Well, NASA is finally accomplishing its mission
In June of 2010 Obama's NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden went on Al Jazeera TV and stated that Obama had given him three goals as administrator of the space agency that one put men on the moon:
1. Inspire children to study math and science
2. Expand our international relationships
3. "Third, and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and, ah, engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations, ah, to help them, ah, feel good about their historic contribution to science and engineering"
More astute readers will note that Obama charged Charlie with NOTHING related to putting Americans in space, going mack to the moon, going to an asteroid, going to Mars, etc. At the time he was vetting charlie for the Job, Obama was working to end US Manned spaceflight as he had promised the teachers unions he would do while on the campaign trail in 2007. His actual official campaign plan for NASA (still available online) was right there for anybody to read, even though he counted on geeks/nerds/etc to ignore documents and just get on the waves of "hope and change" hype and campaign happy talk about STEM. Obama's 2010 NASA budget eliminated all funding for the Shuttle program, the Constellation program for got back to the moon and on to Mars, put a finite end-date for ISS, funded the destruction and/or mothballing of numerous NASA facilities and vehicles, etc and caused such a panic in a bitterly partisan congress that nearly the only bi-partisan act of that congress was the defeat of Obama's NASA budget.
In 2007 before the campaign for the White House was in full swing, Obama had already promised one of the core constituencies of his party (unionized school teachers) that he would take five years of funding from NASA and put it into their schools (not for any specific new construction plans or anything, just into the slush-fund - thereby effectively just helping states fund their pension plans). Such a multi-year de-funding of a government agency like NASA would have eliminated a wide swath of the most-talented/experienced personnel, put systems into unmaintained conditions, and introduced an issue liberals in the Democrat party had been trying to achieve since Walter Mondale nearly succeeded in the aftermath of the 1967 Apollo 1 fire: putting the idea before congress of shutting NASA down as unnecessary and shifting all its funds to schools and social programs. Oh, and remember that without NASA running ISS, there would be no need for NASA to pay SpaceX to haul cargo and crew to it, and therefore SpaceX would have failed, no matter how much pro-SpaceX happy-talk Obama sycophants spout. Unfortunately, people in the tech community think of themselves as so smart and well-educated that they can be really fundamentally stupid.

DOH! This has OPENLY been the Obama NASA agenda
Were your ears full of wax and your glasses out for repair in 2007 and 2008 when Obama openly campaigned on gutting NASA and shifting the funds to K-12 education??????????? It was in his damned policy papers!
The man's 2010 NASA budget proposal (with a very rare bi-partisan congressional majority puked-out) killed all American manned spaceflight (just keeping Americans going to ISS on Russian rockets for a few years to close-out the project).
Congress EVERY YEAR has ordered him to build the big SLS Mars-capable rocket and every year Obama's NASA administrator (Charlie Bolden) insists congress is giving him too much money for that project even as he slow-walks it and as the schedule keeps slipping says the slips are related to funding.
All the "we're going to Mars" hype on the NASA website during the Obama years is nothing but phoney PR and EVERYBODY at NASA knows it. The Congress hopes that the Obama years will not be a total loss for manned spaceflight to the moon and Mars etc because they are forcing development of the monster rocket that can enable such missions; it will be available to any future president who has a vision for NASA to actually DO something.
To know just how awful Obama is on NASA, one only need to notice that this is nearly the only thing in Congress that both Republicans and Democrats on the Hill have joined together to do over the objections of Obama. When Ted Cruz and Nancy Pelosi are on the same page and with so little friction that it does not generate any national news stories, you KNOW the situation is severe

