AMPFEA.ORG
We use Torrents on AMPFEA.ORG, which is a community made for people who want a way to put their original-content (only) material online free of charge.
If its free to the world, its free to use AMPFEA.ORG .. we discourage mis-use and abuse by active community audits, and we've got a veritable stash of interesting material - music, images, video - online for people to peruse.
(Archives Made Persistent For Everyones Access..) -
Re:Wow!
yeah
.. i mean .. its like soooo exciting watching someone's video of laundry being trampled on by repugnant little mutant dogs. over and over.
sheesh .. these sites have everything except .. a reason for such fame. what they need to do is find rogue sites of independent artists and somehow lure them into producing something .. actually interesting .. something actually worth watching ..
but, then again. we have been seeing a lot of 'media studies' majors over the last 5 to 10 years .. these people, even the dropouts, have to be producing something interesting.
or, are these so-called 'services' just a diversionary tactic away from the underground, try to nip it in the bud before a 21st century rock star emerges from the inky depths of the 'net .. -
well, there are the community-run sites ..
.. maybe not all the google you want it to be, but we've been running our own, public archives on ampfea.org for a few years now. it is community-suported, 100%, and open as you want it to be.
undoubtedly there are tons more sites like ours. we recently converted our resources [community-owned hardware on donated bandwidth] to serve torrents, and have more tricky stuff up our sleeves for artists wanting a place to put their works (ipod integration, etc.)
we don't do much quality control, we do ask artists to stand by their work, and of course we have a discretionary control over content in order to protect ourselves from mis-use, but the purpose of the site is long-term archives under our own weight .. -
Look no further ..
... than right here
...
Plenty of re-mix material, songs incomplete, and artists looking for other people to contribute to the mix .. -
An even better, proven, one ..
... Make Your Own.
Seriously. The days of the hegemonous rockstar are over.
Good riddance.

If they're going to use "Ads" to generate "revenue" from what should, in all conscience, be considered a public resource (since its public news, from public sources), then they ought to -really- sell Ads.
What I mean is, open the Ad-space to *all*, not just multi-million-dollar accounts.
If the only $-proposition to be made from Google harvesting and data-crunching publicly sourced material is founded in their unique ability to go from "idea -> Working System -> Cultural Meme -> Brand Reality", then they ought to be being really agressive about it, and working out how to use the culture of their audience, to exploit the Ad-space.
Give me the ability to easily push a message to a few million users on a Friday afternoon, give me good stats about it and reasons to want to use Google to push that message a couple times a day. I'd use that, hell yeah. (I'm an active online artist .. a guaranteed audience of 10,000 people around the world on a Friday afternoon is a serious reason to write a new song..)
All Google need do is implement a "no single Ad twice in the same 24 hours" (or less) and open up a no-nonsense portion of their massaged content to a public RSS-style feed, and they've got a money-maker ... -
I was so enthralled by this article ...
... I slung it at my homies at ampfea.org before I even digest it, fully.
If that isn't a lesson in the positive side of what we've been able t achieve, un-educated like, in the meantime, I don't know what it is ...

For musicians ...
... check out one of the numerous 'musician' forums that are out there... for example AMPFEA.ORG ... download some stuff, find the style you like, and contact the artists you prefer.
There are thousands, and thousands of artists/musicians out on the 'net who would love to work on an Open Source-style project that can be used to promote their works. You don't need to hire them, necessarily, though you can of course. But most would love to do it just for the 'excercising of chops' such a project would provide ... -

Re:Can't fly, all artst material is at garageband
Better yet
... pitch in on community-owned server setups, such as ampfea.org which is kinda 'bbs-like in terms of support/financial structure.
We all 'just pitch in' on the monthly bills, and since we know each other pretty well, whenever someone gets a hit and their bandwidth usage goes up, we all know about it! :)
There's really no 'technological' reason these days for small bands of like-minded souls not to continue aimlessly roaming the plains, together ... if you know at least 4 or 5 other hobbyist muso's who can pitch in, then just run your own server ... -
we'll use this on ampfea.org
right now we've got a 90's-style ol' skool web interface for distributing our media, teamed up with ol' skool ftp/http mirrors distributing things around the globe.
but, we'll definitely use an rss-fronted bittorrent network, if and when it can actually be smoothly integrated with our existing setup.
ampfea stands for 'a meeting place for electronic artists' and its a community-supported media hosting/community service for a bunch of muso's ... we are prime users for free, open, public, easy-to-use media sharing technologies, and if the big-guns aren't using it, we share are happy to!
check out some of our files sometime. its all home-made music... -

The time for Artists to gather together is NOW!
Content-delivery ain't what it used to be. Joe Bob Basement Studio can put his mp3's in the same pipeline that Mega-Record Pimp Corp can.
The difference is, whether people will pay attention to you or not - not whether they -can- through whatever means are available, but whether they will.
At ampfea.org we've been gathering together, as a crew of Artists, to present a united front and stable base of operations for use by our individual members to use for promoting their artistic efforts.
This is the future. There's no -need- any more for media giants banded together to share/consume resources for promotion, there is now the need for Content Producers to cut through the dreck and get good material online, and deliverable. It costs nothing to promote an .mp3 track these days, far and wide, to all and sundry, and it can be done very, very, effectively.
I see the day when those 80's Golden Dreams of media control in the hands of the people is actually feasible. Lets hope we avoid some of those other predictions ... -
Re:So... you fill that time up with what then?
What kind of activity do you do for entertainment value brings value or creates something of value?
I write tunes and participate in community whose purpose is the continued writing of tunes by its members...
I write code.
And, I learn a new language ...

