The problem is....In America, we tend to do things for the largest target audience. In this case, it just so happens to be the scores and scores of fans who love DBZ and stuff like that. Now, granted, I went through my DBZ phase too, but once I really got into it, and discovered the fansubbing scene on IRC (irc.aniverse.com for starters) I realized how much I had been missing out on. You want real anime? Try LastExile, or Wolf's Rain, or things of that nature (all of which you can get info on at http://www.animenfo.com). Fact of the matter is that while the networks here may have one or two good series, they will never have enough good series to bring in enough people to make it viable. Fact of the matter is, if you like anime, and I mean the good stuff, not half the dubbed (don't even get me started on dubbing) junk on tv here...you have 3 choices:
1.Be in japan and watch it there
2.Buy dvds and be ripped off by suncoast or buy the Hong Kong imports
3.What I see as the best option....download it off the net, through IRC or what is now becomming the best option, bit torrent. Check out http://www.animesuki.com for starters. It has some good current series on it.
And for all you trolls out there who don't like anime, perhaps you'd change your tune if you had seen some anime other than pokemon and tentacles.

a more mature evangelion
try rahxephon for size.. right from the beginning you will
get the EVA-feel, and even though it feels a little too
close to being a clone, you will realize after a short while
that it is more mature in every way compared to EVA.. both
in character, story, ending, and production. Oh yeah, especially the ending is completely brilliant.
Of course, some will never get over how much it resembles EVA in many ways, but.. look past that, and you have a brilliant series that is all what EVA only could have wished to be.(EVA was simply too childish in too many ways to appeal to me)

It's just starting to come out on DVD. I expect it to become a hit. -
Perfect solution
Anime. Unlicensed episodes which are not illegal to distribute because there are no licensees outside of Asia. At 150-200 megs per episode, you'd be able to fit quite a few series into 150GB.
An excellent source for unlicensed anime epsiodes, subtitled in English, is AnimeSuki, where they're downloadable via BitTorrent - you know, the P2P App with Brains. Downloads are usually quite snappy.
As an added advantage to collecting unlicensed anime, it's usually quite fun to watch. The downside is that once a series becomes licensed, you have to stop sharing it. Right now, there are several good series being released. I recommend Naruto, Mahoromatic and Wolf's Rain. -

When will they get that anime is not for kids
... Comboy Bebop, Gundam and Tenchi sure aren't, anyway. Sailor Moon arguably is. DBZ could be. The reason these series are being edited is because, to the ignorant minds of many, anime = cartoons and cartoons are only for kids. Way wrong. WAY way wrong.
If you buy these series on DVD, unedited as they are then, you will find that they're rated as 15+ or even 18+. And here we have TV targeting 6-14? God, please let these children watch those series as they were supposed to be when they grow up.
Also, the apparent wussyness of American parents is stunning. I live in Sweden, we have a culture that's arguably one of the most americanized in all of Europe, and if Cowboy Bebop was shown unedited on our TV, I very much doubt there'd be any complaints. And given our legal system (which has slightly more sanity in it than the US one) lawsuits would be out of the question.
Also, stringent rules on content like this, especially when it comes to death and religion, keeps so many good animes off the screen it's tragic. I am thinking series like Hellsing here ... Evangelion would probably have a tough time as well.
Let's all hope that the next generation of American parents know how to raise their children, instead of having the TV networks do it for them, complaining when they see something they think might be harmful. Screw them I say, their kids are going to be exposed to that no matter what, and probably are already (through the Internet, hello Rotten dot com).
