The bigger size was too big for my taste.
I'm glad that there are choices. Yes. The top phones will be the big ones, but smaller ones will most likely always exist side by side.
it means nothing like this (and i hate the name of it because of it). it means you have much more ways to use the compiler. it still is on your desktop, still 100% in your control. but it's not a blackbox anymore, it's now something you can plug in own stuff, extend, reuse, etc.
question is, do you need usb sticks much at the company at all?
and yes, why not? those few that need might get one that is company-locked.
it's rather important to make sure nothing gets in AND nothing gets out. usb sticks are the most easy way to steal data from a company without any trace.
same reason we don't have cd burners in our companies systems, except on demand.
yes, admins are people, too (some of them).
the difference is, it's not the people finding and plugging in the usb stick, that are to blame. it's the admins failing to prepare for this.
no, problem is admins not having turned on the correct settings to making it impossible for users to be stupid.
they will only do once something big happens.
indeed they have to look into options. green ones would be best (having hydro here, myself, too.. switzerland).
i was more referring to the fact that america has shown their powergrid to be in need of a lot of work, having several near national wide powerouts and other fun stuff.
we'll see how it plays out.
WinForms + 1. Very simple, low level enough to understand certain decitions, but definitely high level enough to be very fast at getting done what was planned. from tiny apps to quite big apps, it works great. And lots of extensions from others (want an office 2010 style ribbon? sure available for winforms from somewhere).
WPF has a much steeper learning curve for questionable benefit.
simple is always better. simply having to copy a file when ever there's an update means quite a bit more work than once click "add addon", and never have to care about anything anymore.
and yes, copying a file to some special location is not a simple one click operation, it's quite a lot of clicks actually. and having to do it more often than just once is stupid, too.
so i'm glad that opera got the extension. it's a big difference. i still stay with chrome, though.
gmail itself, 2009. countrywide mobile data connection: two days ago. the whole day.
local problems? all the time.
slow connection because overseas cables got cut? last year for weeks.
if you have your stuff in your local network, there is only so much that can go wrong. if it's hosted on some foreign servers in a foreign country that you can't control anything about, possible problems are suddenly much more.
the cloud: the biggest fault the computing industry ever created. the wrongest direction we can move to.
because in the end, if there's a problem, it's still my fault, and i have to fix it. but most of the time, i won't be able to, anymore. bosses won't like that.
congrats for failing. the ribbon is great. but mostly those "20 years in business and i can't get my head around new things anymore so i have to diss it massively" guys are why people still think it's stupid.
but yeah, as an it guy, you would have to sit down, spend a bit of time, read up on it, especially on the WHY, and then be there for your customers, when they ask. once you know WHY it is how it is, you will love it. but old grumpy it guys that forgot that it is about change, about new stuff, about revolution sometimes, they are a massive blockade today. and sadly, most of them sit in the higher positions of businesses.
Uhh ohh we can bash Microsoft, lets flood the page!
The new Phone gets good reviews everywhere, and not without reason. It's an overall good os. It would be loved by Slashdot. But it's Microsoft => Bash it to hell.
Great work, as usual.
their plan? forget about java. they try to deprecate everything non-apple right now. flash now removed from newest macs with no info in the browser on how to get it (not even that, indeed, it's flash, that you would need to see the stuff). the new appstore for macs will most likely not support any non objective-c apple-libraries only applications. java gets dropped.
they want to get rid of anything out of their control. that's their plan. and they will most likely succeed. and i hate that they will.
