We constantly hear about how piracy is a crime, but how on earth did the entertainment industry manage to lobby this so high up that it gained such prominent elevation in the police force?
If you and I sign a contract and you violate that contract, can I send the police (or the FBI or other armed squad of gestapo) to exact retribution on you?
Depends on if you have as much money and political influence (same thing, really) as the RIAA does.
Those are all really limitations with DRM though, not eBooks. It's certainly possible to have eBooks without DRM, especially in cases where it's an independent author. It's mostly the brain-dead publishers that insist on restricting our rights via DRM.
I have a NAS (RAID 5) array that I keep the photos on. Every once in awhile I'll burn the photos directory to two DVDs. One is kept locally just in case of a failure of the NAS. The other goes to family/friends house in case of a disaster (fire, etc).
Most of the pictures we have of the kids since they were born are all digital, so I don't want to take any chances with loosing them.
Since when does ignorance of the law excuse you from it?
We're not talking about ignorance of the law, we're talking about ignorance of whether a particular work is copyrighted. Those are two completely different things.
Except that the basement floods every year, and has been doing so for much longer than there has even been a tap. So does the tap really have anything to do with it, and if you turn it off, will the basement flood anyway?
How do you know you're not asking an MPAA server ? You don't. 2 or 3 states consider that to be entrapment, but most don't, and that'll be enough.
Downloading a movie from an MPAA server wouldn't even be copyright infringement.
Businesses are going to be wary of dealing with file hosting websites after the megaupload take down.
Which is exactly why it was taken down. File hosting sites provide competition to the RIAA/MPAA distribution cartel.
Anyone with half a brain knows that these services were created for the purpose of sharing copyrighted material.
I'd have to agree with that. Anyone who "knows" this, obviously only has half a brain.
...and we can hope for the next guy in to do better.
You're joking, right?
They have been bending over backwards to their Hollywood MPAA/RIAA financial donors for many years now.
You think the Republicans don't?
I'm surprised that isn't being done already.
Dear everyone,
There is no opposing party. It's a one party system, it just has two names.
We constantly hear about how piracy is a crime, but how on earth did the entertainment industry manage to lobby this so high up that it gained such prominent elevation in the police force?
Money. Lots and lots of money.
It doesn't apply to gun manufacturers because murder victims don't own as many politicians as copyright owners do.
Copyright stopped having anything to do with promoting the progress of science and useful arts a long time ago.

If they think they're learning science from mythbusters, they've already got problems.
IF YOU READ THE ARTICLE
There are articles on slashdot?
You're not losing vertical space, you're gaining horizontal space.
Just don't tell that to your wife.
Does the commercial volume bill apply to campaign commercials? I'd bet there's an exception in there somewhere too.
it's to give the reader enough information to decide whether reading the full article is worth it
You're joking, right? This is slashdot.

How could ebooks be bringing profits down?
They're lying.
How stupid do these people think we are, anyway?
Very.
The differences between copyright infringement and theft are pretty fundamental to a lot of IP discussions.
If it will continue, and we can't stop it, it will end our civilization.
If it will continue and we can't stop it... then there's really not much point in worrying about it. There's nothing we can do.

Does climate change happen? Obviously.
Why has this climate change happened? Now that's the real question.
Some people don't understand what "information wants to be free" means.