If you're sick of the RIAA!!!
Then stop using them. They'll go away.
Looking for new and interesting music?
The AMPFEA.ORG Files Repository contains a signficant daily portion of new music which has been released on the 'net by independent artists.
The new-music mailing list is a handy, moderated list for new music announcements from fresh artists around the glob.
Go here if you've got music of your own online that you want to announce to the new-music list ...
You don't *NEED* record companies any more, in order to find good music. You only need them to make you feel good about belonging to a society... -

Re:Burst...
MP3.com worked fantastically for a while, but ultimately a stupid interface, too much commercialism, having to sign up every time you downloaded something (why not just allow you to create a perpetual username?), and lack of any peer review system meant that it's signal-to noise-ratio was just too high for most people to bother with. (Plus the signup thing - even with fake details - was just too much of a drag.)
What's needed is not outright censorship of music that doesn't fit your taste (like the record companies do), but just a slashdot-style moderation and meta-moderation system for music. That way, every artist can still be heard, and people who want to just download the "best" stuff can find it easily enough.
A system we're planning over at Ampfea will do something along these lines. We're currently a rather music-technology-geek friendly community, but we're working on making our site a lot more accesible to average Joe as well.
Not that it will make much money (if any) but it'll be a damn good system!

Re:Buying Music is Good Karma
What modern systems have taken the place of patronage?
At ampfea.org we've banded together ... by 'we', I mean all of the musicians/artists that make up the community, and we support the costs of running things ourselves.
There are quite a few patrons in our mix, let me tell you.
Philanthropists, too.
And a lot of good free music, incidentally ... -
Re:Fuck?
Damn, I was about to say the same thing!
Over at Ampfea, we've been doing the opposite of MP3.com for quite a while. OK, so we're not as big and we're mostly for electronic music, but there's room to grow with our users to provide the music that they want, all virtually free (we have free mirrors, or you can buy bandwidth to download from the main site), all legal.
Ampfea is great because it's a community (with a real sense of community spirit), not a company. It really is just music for the sake of music, and it's damn good music too.
To start downloading music, this page is a good start.
We also have a mailing list that sends out direct MP3 links to the newest music from the community - like getting a free hit of totally fresh music a few times a week. To sign up for that, go here.
MP3.com has sucked for years - it's been the Microsoft of the online music world - all for it's own financial gain.
Ampfea is the Linux of the online music world - anything from the community is for the community, and that's NEVER going to change.

I frequently do this.
But then I have a consistent source of new material from fresh new artists to keep myself entertained with on a weekly basis.
Haven't bought a record in years. I actually went to the shop yesterday to pick up Obie Trice' new album, but guess what: THEY DIDN'T HAVE IT!
Bling bling, off I go for some Poisoned Obie... -

This is why: ALL GOOD P2P APPS ARE **OPEN SOURCE**
If you can't look at the source for a p2p system, then its not truly safe. It is as simple as that.
P2P opens up a whole different degree of responsibility for local system resource usage, and in fact the primary function of a p2p app is to manage local system resources on behalf of a 'greater good' of bigger resources provided to the community.
I wouldn't really put much faith in any p2p solution provider who didn't have full disclosure of source code as a priority in their front line for dealing with their users ...
I mean this as a potential professional user of p2p, as well as a personal user too. -
Re:PC-based recording for dummies
Excellent details!
I just wanted to followup your suggestions for people who are interested in getting started in music production - on ampfea.org (ampfea means 'a meeting place for electronic artists'), we have a mailing list called 'the music-bar', and if you ever need to find other musicians with whom to chat or 'borrow advice' from, this is a pretty good list to be on.
Details here.
Its not a web-forum like studio-central or whatever, but as a community it is very supportive of newbies and professionals who need help, alike. Anyone with questions regarding their attempts to get into music production is very welcome in this 1000+ community of musicians from around the planet ...
I like it that you've managed to get yourself a fully working and stable Ardour/Jack installation for your setup, incidentally... that direction holds a lot (I mean a LOT) of promise for Linux in the audio world ... -

Re:Yes, you probably can!
Well, the point is that with more and more people having access to more and more of the 'traditionally pro' style equipment, we will have greater and greater chance to hear really unique and interesting stuff coming from creative minds around the planet.
Sure, musicians can sometimes get so mixed up in the technology that they forget to write tunes... but then, having cheap access to new 'pro-style' quality technology leads to improved skills, and subsequently, interesting results from creative musicians who are able to see past all that and do really nice things with those tools... -

Re:Go Away Troll.
You're clearly baiting me, but yes, I actually am a professional music system developer.
In addition to this, I am responsible for founding a large community of musicians from around the world, and frequently deal with pro's and amateurs alike.
So, Mr. Karma Sucks, bully for you... -
I don't know...
... but I sure hope it doesn't go away as we would like to use it to push our wares, cheaply and easily.
I don't care who thinks we - Artists - shouldn't be able to create our own networks for exchange of music, but if the RIAA starts making things bad in the US for independent artists to make their works available freely and easily - on equal terms with the industry - then I will swim out and duct-tape^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hinstall boxen on the pillars of Sea Haven myself. -

Sorta like AMPFEA, for example.
I can imagine a few among that crowd might find this useful... -
As a professional musical instrument maker ...
... and as a hobbyist musician I love articles like this.
When the general public get sick of all the pop and 'reality' stars made for them, they turn to the underground, and this is where you'll find people who truly allow new styles to flourish.
All this Hollywood stuff is for chumps. If you want real music, and real musicians, just look for the underground.
It's out there. -

Here's a tip to kill the RIAA:
- Write your own damn music.
- Only buy music from people you personally know.
This is not as difficult as it seems...
You don't need 'recording artists' any more ...