I went from 5:4 to now 16:9. so they got even less tall over the years, massively at that, actually.
when ever you scroll, tabs on the left would be a win. and on nearly every webpage, you DO scroll. (maybe not you, but in most usage cases, that is)
I had to scroll on a 24" screen to just get to your post. when ever i have to scroll, the screen lacks height. so, yeah, i have that wheel, and no, it does not allow screens to be as thin as possible, just "because you can scroll". most content IS vertical, so higher screens would make more sence (and that's why most reader-type devices are always vertical oriented. but our pc's and laptops are used most of the time for reading/writing, too..).
i started with a 15" laptop 5:4 format. 16:9 now is really annoyingly loss of real estate to work on it. for movies, it's nice. but for movies, i have a fullhd projector, thanks.
they should give the user the option. i would like to use sysinternal codecs for anything. i don't care if it works the same on linux and windows. i DO care if it works the same on any app on my one platform i use.
if it's a store it has a nearly infinte supply of copies (of the movie, not that particular disk) available there + on order. the only reason why someone bothers is because of the artificial cost of the movie applied to it (and the bit of physical material).
but the movie is already a copy. it's not like they can't sell the movie anymore after you stole one copy. it's not like it's not there anymore. indeed, its' a move operation, not a copy operation, BUT of an already copied item.
i'm not for stealing or copyright infringement. I'm not doing it myself (yes, i pay for my copies!!). I'm just saying the difference is negligible, as in no case, you steal the movie. you steal/copy clones of it. the store can still continue to promote and sell the movie, the industry still has the movie, and every owner on the world can still watch it. it's just one disk at a wrong place. just as your downloaded copy is just one copy at the wrong place.
there is a difference, yes, but there is no difference in harm, actually.
and this is where the analogy go "you don't steal a car" doesn't work. there, the physical instance IS the content. in case of the movie, it isn't.
if i steal a dvd in the store, and worldwide all sort of copies still exist, i haven't stolen the original. i just obtained a copy. how is that theft? i've stolen a disk, and a booklet, and some plastic. but not the movie.
ripping a dvd takes some minutes, ripping a bluray around 20min. i want your internet speed if ripping is too slow for you:)
but yeah, even while my stuff is legal (and that, even while downloading would still be legal in switzerland), i rip it to get rid of all the surrounding crap. turn on the beamer, and chose the movie, and it just plays. the way i want my content: select it and play it. i can't stand the menus, the intros, the warnings, the trailers, all the crap of dvd's and blurays.
I'm using them now since around 2 years in all my systems except for the networked storage, and could never look back.
what advancements other than much faster, quiet, less powerconsuming, reliable on shock/shake do you need? i'm happy with all that:)
and centralization of the data led to the allowance for small cheap ssds on the systems, and huge cheap storage on the home server. the result is the most cost optimal highest performing and most consistent to use setup of >1 computers (5 in my case).
who cares? as long as it gives you the biggest perceived boost in performance ever, and thus is worth more than buying a new computer that costs at least 3 - 4 times as much, the ssd still is cheap.
which is why i bought ssds for all my systems at home, except the windowshomeserver, as performance doesn't matter there.
you can show me any expensive computer out there, and they all are the same to me: slow.
believing it to be expensive is not understanding their worth.
what do you care about your security if all you do is post crap?
i care about my security for personal things. but those don't happen on facebook, where community things happen. and i don't care about privacy, there, at all. why should i?
there are always reasons, true. but when people would ONLY print stuff out when it really NEEDS to be on paper (like, if it would be a bad thing to do => only do it as a last option), the real problem would be solved. yes, we would still print stuff. no, it would not nearly be as much. it would not be a major cost, or environmental issue, or anything, anymore.
no, i want a convertible. like the 2730p i already have and can put to great use (and it's predessor, the 2710p).
these are tablets that are better than notebooks, as they ADD flexibility, usability. they don't take away.
every ordinary tablet takes away.
oh, and, i want to see the backstand working well when lying on my legs..
in short: i already have all that those new tablets deliver. except, i have it in a comfortable way. unlike all the new ones.
apple talked about the middlething between phone and laptop. netbooks wouldn't be it. but from ergonomics and usability, nor is an ipad.
The bigger size was too big for my taste. I'm glad that there are choices. Yes. The top phones will be the big ones, but smaller ones will most likely always exist side by side.

So it's not people being stupid, but admins being stupid. Functionality is there.

+1 they deserve it. just as the car industry didn't want to move along for a long time, so didn't they. they deserve having to move on again, finally.
