I'd be very happy if everyone could get their act together and reject undeliverable addresses during the SMTP transaction. Delayed bounces are responsible for most of the backscatter which pollutes my mailboxes and logs these days.

Sure it's best if the message can be refused during the SMTP transaction rather than bounced after the fact. But sometimes that's not possible - for example in the case where a message has already been accepted by a backup mail exchanger or when the message is detected as undeliverable by the MDA after the MTA has already accepted it. In any case, when faced with the choice of returning a message or simply discarding it, returning it will always generate the least unmitigatable collateral damage. The real owner of an envelope sender address faked on a junk message can minimize collateral damage by refusing fake bounces at the SMTP transaction level. In that case, it only cost them a few bytes of bandwidth. If junk messages are simply discarded, the sender of a misclassified message has no way to prevent, detect, or work around the silent loss of his message.

You can filter fake bounces with 100% reliability by ensuring that each of your legitimate outbound messages has a time-expired, hash-signed envelope sender. Any automatic responses or bounces which arrive and don't include a valid hash are obvious forgeries and can be safely discarded. You can even refuse these right at the RCPT stage by having your MTA return a 5xx series status code.

A quick glance of the Undernet ircd source (avaiable at the Undernet coder committee site) doesn't show any special flags or other state being set on the client record when the client does a /whois on an oper. Could you provide a citation if I'm mistaken?

So let's kill the little twerp involved, and not give any sympathy where it's NOT due.

Some Undernet officials have serious issues. The #zt help channel bans you if you have the audacity to help people, for example. But even if these attacks are directed at those assholes, other groups (#978) are suffering collateral damage.

Check the laws in your local jurisdiction, as you may be entitled to more than the $150 you've billed for. Here in the US, we're entitled to at least $500 for each time a telemarketer calls after being told not to call anymore. If you actually think high school students have the right to free speech in this country, you need to do some reading. They don't have any sort of right to speech, privacy, press, etc at least within school... and possibly even outside it.

In Massachusetts, where I live, students right to free speech in public schools is protected by state law. I got hassled by the administration a few times for the alternative newspaper I ran for two years, but after they talked to a competent attorney, they decided to leave me alone. The only person who persisted in harassing me and my staff nearly got fired for it, ended up retiring as advisor of the official school newspaper, and was forced to write a formal appology to one of my staffers.

I'm not saying this is a good thing - in fact I think it's a terrible thing - but that's the way it is right now. And since no one really cares about teenagers' rights except teenagers, that's probably the way it will stay.

I care about teenager's rights even though I haven't been a teenager for years. And the folks over at peacefire care too. The only real danger lies in students who actually accept the fallacy that they have no rights.

You really need V4L2 to actually do it (V4L1 doesn't support two programs accessing the tv tuner at the same time)..but it should be ready from prime time rsn.
For the mpeg encoding, the best tool I've seen so far is mp1e (mirror here ...the real site seems to be down..)
For grabbing the listings, have a look at xmltv. There should be a new release coming out soon, with support for more countries...

ccdecoder (search freshmeat) also looks promising...it has the potential for grabbing listings right off your cable tv line..

Every cuecat scan results in some garbage that looks like the following:

Hidden inside that code is the barcode type, and its numeric or alphanumeric equivilent. But there's more: There's also a serial number. And that serial number is probably easily matched up to the store where you picked up your cuecat device, or even to your name if you gave it to the clerk at the store.

The first item in the second line is the serial number. Then the barcode, and then the numeric value of the UPC type A code. This serial number stuff is real bad news. It's like a cookie that can't be turned off, and it gets sent to Digital Convergence every time you scan a barcode that brings you to a web site using their software.

Of course, they're going to be pissed about people using their barcode scanners without their spying software: They want to make money by seling your personal information. They know where you live. They know what books you read, and they know what products you buy, all by what you scan with their little cuespy.

The cease and desist letter they've sent is a vague piece of crap. Its sole intent is to intimidate. They have no legal standing. First spying, now intimidation tactics? I think perhaps it's time for a TLO to investigate Digitial Convergence.

Now, suppose people write code based on this patents and the owner decides to revoke the GPL-use license. Fine, we can't write new code based on that patent any longer. But what happens to GPL code already written? So one can't use the algorithm but can re-use the code? Doesn't make sense.

The language "fully paid up" in the patent grant at http://www.levien.com/patents.html, and the fact that document is called a grant indicate that it is a non-revokable conveyance of rights. While I find software patents in general to be execrable, a grant like this allows patent holders to do right for the public benefit while putting themself at minimal disadvantage to proprietary competitors. Until we get widespread patent reform, we can only hope for more grants like this one.

A few months back, I received persistant and undesirable telemarketing calls, and decided to do a little bit of research. As it turns out, it's a violation of federal law for telemarketers to continue to call you after you've asked them not to. For each call they make after you've asked them to stop, you're entitled to $500. Certain exceptions apply, but the most obnoxious and persistant telemarketing tactics are illegal and entitle you to monetary compensation.

Many states including Massachusetts, where I live, allow you to sue telemarketers in their small claims court. In small claims court, you can represent yourself, but have the benefit of a judge who is willing and prepared to explain the law to you if you don't have a lawyer. You plead your case in plain English - and anything that the other side has to say will be explained in plain English. If the Telemarketer you're suing is from another state and opts not to appear because of the expense entailed, you win by default. If the person you're suing fails to make good on the judgement, you have a wide variety of collection methods at your disposal including court ordered asset seizure.

However, it's far more likely that the Telemarketer will opt to settle with you rather than show up or default in court. After all, if they owe you $1500 for three undesired calls and it would cost them a few thousand to fly their corporate counsel Massachusetts, obtain a lawyer here, etc., it's very much in their best interests to settle with you for $500 or even $1000.

In my case, the telemarketing firm called me first in November 1999, and then three nights in a row in December. I sent them a demand letter asking for $500 and threatening to sue in Massachusetts small claims court if they did not pay. Just before Christmas, I received a letter of appology and acknoledgement of responsibility and a check for $500. I sent them a thank you letter in which I thanked them for their appology and the $500 payment for the earliest December offense. I hinted that I would attempt to collect the remaining $1000 of their liability if they ever called again.

On March 4th and 5th, I received two more calls from the telemarketing firm, and sent another demand letter this time asking for $1000. On the way to my car on March 24, I found a UPS next day air envelope on my porch, and inside was another appology letter and a check for $1000.

So do yourself a favor. Whenever a telemarketer calls you, find out who you're talking to. Ask them never to call you again, and record their name and the time of call in a log. When they call again, give them another reminder. On the third call, threaten to sue if they don't agree to a favorable settlement.
