    For me, it was in my university's CS lab. I never used Linux/UNIX's GUI before (only dial-up shell accounts during my high school days) and I think I also used NCSA Mosaic web browser on the school's fast pipe (fractal T1!). Years later, I used my own X11 and Linux on my home computers. :)

    It was in a college/university computer lab (not CS') with an old /. member from our college days. He showed me Linux (Red Hat? Slackware?) and telnet (no SSH yet). I fell in love with the text mode programs like Tin (still use it and test some builds for Urs, the maintainer). I also used Pine, SLiRP, TIA, FTP, etc. on a production machine for school's e-mail services on 14.4k - 56k (only up to 28.8k) dial-up (useful for text modes!).

    I did not run Linux on my own computers until 486 DX2/66. Then, I got stuck with the Red Hat Linux v6.1(?)'s Disk Druid because I didn't know about disk partitioning and stuff. I was scared too. Finally, I got through it with a dual boot setup. Then, I didn't do much. Got bored and frustrated. Then, came v7.1(?) and loved it. Had an extra box for it to be run it for 227 days of uptime because no more Kernel updates and stuff. Then, came Debian which was even better and still use it today.

    I noticed I like all computers and OS': Apple and its Mac OS X, PC with Windows, DOS, and Linux.

    At work and in the past from female co-workers who sit near me hate my typings since they're loud and sometimes fast. One of them instant messaged (IM'ed) me this morning:

    A few weeks ago, another one said "Stop killing/abusing your keyboard!" Bah, I say! Computer geeks love these clicky keyboards. I noticed all females non-computer geeks hate clicy keyboards. Hmm! I hate soft keyboards though and I can't type well with them. :(

    A few years ago, another woman said similiar thing and suggested I get a soft keyboard. WHATEVER!!

    I need to get one of those old, steel, IBM keyboards (Model M) to drive them even more annoyed. Currently I just use the cheap generic ones and from Dell. They're old too and still work. One of my college friends said that I type like a machine gun. :)

    I think I will order Das KB! I can't use those natural keyboards due to lack of thumbs and four fingers on each hand.

    At my university's CS, Pascal was the first programming language to take as a requirement. The sad part was it was the last year before it went away to be replaced by C++. It was in fall semster of 1994, not even the 80s. :P

    I am not alone with this problem. Everyone who lives in Hacienda Heights and Rowland Heights, CA are having similar problems:

    1) Very slow speed, especially during peak hours (i.e. analog modem speed during peak hours). I was told that there are only six T1 lines in this city.

    2) Too many cable modem outages.

    3) Horrible technical support (nothing unusual for any companies).

    4) None of can get DSL because we're too far. IDSL, satellite Internet, etc. are too expensive and slow (i.e. gaming).

    5) The problems are getting worse.

    6) Adelphia@Home is still adding new subscribers. My cable friends and I recently got flyers and postcards.

    I was told Adelphia is going to discontinue @Home and switch subscribers to its PowerLink ISP service. I doubt that will help a lot.

    That was an interesting story. When I had my cranial surgery (due to my locked jaw -- had to open my jaw -- it was so bad that I couldn't stick my tongue out), the doctors had to break some nerves to fix this (from my neck and right side of my head near the ear area).

    After the complex surgery, the right side of my face were irressponsive (i.e. couldn't move and feel). That included my right eye where I couldn't move my eye lids (not even close fully).

    After about two months, I went to another surgery to fix these damaged facial nerves. The doctors fixed this by connecting working nerves to the damaged ones. Basically, they were rerouting these signals as if you were rerouting a network.

    Some of my broken nerves are currently recovered, but it will take years to recovered almost fully (not 100%).
