there are two books thatmade my non computer parents more security concious
the art of intrusion - kevin mitnick
Secrets & Lies: Digital Security In a Networked World - Bruce Schneier
despite their technical stuff i couldn't stop my mum reading them after i had shown her them
they will be more comfortable with books than manuals online
and less electronic gizmos tied in
while building computers with lego can be fun
and lego racers is a good game
nothing can beat BUILDING STUFF with bricks
no i'm saying china has a SIMILAR situation.
which country is it which has lots of its infra structure run by immigrants some of them illeagal yet refuses to give them citizenship?
no on no account am i sayin the u.s. implements the single child policy
and i totally agree with your views on tibet and i just go mad when i here about these dogs
but is the US MUCH better?
while the us is one of the most politically free countrys, that doesnt mean that the elections are nesscessarily fair OR free
with a 2 party democracy things can get pretty confused - it being an either or question instead of "who" now i know this system has some benefits, i dont deny that, but it does create politics which is very mainstream, with nobody daring big changes in policy.
oh back to a few other of your points...
censorship of the press?
which country has big investigations and scandals about various newspapers reporting intelligence programs which it is not allowed to and getting into shit with the government
oh and support for mass murderers? well there are several blood-thirsty dictators which the US, sorry bush, "supports"(look in asia and africa) but i'd prefere not to go into case studies.
the us has the one of the largest prison populations in the world
additionnaly, like china, it is one of the only developed countries in the world in which execution is leagal.
personnaly I like the US(they are keeping taiwan safe), I just wish it would keep the moral high ground it has traditionally held
at the moment they are being hipocritic going after afganistan - yep, fine, good
iraq? hmmm compare iraq to north korea
compare iraq to iran
compare iraq to china - the only reason the US doesn't bomb them tomorrow is because of lucrative trade deals.
I agree the U.S isn't Nazi germany. I never said it was. but i do think it is moving closer towards WWII italy.
I just wish, since after the UN, it is the only one who feasably can. It would stick it's butt out , doing something good, and go tell china to go f**k itself (metaphorically)
persaonnaly i wish it put itself more into NATO and the UN
If I lived in china and read the U.S. news i probably wouldn't see any difference you would just have to substitute
"bush" for "hu"
"terrorists" for "traitors of the state"
China has a political situation much the same as that in the U.S.
exactly what is it that the dutch and the americans find so hard about putting an x on a piece of paper is beyond me
next they will be telling us that only 99.9% of them are illiterate!
I'm not saying that I believe linux (or unix) is the answer.
but take this scenario what if MS suddenly FOSS'd its software. what would happen then. there would probably be a flurry of bugs but eventually you would probably get an incredibly secure OS. thats not to say there wouldn't be exploited bugs, botnets or anything
If linux was the most popular OS you are right, we would be blaming it.
On windows nobody runs as user, and the default password for the root is no password- (good security?)
HOWEVER that does not mean that Microsoft is the best answer for the people operating system.
Even though MAcs have a horrendus security record when it comes to fixing bugs - I have much more confidence in them over MS
I appreciate your view that there are somethings it is worth keeping people out of, but surely it would be better to have linux at the bottom of the stack compared to windows.
Just remeber theres always going to be stupid people and malicious people. the trick is minimizing the damage, I just think that UNIX and LINUX have a much better security in general.
i'm interested in your response
"But why must Linux or FreeBSD or whatever appeal to the average person?"
so the world isn't controlled by a bug ridden, virus touting operating system owned by a anti-competitive software giant?
if MS was secure and GPL then i would agree with you
People are like sheep if you get one to walk through a gap in the hedge, you can bet the rest will.
if somebody perfect #2 and makes it easy then MS will be in a bit of a mess because as far as they are concerned that person is not legitimate
so their system will be flawed and they will have to introduce something for people who dont hasve legit copies to get legit copies and all the related problems that will bring
what i dont get is why the great firewall of iran servers aren't DDOS'd
surely taking out the firewall and cracking the ISP's are the way forward for the people of Iran!
pity we couldn't extradite Bill
- the UK doesn't have an extradition agreement with britain!
http://slashdot.org/subscribe.pl
identifieing criminals from them tends to be a joke
they are generally used for being certain that a crime took place, who was witnesses, what clothes etc
from cctv it is very difficult to identify induvidual people unless you already have some idea who they are
thats real AV like symantec used to be:
functional with a minimal frontend www.eset.com
show them a computer getting totally pwned by some spyware in real time
that ususally makes people shit themselves
ie:
i click this box saying yes an if we look here within 4 minutes its on a bot network spamming everyone

The Republicans complained they weren't getting enough votes!
I believe you already do! Not just Canada either; Afganistan, Iraq, North Korea... anywhere!
unfortunatly doesnt work perhaps slashdotted
i didn't realise there were that many things that a ballot could do!
Hilarious

* How are the stomach pains after eating the cake from MS?
a multi national body is the solution, as much as I dont like it however I think the US would get a shock of it's life if that happened
I would much prefer if the swedish Pirate Partyhttp://www2.piratpartiet.se/international/eng lish/ controlled the internet!

-I suppose sand, oil and people count as WMDs then ? well oil and people are killing the planet therefor sand must dangerous too
exactly why is kerio "worthless"? because its free? - (as in beer)

90% of whats on the internet IS porn. unless you go looking for it in which case only 0.1% of it is
