Re:I have a way of dealing with this,
I use the libpurple-based Mac OS X client Adium, and there is a plug-in available called Challenge/Response. This plug-in will intercept any messages from users not already on my buddy list and ask any question I like; if the user gets it right, I am asked to block/allow the user as if the plug-in wasn't even there. I used to be flooded with spam whenever I used my old MSN/Windows Live! account, but now I never get one bit of spam.
Windows and Linux/*NIX users should check out Adium's sister project Pidgin, and you can use the Bot Sentry or pidgin-privacy-please plug-ins to the same effect.

No plugins in Adium?Plugins:
Adium - No
Oh right, they call them Xtras, so I guess they do not count...

Re:well...
> It has very little emoticons
I assume you mean "very few emoticons" since the dorks who want huge 64x64 smiley-faces all over their screen don't generally browse Slashdot.
What you need to do: Adium menu -> Preferences -> Appearance -> emoticons. Click "Customize..." I believe in addition to "default," there are iChat, Yahoo, and a basic set of MSN emoticons included. Check the boxes to enable each one you want.
If you want more, you need to go here to get as many emoticons as you need.
You even can set priorities so that, for example, iChat emoticons have the top priority, but if no emoticon exists in that set for a given typed emoticon, it checks the Yahoo! and then MSN sets until it finds a match. Just drag the installed emoticon packs after clicking that "Customize..." button.

I guess every computer is different, but I've had about 3 crashes in a year or so of use, so I can't relate, there. -
Re:well...
So go to http://adiumxtras.com/ and change it. We on the adium team don't expect you to all love the duck, but it's a theme to go with.

Re:well...
It is true that Adium starts out with very few emoticons but here you can get more.. Adium Emoticon sets
Also if by logging you mean individual IM logging- you can turn it off in the preferences under general. -
Re:well...
It has very little emoticons
Me, I like to turn off emoticons. However, some folks like 'em. You can find all kinds of emoticon sets (not to mention Dock Icons, Sound Sets, Contact List and Message View Styles, AppleScripts, Status Icons, etc.) at http://www.adiumxtras.com/
I haven't found out how to disable logging,
Preferences > General > uncheck "Log Messages"
and it's somewhat buggy.
Well, currently it is a 0.86 beta. :) -
Re:well...
Disable logging by going into preferences and unticking the log messages box under the general tab
Emoticon packs can be downloaded here: http://www.adiumxtras.com/index.php?a=search&cat_i d=2&sort=downloads -
Re:IM Client - Mac OS X
I completely agree with you...as soon as I fired it up I though that it was much cleaner than Fire, and when I saw all the options (they have a separate website at AdiumExtras) I was hooked. I love the customization...I now have a Hobbes dock icon and the sounds from a Japanese train station. Awesome!

Re:Enough browsing; buy something already!the "HTTP" component is available (like wget) to any app that calls it
The version of KHTML that Safari relies on is part of OSX now. There are a couple of "alternative browsers" that rely on this for their rendering, but more interesting are other apps:
- xJournal, the LiveJournal client I use, provides a live web preview for very little code.
- Adium, a multi-protocol IM client, uses this for its message windows.
- Most every coder's editor offers live web previews. I think SubEthaEdit was the first. It's addictive to tweak your HTML/CSS in realtime.
