art is in the eye of the observer
Right.
That's why photography can be art.
And here is a nice piece of unintentional computer-generated art: I call it bugart. -
Re:Best quote
True, but quick and simple tools are also valuable.
I'm a newbie in this area, but I miss something straighforward like Fruit Loops, on which I created a (rather bad) song using only unedited Quake 3 sounds.
In fact, I tried many Linux trackers, but Fruit Loops was the only one I was able to easely understand and use, though I have not tried really hard. -

Exactly.
I heard rumors the Palito team is going to re-activate their Free TA-inspired (not clone) project soon... -
quicksearch and elinks
I have been using these features since phoenix0.5 days.
Quicksearches I use:
fm http://freshmeat.net/search/?q=%s§ion=projects
man http://linux.ctyme.com/cgi-swish/linuxdoc.cgi?quer y=%s&sort=swishlastmodified&reverse=on
cpan http://search.cpan.org/search?query=%s&mode=module
w http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%s
e2 http://everything2.com/index.pl?node=%s
dic http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=%s
google:
g http://www.google.com/search?&q=%s
l http://www.google.com/linux?q=%s
img http://images.google.com/images?q=%s
def http://www.google.com/search?q=define%3A%s
Also, when on a text console, I made a script to perform similar function: google.sh.
Tip: symlink it to different names to make your life easier. -
Re:Linux URL handling.
Just use this handy script.

Free games
Both the Racer binary (couldn't compile: "ar: q3ddlg.o: File format not recognized") and TORCS (compiled fine) freezed my X completely, and I had to hard-reboot (ctrl-alt-backspace does not kill X on my cheap mobo, the machine enters sleep mode instead). Ah, and it's a GeForce2 (nVidia driver 1.0-5336), kernel 2.6.6.
An other (unrelated) problem I have here is that many OpenGL apps seems to run in software mode (< 5fps, depending on the game). Note that, for instance, Quake3Arena runs with decent (> 50) fps.
The only racing game for linux runned ok for me was carworld, that suffers the same from other Free games: the guts of the game are working, but the game is far from complete, not even playable. They seem to have a tendency to stagnate at this (production/polishing) stage. -
Fruity Loops
Anyone knows a Linux program that looks like Fruity Loops?
I had fun with Fruit Loops 3 once (made a song out of QuakeIIIArena sound samples), but when I tried to do the same with Linux I coundn't find a program I could understand (I'm not used to trackers). -
Palito
Some guys are trying to make an open-source game inspired on TotalA.
Check their homepage: http://palito.9hells.org
They even have a nice feature comparision table
It looked promising, but unfortunatly the project seems stalled for some months.. volunteers? -

Re:Total Annihilation
There is an open-source effort to create a game similar to TotalA. It's a bit stalled, looks like the developers took a little vacation, but it's not dead at all
.. just resting ;) -
[OFFTOPIC] Total Annihilation
If you like Total Annihilation, perhaps you would like to know Palito, a free RTS game being developed by fans of TotalA.
It's still very imature, the graphics are kinda crappy (they're focusing more on the engine for now), but looks promising.

Re:Get a copy of Partition Magic
Nice to see there is someone else that love TotalA here.

Re:Total Annihilation
I see people saying TotalA is can be modded, but I think it's way too limited. Just creating new units and maps, and changing the rules a bit is not enouth.
I (and my TotalA friends) have some great ideas for modifying the game, but it's closed, and we don't have the chance. I'm even considering creating a new RTS game from scratch.
How hard it would be to try to get access to the code of TotalA? Certainly those enthusiasts out there already have tried.. Any ideas?
