The big 5 (under GNU/Linux)
Since I've started using Linux exclusively, it has changed somewhat:
1. Multiple instances of Doom with the doomsday engine
2. Crack-attack
3. Mutant Storm
4. Nethack:)
5. Grid Wars 2 -
Re:Turn a one-player game into two-player
(I've heard there's a Pokemon-themed version for N64, but haven't played it.)
Don't know about the N64, but there's a Pokemon-themed version for the Game Boy--Pokemon Puzzle Challenge or something like that was the name. There's also an open-source version for the PC(Linux, Windows, or OSX) called Crack Attack. It has both single and multi-player modes, with one caveat in each mode: Single-player garbage goes straight to your field. And you have to know the IP of one or two of the computers on your network to do two-player(it also works online, but if you're married you surely have at least two computers on the same network. :P) -
Re:Puyo Puyo?
Crack Attack. But you have to play it on your PC.

Some fun games
Me and my friends used to play this game called Wormhole by Centerfleet at lunch a lot. Unfortuentally, it no longer exists. Anyone ever play it? You could play Crack attack for a free game. Otherwise, you could probably get in a round of Worms. As someone else suggested, playing SNES on emulation might be fun. I like Family Feud. I'm not sure if you can get in a game or not, but I believe you can use savestates.

Re:If you are too cheap for an AV program....
On the game front, I must mention Crack Attack. Quite possibly the most addicting puzzle game I've ever played.

Re:A vague recollection...
Hell, just playing Crack Attack for a few hours before going to be is enough to make me see things...

Yay! The CPU debate begins! Again...
"My 4 THz Intel Pentium IIIVIXXX is father then your 16 KHz G101"
For those of you who have not read ALL of the CPU articles at ArsTechnica. Go there now and do so. Before posting any of your inane babble about clock speed and processor power.
It IS true that Motorola has fallen behind Intel - sort of.
There are other advantages to hardware other then Intel based systems.
Since this is an Apple thread I'll focus there - One of the most note worthy (My opinion) Is apple's System controller.
Go READ the articles at ArsTechnica!
Rather than re-writing I'll simply cut & paste.
Fast system controller: The system controller, first introduced in Apple?s highly-regarded Xserve line, coordinates and transfers data and instructions among the processor(s), PCI bus, memory, graphics and I/O buses of the Power Mac G4. Controller speeds in the new Power Mac G4 configurations run as high as 167MHz.The PCI bus is what really impressed me.
Direct PCI bus: In another example of superior architecture, the Power Mac G4 optimizes PCI performance by connecting the PCI bus directly to the system controller. In a typical PC architecture, PCI devices connect to the I/O controller through a bridge, a bottleneck in the data path where all connected PCI devices are slowed down to avoid overloading the system controller. Going through this bridge constrains PCI throughput to 133Mbps (the bus speed on Pentium 4 systems), even with otherwise fast PCI devices. This slowdown of data to and from PCI devices results in greater overall system latency. The Power Mac G4, on the other hand, features a direct 266-MBps bus to the PCI slots to guarantee high throughput and low congestion ? in effect, lowering latency. The Power Mac G4 also supports write combining, which allows write instructions to be grouped into one large instruction, further increasing data throughput.
Then Apple oficially slams PC architecture.
On the Power Mac G4, FireWire, Gigabit Ethernet and even the ATA/100 bus are built into the system and integrated directly into the system controller. (The ATA/66 bus has its own controller.) This dedicated connection reduces PCI congestion and guarantees low latency, resulting in optimal FireWire, Ethernet and hard drive performance. And as a side benefit, it also keeps the computer?s PCI slots free for your specialized audio and video cards instead of using them to provide basic technologies.
I got this info here.

Apple is not the end all - be all of systems. Two of the greated systems are made by DEC & H/P. The UltraSparc kicks the crap out of anything Motorola & Intel have to offer.
And let's not forget the Alpha. The Pentium - Pentium III architectures were based on technology stolen from DEC. Technology that Intel is still paying for today.
It basically falls down to system preference. Mac users DO NOT CARE if you can build a PC for $400. Mac users DO NOT CARE if only a few of the best selling game titles are ported to the system.
Having more game titles available is a Good Thing - naturally -but I find myself being... PRODUCTIVE instead of having my time eaten away by games - Linux users also what I'm talking about - unless they've downloaded BZFlag or Crack Attack.

Re:Let me cast the first stone.
Gaming addiction is not a behavior of gamers... it's a behavior of addicts.
I have to disagree. I'm a engineer at Cal Poly, and I've seen many of my otherwise perfectly healthy and competent fellow classmates spend hours and hours gunning each other down in Counterstrike, and putting off important essays until 5am, when they're due in a few hours. I've even created a rivalry between two of my friends who didn't even know each other, competing for the highest score in Crack Attack. One's girlfriend threatened me with death because all he did anymore was try to beat the other friend's score.
What I'm trying to say is that there aren't predefined sets of personality, where you can say "This person will become and addict, and oh, this guy over here, he won't be." Anyone can find themselves taking any activity too seriously, -especially- when there is competition involved. (and especially males, for we can focus single-mindedly on one thing and have the competitive streak to boot ; )
Anyway, I quit games. I was sick of playing for hours and hours to get nowhere and have done nothing; all my peers lament their lack of lives and wasted hours, but every night they're back at it again.

Re:Don't forget the games!
Next to the ones listed above, these are some of my favs:
- GLTron, 3D lightcycle game
- Parsec, 3D space shooter (no single player mode, though)
- Crack Attack!, based on SNES Tetris Attack.
Cheers,
Costyn.

Some other important AppsThese are mostly server orientated - but they're free, and compile on windows: Apache, PHP and MySQL.
Also a very addictive game called crack attack, which runs on windows and linux, and is under the GPL:
Crack AttackOther things that you should consider include Python and PyGame (don't forget SDL as well!).
[x]Chat runs under windows (native), and is the only irc I'd consider using (beats the hell out of mirc).
Putty is an open source ssh/telnet client. Its possibly the best telnet client for use under windows. Then again, could anything be worse than C:\Windows\Telnet.exe ?
I've probably missed quite a few good ones, but these are things I seriously like.

Re:The Apex of the Genre
"click" implies that I did not fuck up making an anchor tag. Here's Crack Attack.
