I found its actually hard to get a machine that's decent these days, unless you're prepared to put up with a bit of crap.

If you go for the "VISIONTEK Killer" wireless card, it has an Atheros chipset, so you can distro-hop to your hearts content. They also ship it with no OS if you like.

Like it or hate it, Device Manager is a cake-walk to use and anybody can figure it out in a few minutes.

You get "Unknown device" in the device manager and you have no idea what it is or what driver or anything, you can't grab a driver from windows update, because windows update doesn't have it. The only way to know is if the driver is installed that you don't have installed because you don't know what driver you need which is fairly difficult if you're just given a machine, with no information as to what it's components are and expected to install a version of Windows with whatever drivers it needs without opening the case.

At least on Linux you can do a lspci and identify what hardware is there and what drivers you need to install. With stuff like "Hardware Drivers" (in Ubuntu) where you just point and click to install proprietary drivers when you want them, it's not really any worse than Windows at that point.

Is there a good resource for finding Linux friendly hardware?

I have been looking for this because I am in the process of trying to build a machine that is Linux friendly and I have been struggling with this.

Linus uses Apple hardware at the moment to my knowledge.

Personally I never buy desktop's pre-made speicifically because I don't want to be forced to pay for a windows license I don't want, and am not going to use. Sadly, however, I don't get that luxury when it comes to a laptop.

Their problem is supply chain: They frequently do not have certain components in stock (matte displays in particular). If you are looking for something they have in stock, then I highly recommend them. You can customize (on a laptop remember, so there are chasis limits) all the way down to the thermal grease on the processor.

If you start by considering a Dell as your first choice of purchase you are a perfect Apple customer, but it does make you poorly suited to compare PCs against Macs. Dell is neither cheap nor of particularly high quality.

Check out http://avadirect.com/. They sell OS-free laptops and desktops. I've never actually bought from them but I've heard from the grapevine that they're reputable.

Defeating it is usually as easy as adding more text.

It's become a custom of late to bash Sun. And, given the neurotic, manic image that they've been projecting, It's not hard to see why... One minute they're holding their cards close to their chest, the next moment, they throw their hand out on the table and say "whattaya thinka that?"

Even though Sun has a wonderful history of sharing their sources in many things, including many of the foundations on which Linux is built, it's really hard to give them full credit because their message is so... mixed.

Well, it may be the Sun is finally making a comeback. I came very, very close to buying a Sun last week. The deal-breaker was that I could not buy one with 2x 300 GB SCSI drives, in a 1U config, with 4 front-mount drive bays. These guys could, and did so at a price that rocked, and the server itself is just quality hardware.

I wish Sun well - there's plenty about them we can use! (EG: OpenOffice)
