Re:Why buy in the first place?
Get AOL ActiveVirusShield. It's based on Kaspersky and free (save for some commercial messages that you may direct to your trashcan)

Kaspersky for Free
Kaspersky has always been rated highly and for those of you that don't know AOL, yes that AOL, has repackaged it for Free. I've personally been using it for a while and can whole heartedly recommend it without any hesitation.

Re:No sweat off my nose....
I used Avira Antivir (www.free-av.com or www.freeav.com) until I found Active Virus Shield from AOL.
Benefits:
1. It uses the better Kaspersky engine.
2. It also checks for spyware so you don't need yet another scanner.
3. It scans email in transit.
4. It updates every 4 hours instead of every 24 hours.
6. It doesn't have any popup ads.
7. It doesn't open a window during scheduled scans.
5. It will pause scheduled scans while the CPU is busy.

Re:Symantec on SystemDoctor: Pot, meet kettle...
For a a firewall: Kerio personal or ZoneAlarm personal, they are both free. I don't know which one does better job. I use ZoneAlarm, a friend uses Kerio. Both of us never had any problems. Do not buy the ZoneAlarm security suite, it doesn't worth the while.
For an anti-virus: AOL Active Virus Shield. The name sounds very child-ish but it's in fact Kaspersky rebranded. It is free of charge (AOL makes good adverticement like this). I remind you that Kaspersky has been on the top 3 of the list for some time now, and is usually #1 on tests. This is a quite heavy anti-virus. Other than this, there is AVG and Anti-Vir. -
Re:A wise move
Or they can just go get a free version of Kaspersky courtesy of AOL.

Re:How do you Know and REMOVE them?
Sounds like fun, I was contemplating putting my wife's computer into Windows mode for her so it could also act as a DVR for some video, but better not I think
:)
Try Kaspersky and see if it finds whatever this is ...

If it can't find anything then this is not a virus but a so far undetected custom trojan of some sort.
