Re:Freedom of the press?
How the hell did this piece of establishment diatribe get modded +5 informative?
ALF - Animal Liberation Front - a umbrella name for an unconnected group of compassionate people prepared to break the law and risk their liberty to defend animals from abuse. They have a strict policy of non-violence to any animals, including humans.
SHAC - Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty - a lawful group that campaigns against hideous abuse of animals at Huntingdon Life Sciences, who have been exposed numerous time for punching beagles, force-feeding them weedkiller, and torturing monkeys.
SPEAK - A group campaigning against a new animal torture facility in the heart of Oxford, UK.
PETA - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals - a large mainstream animal rights group, that nevertheless recognises that some people will break the law to help animals in suffering.
BUAV - British Union of Anti-Vivisectionists - a formerly radical but now wishy washy group whose main activities are lobbying politicians, who get much larger bribes from drug companies anyway.

Re:Well.
I agreed with you that additional evidence can change the outcome of an experiment. But so far you have presented "they attack scientists" as the entirety of your evidence in favour of the hypothesis "they are anti-science". In combination with the evidence "they attack non-scientists", the available evidence does not support your hypothesis.
Then you provide me with a few links to sites which, in fact, provide more evidence that these people are not anti-science:
http://www.shac.net/science/facts.html -- why would SHAC appeal to "scientific facts" [sic] if they rejected science?
http://www.speakcampaigns.org/faq.php/ -- again, there is a (not particularly rigorous, but nonetheless laudable) attempt to meet scientists with evidence-based reasoning.
http://www.animalliberationfront.com/Philosophy/Morality/ScienceandMorality.htm -- which seeks to separate the moral argument from the scientific argument, and rejects animal testing on the former rather than the latter.
Feel free to point me to specific pages which you feel demonstrate evidence of an anti-scientific standpoint.

Re:Well.
If your only response is a combination of comparing me to the ALF and liberal arts graduates we aren't going to make progress here. You basically agreed with me in the last line of your post, I just assume you haven't done the necessary reading to check up on your opinions, so I will provide you with references. If you want an example of attitudes comparable to antisemitism directed towards scientists conducting research look at

Re:The Revolution will be Televised
Actually, I believe the ALF in question here is the Animal Liberation Front.

horses legsDisney (and all the other movie companies really) used to be quite un-PC about their animal stunts.
They used to lay trip wires across the ground to cause a horse to fall over when filming their Westerns. This allegedly broke a few of the horses' legs.
According to Animal Liberation Front (and similar organisations) Clint Eastwood tried to stop the movie makers doing this in his films.

Re:I can't believe #1 isI agree that conservatives generally would stand up in favor of personal freedom and civil liberties (isn't that redundant?), and I think most support reasonable environmental protections (I'm assuming most liberals don't go as far left as ALF and Earth First!).
I think the perception that the list of stories is "left leaning" has as much to do with the lean of the stories themselves as the subject matter.
Ignoring whether the stories have any bias or agenda, however, let's look at the list:
- 3 of the stories mention republicans by name, describing unflattering activity.
- 7 of the stories criticize activities by the US government, linking republicans to the activity.
- The #1 story is about "Wealth Inequality".
There are many phrases in the list identified with a leftist agenda: "Bush Administration Censors...", "Threatens Intellectual Freedom...", "...Represses Labor Unions...".
The stories are pretty much ALL inflammatory, and obviously slanted. Like in story #7: "Bush has the capability to turn the courts over to ultra right-wing ideologues." Hmmm... possibly left leaning.
You may or may not agree that some of these issues deserve more discussion in the mainstream media. I had heard most of these stories before I saw the list, so I don't think any in way they were censored, so much as they were uninteresting and/or overblown.
Still, let's call a spade a spade. Left-leaning? Well, yea.

PETA troubles

Re:Excuse me?I don't think these things can be attributed to PETA. The author of the website claims that the ALF is "part of the PETA organization", but provides no evidence for this.
Searching through both websites (http://www.animalliberationfront.com and http://www.peta-online.org), I can find no indication that the ALF is part of PETA.
I also did a search for ALF PETA relationship on Google, and while I couldn't find any evidence that ALF is part of PETA, I did find this quote from this article.
"She [Newkirk] said her group does not fund the ALF but once did. 'In the early '90s, it was a very different group, well-organized, and generated a lot of sympathy. But they dissolved.
Newkirk is the head of PETA. ... Now they're just angry, and act without planning,' she said." (New York Daily News, Dec. 12, 1997).So it appears that Dr. Lee is attributing the work of ALF to PETA, but I'm not so sure that should be the case.
PETA does not, however, condem the actions of ALF, so you can take from that what you will.

Re:FriendlyWiping out all animals (including bugs, birds, etc) and most of the plants (the rest of whom probably mutate) isn't exactly environmentally friendly.
Hell if it isn't. It is a universally accepted fact that non-humans cause far more environmental destruction that humans. To back this up, here are some facts from a whacked out, leftist environmental group that admits that animals are the cause of environmantal harm:
About 22% of the world's catch of tuna goes into cat food in the United States.
Cats are destroying the world's tuna population.Nationwide, grandparents annually spend an average of $195.24 on their companion animals and $178.68 on their grandchildren
'Companion animals' are taking food out of the mouths of children. In 1998, there were 56.8 million dogs and 71.3 million cats in U.S. households.
In the US alone the dog and cat population is skyrocketing.Sea otter fur is the thickest fur of any animal. It has up to 1 million hairs per square inch -- a human has only about 20,000 hairs on his or her entire head.
Sea otters are hogging all of the world's fur supply, leaving other animals with nearly none.Cattle produce nearly 1 billion tons of organic waste each year.
Our groundwater supply is being contaminated by thoughtless cows.According to the U.S. General Accounting Office, more plant species in the U.S. have been eliminated or threatened by livestock grazing than by any other cause
Another crushing blow by the evil cow population. They must all be eradicated if we are to save Mother Earth.Nearly half of the total amount of water used annually in the U.S. goes to grow feed and provide drinking water for cattle and other livestock.
Fucking bastard cows.$37 million from taxpayers fund the trapping, poisoning, gassing, and gunning of nearly one million wild animals and birds each year in the name of "livestock protection" and "pest control"
Animals are soaking up precious tax dollars that could be used to feed poor people.Almost two-thirds of all large mammal species are threatened or endangered in the lower 48 states. Less than 10% of all endangered and threatened species in the U.S. are improving.
Despite our prodding, 90% of endangered species have failed to improve their lot. I, for one, have supported them long enough, its time for them to take some responsibility for themselves.About 20% of all endangered and threatened species are harmed by grazing.
Again with the cows.Take a look at this if you dispute my evidence. I think wiping out all non-human life would be the best move we could make if we want to preserve this earth for our enjoyment.
