Non-profit organizations
Look for non-profit organizations such as the local Food Bank, the American Heart Association, the Red Cross, or Junior Achievement.
Even if these organizations don't need technical help, volunteer your time and encourage friends/coworkers to join you. It won't (or at least, it shouldn't) kill you to walk away from the computer world for a few hours a week. -
You're not an optimist, you're delusional
Call me an optimist, but I think the Save Farscape [savefarscape.com] campaign has the ability to bring this thing back.
No, they don't. It doesn't have a prayer. Practical matters prevent it- Producers, directors, crew, actors/actresses all go their separate ways.
Second, let's not forget that the ONLY reason TV shows exist is to SELL ADVERTISING. When the advertisers go "hey, this show is only watched by a bunch of nerds, everyone else thinks it's stupid, sorry, we'll advertise with someone else", guess what? It gets dropped. Why do you think the VAST majority of TV shows are NEVER -continued- on another network?
Are you seriously blinded to the point that you think a science fiction show that FAILED on a -network dEDICATED to science fiction- will have even a prayer?
The concept of donating money to 'save' a TV show, which is at best entertainment, at worst a device invented PURELY to make money. It disgusts me that people are so loaded with money that they prioritize a MONEY MAKING DEVICE over helping the homeless, feeding starving children, curing various diseases, etc. Try getting off your fucking couch and building a house with all your new-found spare time, instead of popping pimples waiting for the browser to load the "people who can't let go" webboard.
I guarantee you'll feel better, meet some cool people, and be healthier to boot.
I did hang up one of the posters [watchfarscape.com] on my door.
Sad that people will protest a TV show but not a war and the continuous stripping of their personal freedom and rights.
Baa baa, little sheep. -
Health benefits of alcohol
The really sobering news in that article was that they knew in 1972 that alcohol could help people at risk for cardiovascular disease but the government forbid publication of the study.
In other words, they suppressed information that would have reduced the number of people who died from this disease.
Nearly one million people died in 1999 from cardiovascular disease.
That's one in every 2.5 deaths.
Fucking unbelievable.
This goes well with the news that the government suppressed research into the marijuana's effectiveness in treating cancer. Since the 1973 study talked about in the linked story, there have been three separate studies demonstrating that THC holds promise in reducing or eradicating tumors, but still the government virtually prohibits the research.
The total number of dead worldwide may be in the hundreds of millions.
I'm glad to see the slashdot editors consider this news, even if they didn't bother giving it its own berth. Good thing nobody introduced a new MP3 player today. -
Re:Why?

Re:My grandma is 83 and eats food fried in lard!
It's not "unhealthy". It's traditional Mexican food. Fried in manteca (fat), heavily salted, and the yummy treats heavily sugared.
That kind of diet works well for people in less developed countries, whose diet is mainly rice and beans with a little meat on the side on rare occasions. It is different for Chicanos in the U.S.; we have a higher risk of suffering from heart attacks, strokes and diabetes. The American Heart Association has recommended that Chicanos should cut lard from their diet to lessen these risks.
I don't know if you have tried tamales or flour tortillas cooked with vegatable shortening, but they come out dry and flavorless. I personally think giving up a couple years of old age in exchange for real deal is a no-brainer!

You think being a MIB is all voodoo mind control? You should see the paperwork! -
