)

I think you hit the nail on the head with your post. Cost is the exact reason why this NoSQL movement came up. Look who are pushing it the most. Internet companies. When they started to grow, do you think they had millions in license fees to Oracle or Microsoft? They all went with MySQL to start with and then started to have growing pains as their datasets grew larger. These internet companies learned from their Web 1.0 brothers. Its better to pay a few highly skilled engineers to come up with some new technology than to pay millions in OS and DBMS license fees.

To me this reminds me so much of the Unix (Solaris, AIX, etc ) vs Linux debates in the late 90s and early 00s.

Has anyone actually tried to use this Sharepoint Export tool? I browsed around Google's Sites API pages but I can't seem to find any new tool or reference to SharePoint. They have nice import/export tool for Sites (http://code.google.com/p/google-sites-liberation/) but I don't see anything for SharePoint. Am I missing something?

Didn't ATM (the network technology not cash machines) solve almost all these issues back in the '90s. CBR, VBR, rtVBR, UBR. If it wasn't so complex to setup and maintain. This is a function of how Ethernet and TCP/IP works. They have no knowledge of the data that it is transmitting so all data is equal. But as you have pointed out Audio and Video bits need to be treated differently than normal data bits.

IMO they are also neglecting Picasa, especially the Picasaweb. Adobe and Flickr are doing a much better job of updating their online photo sharing sites. What about Google Finance, Google Talk, and even Google Docs. All things that seen to be lagging in development.

From what I've experienced again and again and again is that one of the reason (and there can be others) that techies don't make good managers is that they try to live in both worlds. The new techie manager still wants to get his hands dirty doing the day to day work. Part of this is that they are don't trust others to do it "right" or they are afraid of losing their technical skills. The new techie manager never really gives him/her self over to the dark side of management.

Right now at my home, I have a 486 Dx2 50 MHZ with 24 MB of RAM running Redhat with ipchains with five computers behind it for my dad, mom, and brother and I haven't seen any decrease in performance. ipchains takes a little while to learn but it can be a very powerful tool to keep everyone one out.
