  1. Re:JabberIM is the way to go, but.... on Jabber As The Coming IM Standard? · · Score: 3

(For those confused, JabberIM is the Jabber client available from Jabber.com. It is one of many Jabber clients available.)

Most of your complaints can be fixed in the Preferences dialog. :) Check this out:

    >* Concurrent connection: If I open two JabberIM
    >on different machines, they will battle for the
    >control of the connection!

To differentiate between connections, the clients need to have different "resources." You probably didn't set one of your instances to have a different resource, so they are trying to fight over the same resource ("JabberIM" by default). Jabber will happily let you use as many connections as you want at once.. as long as each client has unique resources.

    >* Or the messages pop and hide my work, or I
    >never see them... I can't wait a few seconds
    >before reading the mail like I was used to on ICQ
    >and MSN.
    >* If a new user send me a message while I write
    >to the other, the new window will capture my
    >keystroke. Very annoying when you say : "I love
    >you!".

Both of these can be fixed with a quick trip to your Preferences. Simply tell it to not gain focus for new messages.

Thanks to some happy hackers.. Gabber 0.8.0 (http://gabber.sourceforge.net) now supports message queuing and Gabber has had Status Docklet support for some time now.. so Gabber does exactly what you want. Besides that, it's a darn good looking app.

Does anyone know the status on DVD Video player support in BeOS? Software based or otherwise?

Hmm.. this reminds me, I need to e-mail Donald to see if he'd like any post-Christmas presents.

  8. VeggieTale History on Review:Toy Story 2 · · Score: 2

What's even cooler about VeggieTales (besides the hilarious clean humor and the great animation) is that it came out two years BEFORE Toy Story. According to IMDB (I never trust myself on dates), Toy Story came out in 1995 and the first VeggieTale video came out Christmas 1993. The animation of VeggieTales EASILY matches Toy Story and is created by a little Christian company with no big ties. I've always admired their success (at least in Christian circles) and more people interested in computer animation should check them out - I know they've inspired me to use my computer skills in a way that can help others (yeah, yeah - I'm a Christian and yes, I want to use my skills for God..).

Anyway.. I just thought it was cool that VeggieTales came out a couple of years before Toy Story, and is of excellent quality. It is too bad that they are hardly recoginized outside of Christian circles.

  9. Obvious - I think... on Intel Invests in TurboLinux · · Score: 1

Well, it seems obvious to me. They want to promote competition in the Linux market so that it will become even better than what it currently is. This will aid in having more machines with Linux, which means more processors...

Of course, I would have to look into whether or not more Linux = more machines than are currently being sold or if more Linux = less market share for other OSes which means same amount of new processors..

Ah, wait! What if it means that OEMs can spend less on the software and MORE on the machine! That would make Intel quite happy!!

Hmmmm....... I'm still thinking about this one.

  10. What Jabber Is (and Isn't) on Mozilla Picks Up Third Party IRC and RT Messaging · · Score: 5

Hey all you /. folks! :)

I am actively helping in the Jabber project, and I am sad to see so many hastily posted comments here on /.! To make some corrections to the posts that I've seen floating around, allow me to submit the following comments:

    1) Jabber is not a rip-off of anything. Jabber is completely different than other IM systems. The first thing that sets it apart is that it is open source and GPLed. But what is more interesting than that is the fact that Jabber has the ability to speak to any type of communication protocol that ANYONE would care to develop a module for. The thing that makes this even cooler is that the modules just need to be installed on the Jabber servers. That way a Jabber client (like the one that is going to work WITH Mozilla) can instantly have access to other protocols as soon as the server has been updated - no updating of the clients is necessary.

    2) I have to PARTIALLY agree with the posts about Mozilla getting bloated. But I say partially because I don't believe that most of the posters (especially the AC's) realize that what makes Mozilla bloated is the MODULES (not sure what the "official" term is for modules in Mozilla). The Mozilla Jabber client just works WITH Mozilla and may not necessarily be included in the binaries and so forth and I can't imagine it being required in source packages. DaKrushr already wrote a good post covering this.

    3) Jabber has hardly anything to do with Mozilla. Yes, we will be developing a CLIENT to use with Mozilla, but that is just one client. We have clients for almost anything you can think of - Java, Windows, X Window using GTK+, a JavaScript one for browsers, MacOS, Linux command line and more! Please realize that the Jabber client that will be working with Mozilla is just a tiny part of what the Jabber project is all about.

Thank you for your time, and I hope that you will look more indepth into Jabber before writing it off in a heartbeat.

If you'd like to ask some questions, feel free (as temas already posted) to pop into #jabber on the Open Projects IRC Network (try carter.openprojects.net).

I am on the pro-life side, but I am really embaressed (sp?) that these "terrorist" label themselves as pro-life since it ruins the credibility of the hundreds and thousands of others who are pro-life, yet condemn these actions.
