Re:Not So Much a Rules Change
"...as a lowering in standards. Slashdot is now all about the paid astro-turfing, self-referential brand-building, and manufactured outrages designed to generate pageviews. The founders are gone, and It's Time to Start Running This Like a Business, Goddammit!
A little cruel there, and they do have to make a buck out of advertising ... link -
Re:No problem. So what's the alternative?
So far, I've got:
http://track.pubmatic.com/* http://m1.2mdn.net/* http://view.atdmt.com/* http://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/* http://content.yieldmanager.edgesuite.net/* http://cdn5.tribalfusion.com/media/* http://online-pro-antivirus-scan.com/*
The last one is the most obnoxious. It's a full animated windows file explorer showing a fake virus scan (positive of course). It's kinda funny to watch it on a Linux machine though but it's a bit difficult to get it to close and stay closed.

Re:Location of the Grail?
The Grail can be found in unexpected places. This is the ad Google served me at the top of this article:

Re:That's a problem?
The ad I saw right under the parent was...
"More flexible screwing." Thinkgeek.

Isn't it ironic.... *ducks* -
Ironic advertisement
Ah, the dangers of context-sensitive advertising.
Ad on the main page when this article was at the top of the list.
Does "50% off setup" mean you'll only be set up halfway before they run out of A/C? -
Re:Oh boo hoo
but I never, repeat NEVER, click on banner ads or anything like that.
I do when the ad is revelant, informative, quiet, unobtrusive, and sponsors my favorite webpages sometimes gets clicked. For example, without product place banner ads from Think Geek, I would not have found "Got Root" and "I read your email" T shirts. I whitelist (remove from hosts file) some ad servers because they do a nice job. Flash advertisements are on the other hand dead meat.
As an example at the top of this page is an advertisement for Dice advertising tech jobs. It's URL is http://m1.2mdn.net/viewad/982522/dice_q107_jobsuck2_728x90_NT.gif.
It sponsors Slashdot, behaves, revelant to the tech industry (Geeks) and doesn't cover anything. If slashdot tried to do Flash cover the page advertisements like the Yahoo home page is doing now, the ad server would hit the bin in a heartbeat. (yes I sometimes turn off the hosts file and enable flash to check the state of affairs.) -
Re:Deja GIF.
I couldn't help you showed up for me as a slashdot "friend of a friend."
I also noticed that graphic file lives at http://images.slashdot.org/fof.gif
The ad currently on my screen is for "Dice" and is http://m1.2mdn.net/viewad/982522/dice_q107_money_7 28x90_NT.gif
Seems like most of the other slashdot graphics are pngs, but there are still plenty of gifs around! -
Roland, a dog in a silk shirt? Roland is a Troll !
When I think of Roland in a Speedo, his rock hard bone firmly outlined in the shearness of the silky smooth material, I fall to pieces...
Wake-up, people.
I thought Rolan "Garbagepaile-kid" Piquepaile was a fat tard with a mono-browe like this. Or, someone performed a filthy sanchez tounge-teabag on his forehead. It makes sense to bundle Roland Piquepaile with all the trolls renouned of LemonParty, Goatse, GLIT, FLUG, GNAA, GLUG, GLIT, CLIT, and AllYourBase. Look at it, people! Slashdot isn't the only place wear he spam-bombs his advertisements to his endorsed webpages, to collection on banner advertising. The stupidest ploy I had ever seen was a huge fan mounted to a IDE Hard Disk-Drive, and Roland Piquepaile moved the article to sell a single machine-screw and a 90-degree brackette, even though the solution was without technical merrit as to fault caused by vibration.
Come on already! I'll abandon my de jure Slashdot account, and create a rash of three or four Slashdot expo'se' accounts just to remind everyone of the dirt on that fake-hobbyist! -
Re:"...what will?"
Yes, if Microsoft personally gave me 100 million dollars then I would switch to Vista
You cheap whore.
Err.. well, you whore nonetheless.
Wonder what the price was on the stupid whore that put out this ad for dice.com currently running on slashdot?
Ok, I'll admit reall don't care that much about this story. I just needed to point out how much I now hate dice.com because of this ad. Apparently they haven't mastered the concept of if-else logic.
yeah, yeah their just a recruiter... I know.