Same manipulators who fooled the Shuttle workers?
In early 2008 Barack Obama campaigned publicly for the support of educators by pointing to his plan for education which on page 15 explicitly said:
"The early education plan will be paid for by delaying the NASA Constellation Program for five years"
Everybody with a brain knew that would end Constellation and all the people transitioning from Shuttle to Constellation would lose their jobs (given that none of the vendors would be able to keep employing those people for 5 years with no cash flowing in from the customer (NASA).
Democrats in the "swing state" of Florida were panicky over this, and aware that space advocates might know about it since the long-standing Obama plan had been reported in space advocate circles as early as fall of 2007, so they setup a big space event for Obama in Florida to fool the space workers. In August 2008, assisted by his go-to guys for fooling space advocates (Senators Glenn and Nelson) Obama went to Titusville and said this:
"Today we have an administration[Bush43] that sets ambitious goals for NASA without giving NASA the support it needs to reach them. As a result, NASA's had to cut back on research, trim their program, which means that after the space shuttle shuts down in 2010, we're going to have to rely on Russian space craft to keep us into orbit. So let me be clear: we cannot cede our leadership in space. That's why I'm going to close the gap, ensure that our space program doesn't suffer when the shuttle goes out of service. We may extend an additional shuttle launch. We're going to work with [Senator]Bill Nelson[D-FL] to add at least one flight after 2010 by continuing to support NASA funding, by speeding the development of the shuttle's successor, by making sure that all those who work in the space industry in Florida do not lose their jobs when the shuttle is retired because we cant afford to lose their expertise." - Barack Obama
President Obama won Florida in 2008 by only a 2.8% margin. Space workers are obviously not enough to make up that entire margin, but they were PART of that margin, which is what "community organizing" aided by "micro targeting" is all about - rounding up lots of special interest groups and pushing the right emotional/political "buttons" to get each group to turn-out and vote even if some groups are turning out having been told this will support interest X and others are turning out having been told it will oppose interest X. Some Obama supporters now try to pretend that Obama meant something other than Constellation as the successor to Shuttle, but at this time in history, none other was proposed by any candidate or policy so Space Workers were clearly supposed to assume Constellation, particularly given the line about preserving ALL their jobs.
By 2012 when Newt Gingrich was talking about a moon colony, even 60 minutes, hardly a right-wing news outlet, had to admit to the dishonesty of the 2008 campaign visit to Florida.
It's a sad truth that many of the space advocacy groups are far more into partisan politics and helping politicians fool their members that they are into actual space policy; Space policy pays nothing, but you can make a good living consulting for and organizing groups of supporters for, national political campaigns. AFAIK none of the people who setup that 2008 event in Florida have ever apologized to any of the thousands of Space Coast workers who were fooled into voting for Obama and then lost their jobs (and in many cases l

Re:Dupe from Nov 25, 2013
It makes people feel good. Who cares if it or other job training programs work. If we actually gave a sh*t then criminal record consideration for employment would illegal. The reality is that there are only a handful of states with such laws, many that do only apply to public employment. Given this environment, recidivism is all but guaranteed. We just want to keep these people locked up, out of site, out of mind. Sure it's expensive, but it's also a great way to manage minority populations. After all not everyone can be deported.

Re:Of course...
The constitution gives the power of the purse to the House of Representatives. It's the House's prerogative to determine what gets funded and what does not. The shutdown occurred because Senate Democrats wanted to obstruct the House's Constitutionally provided power.
Weird, I wasn't aware the US was a Constitutional Monarchy where the Senate is a rubber stamp and the Head of State a figurehead. I thought when all three branches had a saw they had roughly proportional power.
I reject the premise that it's the government's role to solve all problems.
I didn't ask you to have the government solve all the problems, I asked you to give a solution. If you wish that solution can be take the government out of healthcare entirely but actually give an alternative.
Only in their official capacity as a government representative. But notice that at the beginning of ever session of the Supreme Court, the phrase "God save the United States and this Honorable Court!" is uttered. Does THAT violate the Separation of Church and State?
I would say so, you believe the government violates the constitution in some ways, I believe they violate it in others.
That's the sticky wicket, isn't it? You would be the arbiter of "significant". I'll decline to play that game.
I'm going to guess this is code for "Huh, I looked for those hundreds of cases of fraud that I heard Republican X describe in state Y for election Z, and it turned out that of all those hundreds of alleged cases none/virtually none of them turned out to be fraud"
Let's look at a study of voter fraud
We are not aware of any documented cases in which individual noncitizens have either intentionally registered to vote or voted while knowing that they were ineligible
Well there go the illegal aliens. Not sure what other kind of "fraud" you're thinking of but the only other ID specific one I can think of would be dead voters and double voting, and in both cases the documented cases were in the range of "handful". Is that significant enough to enact a law that will suppress voter turnout?

Re:Funny how
No, they weren't. The projected unemployment rate was 8.8% without stimulus and just under 8% with stimulus, with a footnote that some private forecasters said it would get as high as 11%. There are numerous other sources for that report, that was the administrations take on it, and their model was clearly crap one way or another since the actual unemployement rate with stimulus was higher than their models allowed for without it. There is no actual evidence that the stimulus decreased unemployement (it may have provably saved a few specific jobs, but those could have come at the expense of others). Politifact continues to use numbers from the CBO, which are useless for actually proving that jobs are saved, if for no other reason than they use the same model that was proven wrong by reality already.

