Re:What is the quality?
We're talking broadcast quality video editing here.
Go and look up the cost of something like an AVID video editing system.
Your Mickey Mouse toy home system is not comparable. Apparently, this Linux based system is. -
Re:For a specialized solution
Avid (the video editing and storage folk) make a neat storage array, which can hold up to 8TB in one 39U rack (I know, that's only about a day/day and a half, but you can have a room full of these racks).

Apple's FireWire Not the FirstFor those confused it's not unusual for a product that has had profound influence on the Television Industry to recieve an Emmy. Communications Satellites have been honored, video cards have been honored, DVD technology has been honored, MPEG has been honored, now it's Apple's FireWire high-speed digital interconnect.
Why Apple for it's FireWire and not IEEE for it's same 1394-1995 spec or Sony for it's i.Link (again the same)? Because Apple is the one that did the development and the popularizing of the technology thus their holding the majority of the patents & controlling the licensing.)

Technical Oscar
IIRC, They give out special Technical Oscars.
They aren't awarded at the show, but in a special ceremony before hand.
My former employer, AVID won one, and had it displayed in the lobby for quite some time.
The Mac really has done quite a bit of work in making video editing on a professional level possible. I think that their recognition is a "Good Thing" (tm)

Re:The Software they're using..
Actually M$ sold Softimage to Avid quite a few years ago, in 1998. At last year's Softimage User Group Meeting at SIGGRAPH 2000, they showed at the end a beta port of Softimage running under RedHat 6.2.
Just check their website:

Re:real time content generation? What do they mean by real time content generation?
For starters, much of what Avid does. Real-time effects for news and sports shows, for example.

What about Avid?
I'm kinda surprised nobody has mentioned Avid Technologies (http://www.avid.com/) yet, since they seem to have a lock on Hollywood post-production. May be out of your price range though unless you can pick up a used rig somewhere.

Have you ever seen a pro nonlinear video rig?
While the hardware suggestions on their page may be a bit high... Do some calculations on how much ram and HD space it takes to manipulate 10+ hours of TV quality footage, and the CPU power needed to apply effects, edits, and various other goodies to said footage.
Take a look at some of the equipment on Avid Technology, Inc.'s site. According to one product spec I saw, it allowed up to 1080GB of available storage for collaborative video editing.
While I don't know if the software in question here quite warrants it.... it's not necessarily insane.
