Peep / Network Auralizer
Peep is a great tool to hear what's going on out there... where the hackers play !
It plays sound whenever an connection is made on a designated port (smtp, domain (DNS), http...) but also can play specific sounds based on events (keywords on log file -> snort, auth.log etc.)

a particular note, duration, or loudness
You mean like this? -
Re:The human mind: A better monitoring system?Precisely. Using the human mind as a filter is the whole point. There is also a project called peep that does this with sound.
Peep - Allows real-time aural monitoring of network information Peep aims to represent network information in real-time (and therefore eliminate searching through large logs of information to find problems) by using sound to represent the vast amount of available information about network status and to help identify network problems and irregularities.
The project looks a bit stalled, but it's still a really cool idea. You could probably find some stories about it in /. archives too, ;) I thought it was neat that apparently nasa follows this philosophy with sounds for astronauts to filter/interpret on the space shuttle. -
Re:I've thought of this.
It's a good idea, and if your machines are noisy enough, you're probably doing it subconsciously already. I used to be able to tell when bad things were happening since it would generate a ton of syslog traffic and the loghost's sync() calls would make a bunch of disk noise.
Check out peep and see how it can be done. -

Re:Virtual Environments - Network Monitors
You're talking about Peep, right?

similar work
The following paper uses sound for a similar purpose: Michael Gilfix and Alva L. Couch, ``Peep (the Network Auralizer): Monitoring Your Network With Sound'' Proceedings of the 2000 Large Installation System Administration Conference (LISA00), New Orleans, LA, USENIX
Info about it can be found here. -
Sounds like Peep
Sounds like Peep, the Network Auralizer, which I learned about from a Slashdot story from almost a year ago. I haven't looked at this Soundwire project much beyond the links above, but from a quick glance, Peep is a lot further along, a lot more flexible, and wider-reaching.

I heard thatIndeed, I'm using similar indicators for GPS navigation so I can hear my approach while I'm driving. Direction and proximity are easily signaled.
You've all seen a similar use. Listen to the approach of the lunar shuttle to the TMA-1 base in "2001: A Space Odyssey".
And fifteen years ago I was listening to network behavior: the RF leakage from a computer or network device can produces recognizable patterns on a radio. I identified excessive directory searches in an application from the background chatter. The higher speeds of current technology makes this more difficult with simple broadcast AM/FM radios.
I also believe that Slashdot discussed Peep, the Network Auralizer which plays sounds based on network activity. But Peep is oriented toward behavior of an entire network, not of specific connections.

Peep - the network auralizer
Actually there is a sourceforge project that you can hear the network traffic as the sound of rain or a forest, the more traffic generated the busier the forest sounds or the harder the rain falls
i have run this and i have to say it beats listening to the sound of a server rooms fans
you can see/download the project here