Re:US Employment Rights
One, you underestimate the pay of public employees.
No, I'm not. See, e.g., this study.
I would debate that we need at MINIMUM a freeze on federal government hiring and allow a certain amount of attrition.
If you wish to argue that, go ahead, but simply stating a position with no support is not an argument.
Also note that the federal work force is not the whole of the public sector, or even the majority of it. (Or even as large a share of it as would be suggested by the relative spending of the federal government vs. state and local government, since much federal spending is transfer payments to the states for operation of programs which are operated at the State level.)
Sorry, I have several friends who work on an AFB who have particular issues with people that don't let them get work done.
I've personally worked in private firms, local government, and state government offices, and I've never myself not had issues with people who didn't let me get my work done in what I saw as the most effective way, and that's been pretty much true of most people I know, whether they work in private industry or in the public sector.
"I know a few people who have complaints" doesn't really demonstrate any substantive special authority in the area.

Re:Does anyones interest intersect with the US?
I don't know if anyone paid attention to the International Monetary meeting this weekend, but over here in the EU the general consensus is that the US is less and less relevant due to its complete lack of competent leaders, massive debts, and lazy, uncaring masses.
Ah yes, we haven't had such paragons of statesmanship like Tony Blair or Silvio Berlusconi.
Honestly, the EU's opinion just isn't really relevant anymore, something which has been further underscored by its near economic collapse lately. Which is the reason that both the US government and US corporations are focusing more on Asia. A good article on the subject: Towards a Post-American Europe: a power audit of EU-US Relations
Some choice quotes:
In this report we argue that the real threat to the transatlantic relationship comes not from the remaking of America's global strategy, but from European governments' failure to come to terms with how the world is changing and how the relationship must adapt to those changes. Our audit (based on extensive interviews and on structured input from all the European Union's 27 member states) reveals that EU member states have so far failed to shake off the attitudes, behaviours, and strategies they acquired over decades of American hegemony. This sort of Europe is of rapidly decreasing interest to the US. In the post-American world, a transatlantic relationship that works for both sides depends on the emergence of a post-American Europe.
. . .
Thus far, the Obama administration has seen European governments broadly living down to their expectations. It has found them weak and divided - ready to talk a good game but reluctant to get muddy. Seen from Washington, there is something almost infantile about how European governments behave towards them - a combination of attention seeking and responsibility shirking.
. . .
These behavioural traits - a welcoming of dependence; a need for attention and reassurance; a desire to ingratiate coupled with a reluctance to take responsibility; and occasional self-assertion set against a more general disposition to play the loyal lieutenant - suggest a less-than-adult attitude on the part of Europeans to transatlantic relations. The term "infantilism" does not seem out of place - just as veneration of the transatlantic relationship less for what it can deliver than as an end in itself might unkindly be described as a sort of fetishism. -
Re:Not reform, capitulation.
That's not even close to the "main" way they maximize profits.
Citation? Seems like, according to multiple studies including this one, deregulation and concentration of monopoly powers have lead to skyrocketing profits. Profits up 428 percent from 2000 to 2007, while US wages are only up 30%. Premiums have risen 120%.
If we want affordable medical care, the examples of how to do that are right in front of us: veterinary care and LASIK show exactly what happens when providers have to compete.
Yes, a single eye procedure and vet care can completely model the economics of total human health services.
When are you signing up for Cat Cross Doggie Shield? Because I think it's about time we put you down.

Re:The entire 'stimulus' package is a joke..
"I suggest a 100% payroll tax cut for the bottom 40% of household incomes, paid for by a a carbon tax of $0.50/gallon on gasoline and a $5/short ton on coal."
Are you kidding! that will throttle business at *best* it will offset the savings in payroll with more energy costs.
The good news is that it is testable. We can look over the last few years and see that we have survived gasoline and coal price changes over this approximate amount and did fairly well during that time.
I suspect the elasticity of demand for dropping labor costs is more than the elasticity of gasoline sales. Plus a carbon tax would spur new technology, and if you believe in Global Warming, that is a good thing as well.
On the other, the Federal debt as a percent of GDP is reaching levels not seen since the paydown of WWII debt during the 1950's, and we are not paying it down. It is not out of the picture that we will see a global lack of confidence in US debt is on the horizon, which could be exceedingly costly. Blowing another $trillion through debt may not be a hot idea. We'll have to pay for it somehow down the road anyway. Based on tax incidence, I suspect my household will have to pay $50,000 net present value for the stimulus bills.
Or we could blow off the stimulus and take an extra 1% of unemployment for 2.5 years according to Obama economic advisors Christina Romer and Jared Bernstein. Frankly I'd take that over the current stimulus bills.
It is all cost versus benefit.
