Solar Flares?
I'm guessing that they've read the BOFH, but realized that there's much more reporting on solar-induced radiation
... so just decided to go with 'galactic' instead. .... completely forgetting that if this were the case, it would happen more frequently at high latitudes, due to the magnetosphere. And we'd also see a higher incidence rate after solar x-ray flares and solar particle events.(and the disclaimer: I work for the Solar Data Analysis Center, but I'm not a scientist, and don't speak for my place of work, etc, blah blah blah)

Re:I want trn style "Kill Files".
Reminds me of my favorite BOFH story involving killfiles:
https://www.andrews.edu/~freem...
"Excellent. What is a killfile?"
"Uh. It's a list of usernames/topics/news items etc. that you wish the news-reader to automatically skip so you don't have to wade through rubbish."
"Uh. No. Remember I said pertaining to Operations. A killfile is in fact a file with a list of names of people you are going to have killed."
"Oh. Of course." -
Re:War of government against people?
So it took you three tries to pass statistics? Well that clears things up.
Read this stat 101 text: It explicitly says that any regression value, whether positive, negative, or even zero, is meaningless if there are confounding factors that are unaccounted for. That is exactly what GP was saying.

Don't believe God?
check your calendar, 2013 is based approximately on when historians think Jesus was born.
go to a biblical archaeology trip in bible land.
check out how history followed and is following daniel and revelation.i used to be an atheist for some time, because i asked God for something but he didn't grant it, therefore i emotioned that he didn't exist.
it is like emailing bill gates and he doesn't reply, therefore bill gates doesn't exist.want to reconsider? check out some amazing facts.

The Intelligent Design connection
I guess most people didn't catch the significance of Andrews University...
Two of the study's coauthours (Wendi Kannenberg, Gary L. Hopkins) are from Andrews University Institute for Prevention of Addictions. Andrews is a Christian university run by a denomination which doesn't accept evolution. I've spoken to a prof from their biology department, apparently it's a bastion of the Intelligent Design movement. (Here's a book published by Andrews University Press).
I'm not saying that proponents of intelligent design and those around them are incapable of doing serious scientific research. I'm thinking this might partially explain what feels like an anti-gamer bias.
The joys of crowdsourcing...

I make instruments for a living.
But it depends on what you call an 'instrument'.
In my book, an instrument is any object designed specifically and only for the purpose of making music. (This is why softsynths aren't "instruments" in my opinion; though they are 'virtualized software instruments' they're not quite complete ... since you have to use a general-purpose computer to run them ... in the same way that pro-tools using edit gimps aren't "musicians" {they're producers}, neither are soft-synths 'instrument's ... heh heh ... flame on ...)
So, anyway, I make synthesizers and work for a fairly well-known synthesizer company.
There are tons of DIY Synthesizer builders out there in 'net land, in fact its quite an active and avid community... synth construction is a very fun geek activity, and you'll be surprised by some of the amazing systems that have been built, quite openly, by instrument-making enthusiasts.
Check out synth.net, of course ... this site is all about DIY instrument makers, and if you really want to go on a wacky and wild journey, browse the Synth DIY Who's Who and see where it takes you ...
And if you want an example of the DIY/GNU spirit combined, you can't do much better than Gene Stopp's ASM1 Design (Open Modular Synthesizer Hardware Project) ... I've built a couple ASM1's now. Its like Open Source, only for Hardware... instead of compile, you solder. -
Re:India patents zero and binaryIndia is by no means the only contender for the "who invented zero" title.
Maybe Iraq could get a leg up on reconstruction by contesting that claim in an X-TREME CRADLE-OF-CIVILAZATION *SMACKDOWN*.

Re:Programmers == Carpenters??Dude you did even read the page? He says:
"The oldest history zero in the history was in Babylon. Babylonian mathematicians and astronomers developed a genuine zero to signify the absence sexagesimal units of certain order"
So if the Arabs got the zero from anywhere it would have been...err from themselves

Platonic Dice??!!??
John Greschak probably should do a bit more research on the subject of "Platonic Dice". What he is referring to are the Platonic solids.
In order for a solid to be a Platonic solid, it needs to be convex and have all its vertices (corners) to have the same number and size of regular polyhedrons touching them. For example, a cube is a Platonic solid because all of the vertices have 4 of the same size squares touching. There are only 5 Platonic solids possible: the Tetrahedron (4 sides), the Hexahedron (cube, 6 sides), Octahedron (8 sides), Dodecahedron (12 sides), Icosahedron (20 sides).
There is also a class of related solids called Archimedian solids where the solids are convex, all vertices are identical, all faces are regular polygons, but not all of the faces are identical to each other. -
Good passwords aredefinately the key
At our institution we have implemented password patterns that must be used. These rules have greatly inhanced security and we have yet to have one of the passwords cracked (we are running a cracker ourselves).
The ruleset it easy:
#1 Passwords must not contain a dictionary word
#2 All passwords must contain a at least 1 number and 1 special character (ie #$%^&....)
#3 The at least 1 number and 1 special character can not be the first or last character of the password.
As for password rotation. I actually believe that harms password integrity. If you are using passwords good enough to stand to crack attacks then changing them only encourages people to write them down someplace and thereby loosing all the benefits of a better password. -
Not dinosaurs, says Professor Emeritus @ Cornell
oil is from compressed carbon compounds (dinosaurs, etc.)
This wouldn't be the Internet if there wasn't at least some dissenting opinion around. (-: This from a Professor Emeritus at Cornell.
Here's a soundless-bite from the abstract in case you think I'm kidding:
Thomas Gold
U.S.G.S. Professional Paper 1570, The Future of Energy Gases, 1993
Modern information re-directs attention to the theories of a non-biological, primeval origin. Among this information is the prominence of hydrocarbons-gases, liquids and solids-on many other bodies of the solar system, as well as in interstellar space. Advances in high-pressure thermodynamics have shown that the pressure-temperature regime of the Earth would allow hydrocarbon molecules to be formed and to survive between the surface and a depth of 100 to 300 km. Outgassing from such depth would bring up other gases present in trace amounts in the rocks, thus accounting for the well known association of hydrocarbons with helium. Recent discoveries of the widespread presence of bacterial life at depth point to this as the origin of the biological content of petroleum.
You'll be pleased to discover that an awful lot of other stuff you `know' is completely wrong. (-:
For another example: most modern aircraft, notably jetliners and military aircraft don't rely on the Bernoulli effect (you know, the faster-air-lower-pressure-over-wing thing you're taught in science classes at school) to fly. Think about it: if Bernoulli kept aeroplanes in the air, how could you fly one upside down? (-:
Are you interested in a few other foundation-shakers for you knowledge base? There are plenty of them around! (-: -
Soldering
Just wanted to point out that the article mentions using a soldering *GUN*, which should be fine in this case but generally not reccomended for electronics.
These tips won't really be useful to people with electronics experience, but I'd rather not see anybody ruin a mouse or other electronics by making an easily avoided beginner's mistake.
Mouse cicuitry isn't exactly the most complex stuff in the world, but when working on electronics projects it's really better to use some type of soldering pencil. Soldering guns put out waaaaay more heat then needed, and produce some pretty nasty electromagnetic fields. These two combinded can fry an IC in no time flat (shouldn't be directly soldering an IC anyways, but that's a different topic).
Oh yeah, and DON'T use acid core solder.
