Probably a good view.
"But a lot of people associate game design with graphics."
Not me. Oh wait! -
Re:Ya know, I'd care if there was a Linux client..
Someone already linked to the Linux client in another reply, but you should know that the Second Life server grid is built on Debian GNU/Linux.
In addition, the client (i.e. viewer), is open source licensed under the GPLv2. AND they have announced they will open source the server grid code as well. Seeing how the grid is built on Debian, it may even become a part of the Debian package repository so any Debian install can become a Second Life grid node with a simple apt-get install second-life-server.
Granted the code is still coming, but this is fairly exciting news for the GNU/Linux crowd nonetheless. At least I would hardly call this a Microsoft Windows-centric project. -
Re:Can't the same be said about the stockmarket?
What a bunch of bologna. I have a hunch that Valleywag just consistently writes about Second Life to increase their page views so they get more for their advertising!
Here's a more realistic rebuttal from an actual journalist, Mark Wallace:

Also, as the husband in the couple on the clip being shown on CNBC, I can say it's not a paid for informercial in any way. We were contact by Dan Leon of CNBC, they came to our house, and recorded our clip. Second Life obviously has a lot of buzz around it right now (yes, probably too much!), and CNBC is simply doing what's right for their ratings.

Re:Excellent? Maybe ...
But unlike the movie, you can't carry your guns from the fake fake world to the real fake world.
Sure you can, just do something like they do for Blender. You will just be charged for the textures you import.

Re:like currency
So, if you get permanently banned from Second Life as part of a guilt-by-association political move, can you claim your L$ balance as a capital loss?

Here, I made a copy of the summary in case the slashdot gets servered
:)
This year's AGC is now at an end, and several sites have coverage of the last day's events. The hit event for the day seemed to be Damion Schubert's Moving Beyond Men in Tights talk. MMORPG.com has a slew of interesting articles, covering Emerging PR Strategies for MMOGs, Running Your Own MMOG, and Rich Vogel on MMOG Betas. Raph has a liveblog on a session about Virtual Economies, and finally the 3pointD site has a look at a panel on Virtual Worlds. Interesting stuff. From the 'Men in Tights' writeup:
"The queston to answer, why do we keep making grindtastic classbased combat oriented men in tights gamey games? I'm not going to answer 'because it sells' because it's a circular argument and a copout. We won't get anywhere if we only do what was done before. Instead, I'll ask why do we need a grind, why do games appear to be winning, why are classes good, and so on. The reason to tackle this is because whenever people decide to make a new game, these are often the first five things people choose to innovate on. But there's a lot of bad innovation from people trying to solve these five problems."
