No they(Switzerland/Luxembourg) haven't. Have a valid warrant and you get the data just like in every other western nation. Why the fick should the US get the data without probable cause?
But here is the rub. These EU dudes are probably keen to help so the US can give the data back to EU nations and thus side step the EU privacy laws.
I want to buy Transformers 2. Yea i liked it, and I am happy to pay for a DVD (dito 9, district 9 and star trek). I rented it the other day (rentals are 1EU a day here). It played out of order in all 3 computers *and* my DVD player. It was useless.
So i have 3 options:
1. Buy the disk and still not be able to watch.
2. Not buy the disk, let economic incentives do its thing, and not watch.
3. Not but the disk, let economic blar blar, And download it and watch.
I have chosen 3, and its a royal pain in the ass. Finding decent quality online is a waste of time (most is compressed to 700MB and look like some kind of lego land). So i will only bother with movies I really want to see, or have seen in the cinema. Even more to the point, i will check to see what DRM they use. If they don't use more than CSS then i will buy the DVDs still. But I won't hold my breath.
I still compile the kernel from time to time. Its not that different and the core kernel compiles quickly. But the modules take ages if everything is enabled. Generally you can disable more than 70% on any given system, then compile time is much faster. With the make -j2 thing on a dual core i wait less time with slackware 13.0 than I did with slackware 1.? on a 486. (can't remember the kernel numbers)
Thats not right. Don't know were you came up with that figure but its wrong. It more like 100 years, some say more like 200-300. However thats pretty short and the waste is very dense. A large room attached to the power station can hold all of that easy, cus once its full, the stuff you put in 100 years ago can be taken out. And yes I am in favor of that kind of long term planing.
But hard sci fi? I don't think so (He3 notwithstanding).
I know its not to everyone taste but I do get sick of dumb things. Like a moon base with mining operation--but no direct communication with earth? That's just dumb. Or take Enders Game, its not a movie but you get the same thing. They have Ansibles but then still have human pilots in their fighters and ships. Its lame. They should at least be self consistent.
So why sell a DVD with *one* subtitle language and *one* spoken language, in a country that has at least 3 common languages, and is next door to 4+ other countries with different langs? We are not allowed to get a dvd 50min drive away now? Somewhere else in the EU needs to be "incompatible" with other parts?
The excuse that its takes up too much room does not work when considering subtitles.
As for starting my own netflix start up.. will you lend me 1Million?
for digital copies they don't cost a cent to make.
That is rubbish. Try running a internet distribution company or website. Anything larger than a hobby web site costs a lot of money to run no matter how you slice it.
I am finishing an indie game and it is far cheaper for me to post DVDs of the game than to host downloading. DVD/CDs cost cents per unit, and as much as they complain about overheads, that's mainly internal departments charging to reduce taxable income...
Bittorrent can change this a bit. But it really doesn't work for "need cd key after download" or indie titles. Its just won't be popular enough.
I can't get netflix in my country. DVDs that are sold sometimes don't even include English despite the fact that most of population does speak the language, and its the original language of the movie. They often don't have the subtitles for the local launages either. I guess the Zones weren't fine grained enough.
To top that all off the DVDs often have root kits (yes it is still done and its not sony) and other non standard DVD "features" to prevent "copying". They often don't work in DVD players. Once it didn't even work in mplayer!
Now the real fun begins when I try and get my money back.
You are right. Its not a right. But then again they don't make it easy to be honest.
Oh yea fair use in the country I live in means I am allowed to "crack" a dvd or whatever to watch/listen on whatever hardware/software I want. As in that is a right i do have. Despite efforts to take that away.
Being skeptical is part of science. It shouldn't be outsider/insider thing. Many "accepted" theories have professional scientists that disagree with it working in the field. They don't get cast out... expect in this field.
Even if AGW turns out to be total rubbish. I would still be pushing for alternatives. There are a lot of good reasons to be phasing out fossil fuels without climate concerns. Security of energy supply is one of them.
Well that's going to kill much medical research for a start.
So you trust drug companies with your life do you?
And you are not even correct. Without disclosure of the full study, nothing gets FDA approval. You can get access to quite a lot of them if you look around.
In every journal I have published in, providing *all* the data is a requirement for publication. Copyrights are not an excuse. You simply can't publish the results/findings/paper if you don't include the data.
Methods on what was done with the data are worthless without the data to check. The idea that you must be "qualified" to interpret data before you are allowed to look at it, does have a precedent. Organized Religion.
Scientist are not priests.
In God we trust. As for the rest of you *show* me the data.
In the US you only get one year to patent after publication assuming it was you. In the rest of the world *any* prior publication is prior art, even if you are the publisher...
And predictions from models are not facts either.

yes it is. It was really slow. However on my dual core laptop vista was ok (AMD--slower than a duo from benchmarks). So i guess YMMV.

Vista is.
Well I get the same upload too. But yes generally thats true. I have to pay an extra 10EU per month to have the same upload as download speed.
Well its not bad here. I just downloaded the slackware 13.0 iso (3.5GB) in 8 min from Switzerland to Austria. Faster than a pigeon.

I like hard sci-fi--without the time travel.
Yea, and yet you are allowed to take them onto a airplane... But not a bottle of water.
Making better games will reduce piracy as much as making better beer will reduce underage alcohol consumption.

We are Team America, &*%$ yeah!
You try get access to raw data for a recently approved drug.
I have and I did get it. But then I am affiliated with a medical university. But this was through database and supplementary material etc.
However I must agree with your public accessibility claim, and it needs fixing. One reason why we try to publish is open access journals now.
But if you want something to worry about, you should the "statistics" that these types of studies use. If that's what you call it.
I think it resonates with Witch.

..and anybody else who wants to use similar technology would have a rock-solid legal defense.
But can you afford it? These sort of thing can get ties up in legal proceedings for years.
But the lawyers will do nicely.
I think we can expand slightly on the 1950's lifestyle and still live quite nicely.
I think i can expand slightly on that... hence the current race to spend a gob of money that they don't have...
