  1. Routing from Brazil on How Dependent Is The Internet On The U.S.? · · Score: 2

could I still route mail to my girlfriend in Brazil, around the smoking crator?

Probably not, mostly due to topology. Brazil is closer to US than to Europe. Therefore it's easier to lay a fiber optical cable to there, and take advantage of the already existing cables between US and EU. Not only that, but Brazil communicates more to US than to EU. Therefore it seems to be a logical step.

Brazil has 2 major backbones: Global One and Embratel . Both route traffic to Europe through the US east coast. For those interested, here are some traceroutes:

Yep; in sufficiently high doses, anything can kill you. Even abnormally high water intake for a sustained period can kill you in several ways, including malnutirion:

There's even this article against water, for the people unaware that dihydrogen monoxide is water. Read it. It's fun.

Dihydrogen monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and kills uncounted thousands of people every year. Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO, but the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide do not end there. Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage. Symptoms of DHMO ingestion can include excessive sweating and urination, and possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and body electrolyte imbalance. For those who have become dependent, DHMO withdrawal means certain death.

    Dihydrogen monoxide:

is also known as hydric acid, and is the major component of acid rain.

    contributes to the "greenhouse effect."

    may cause severe burns.

contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.

accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.

may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.

has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.

    CONTAMINATION IS REACHING EPIDEMIC PROPORTIONS!

Quantities of dihydrogen monoxide have been found in almost every stream, lake, and reservoir in America today. But the pollution is global, and the contaminant has even been found in Antarctic ice. In the midwest alone DHMO has caused millions of dollars of property damage.

Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:

as an industrial solvent and coolant.

    in nuclear power plants.

    in the production of styrofoam.

    as a fire retardant.

in many forms of cruel animal research.

in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.

as an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food products.

Companies dump waste DHMO into rivers and the ocean, and nothing can be done to stop them because this practice is still legal. The impact on wildlife is extreme, and we cannot afford to ignore it any longer!

    THE HORROR MUST BE STOPPED!

The American government has refused to ban the production, distribution, or use of this damaging chemical due to its "importance to the economic health of this nation." In fact, the navy and other military organizations are conducting experiments with DHMO, and designing multi-billion dollar devices to control and utilize it during warfare situations. Hundreds of military research facilities receive tons of it through a highly sophisticated underground distribution network. Many store large quantities for later use.

    IT'S NOT TOO LATE!

Act NOW to prevent further contamination. Find out more about this dangerous chemical. What you don't know CAN hurt you and others throughout the world.

  6. A Brazilian's Perspective on Poor In Latin America Embrace Net's Promise · · Score: 1

Being Brazilian, I'd like to express my opinion.

Here in Brazil there is a very bad wealth distribution. By pure coincidence, I have recent figures, as a major Brazilian magazine published this week an article regarding the rich guys. It's consent here that one of the major problems is the wealth distribution.

Those who have an annual income of R$ 7.716 (US$ 4.000) are among the 10% richest Brazilians. Those who earn more than R$ 26.400 (US$ 13894) are the 1% richest, and their incoming is greater than the total incoming of the 50% poorest.

Of course, this includes poor rural areas. Big cities, like Sao Paulo, are quite like NYC. Money is mostly concentrated in the capitals (Sao Paulo, Rio, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, etc). In these big cities, like in Sao Paulo, that's where I live, we have some places with a standard of life similar to more developed countries. Yes, we have ADSL, cable modem, Mc Donald's, HBO, WB TV, and most stuff americans have. There are like 10 million Brazilians w/ Internet access (not sure about this number.).

This said, we can add that there are lots of illiterates and people who can't have access to the Internet.

And let's face it. Most people will simply use it for on-line chatting. Few people will do something useful with it, let alone profit from it. I guess only those with more culture will actually research or do something productive. But if they have some culture, they most probably are not in the 50% poorest group.

This way, the net can cause even more social distortion. This can be bad. On the other way, the net can really bring new opportunities to people who wouldn't have conditions for such.

Knowing how to access the net will soon be one of the pre-requisites of many jobs. Knowing how to use a computer already is. This will make the computer illiterates socially excluded.

So, in my opinion, it'll contribute for some of the poorest people to become even poorer, but will give many new opportunities. It's not necessarily bad or good. It's a change. People call it progress.

Hi. Sorry for e-mailing you, but your website www.stopnapster.com is not allowing comments. So if you are not the person responsible for deciding CD prices, please forward this to the relevant people. Thanks.

I have a suggestion. Why instead of trying to stop Napster (what is a pure waste of time, as if Napster is banned, there will appear other distribution systems, and/or tehnologies), why doesn't RIAA simply lower their prices ? The record companies are fatty and can easily reduce their profit margin. This way, they'll sell more.

No one in their right mind would prefer to get a MP3 from the Internet if they could buy a CD for, say, $4.

When CDs were introduced, some years ago, they were more expensive than a tape. The explanation was that by then CD-recording equipment was expensive and hard to find. Now it's much cheaper than producing a tape. But CD prices didn't lower. Artits profit didn't rise too. This means recording companies are evil and getting all the money.

So, just lower CD prices and there'll be no need to stop napster. People will stop using automatically.

    What do you think ?

If you need help setting the new prices, and stuff, you are free to contact me at napster@molina.com.br . TIA.

Other attack is the Syn flood, in wich one (or various) machine send a TCP packet with the SYN flag on and a fake source address. I live in Brazil, and we are not so behind the times. Games and movies usually arrive here about one or two monthes after being released in US.

What I believe is that these may be the only games some judge or other bureaucrat may have heard of.

And frankly speaking, I think it's ridiculous to ban these games!! First of all there are much more realistic and violent games (such as Half-life), where you kill persons, not only monsters, wich, I guess, makes a huge difference from the psychological point of view. In Duken Nuken you kill monsters, instead of people !

Another thing: I read here in Slashdot they said the sicko was being treated for stress. That's not true. He was being treated for schizophrenia, and his doctor told his family he should not live unattended. But they left him living alone.

And this case had so much repercussion in the press because it was the first time in Brazil a psycho goes to a public place and starts shooting people without having a reason.
