Not Quite There Yet
You mean like this one http://www.baen.com/library/ ?
That seems to be some sort of mix. First book that caught my attention I can't even buy let alone read online
... The possible free books appear to be a very small subset and the books that are listed as "Baen Books" are closer to what I'm talking about but the selection is small and the topic is very narrow (sci-fi fantasy?).
Thanks for demonstrating goodwill in this exact situation to counter the OP's "seriously?" comment.
There's only ever been a few cases I've found out of hundreds where music has been discontinued on Bandcamp and the one instance I know of is a French band Malajube ... even bands like fun. that "graduate" to big labels keep their first releases up on Bandcamp. -

Except that's not true.
Take a look at Baen's ebook website. There are a dozen other publishers listed these days.

Re:Baen is awesome
They seem to be trying to pick up a lot of older authors as well and republish their stuff. I know they've recently been adding some Heinlein and Keith Laumer books and i'm sure there are others who i haven't been actively following. Between new authors and old authors it looks like they're currently adding about 20 books a month, judging by the New Arrivals section. That's certainly more than _i_ can read in a month, but perhaps others read faster than i do or have more free time for books.

Duh
This is why at least three quarters of my ebook purchases are from Baen. They price their regular books fairly reasonably, "hardback" books are about $10 than list price, and when they come out in paperback they're about $2-3 off the list price. And for a lot of books if you're willing to pay a small premium they'll let you get the ARC version ("Advance Reader Copy") before the publication date. They also do monthly bundles of books, five or more books packaged together for the price of two or three books, well worth it if you know you really want at least two of the books in the bundle. Plus they have a free library that will let you try out a large number of books for free (in the hopes that you'll buy more books from that author later of course) and their books are DRM free, because they understand that piracy isn't a real problem.
Hopefully if Baen continues to do well eventually the big publishers will learn from their example. -

It's online for free at the baen library:

Re:H. Beam Piper - Little Fuzzy
Great-King's War is a free download from The Baen Free Library. Although I'll admit that I couldn't finish it --- it read far too much like a dull blow-by-blow description of a wargame (which I believe it is).

Re:Wizard's Bane by Rick Cook
Wizard's Bane is available from the Baen Free Library in a bunch of e-reader formats: http://www.baenebooks.com/p-724-wizards-bane.aspx

Re:Fred Saberhagen's Berserker series
Another one of my favorite series! Courtesy of Baen Books, you can download Berserker Throne for free.
If you are a fan of hard science fiction, your collection is not complete without this series!

The Witches of Karres by James Schmitz
I always enjoyed Schmitz's The Witches of Karres. Courtesy of Baen Books, you can read the first few chapters for free here
Baen Books also maintains a library of free book, Baen Free Library. I say this is worth a look.

Baen's Free Library ebooks
Here's a nice assortment of science fiction and fantasy books, all available in digital format. Some old stuff, some high profile authors, some lesser knowns, some interesting collaborations, Enough to keep you busy for a while. Also, if you go to the local library, look for any CD audio books by Baen Publishing - usually the last CD contains these plus others that you can copy off. http://www.baenebooks.com/c-1-free-library.aspx

Cordwainer SmithSmith wrote science fiction with the imagination of fantasy. His work was extremely innovative for it's time (the 60's), and is still "far out" today. He had a career in psychological warfare, and grew up in China before the Communist revolution. His book "Psychological Warfare" is a classic, and his godfather was Sun Yat Sen, the father or modern China.
His output was very limited, and all set in a unified future history. It is available in two books; The Rediscovery of Man a collection of short stories, and Norstilla, a novel. His work is very unusual, so a short description does not do it justice. As Wikipedia says "Linebarger's stories are unusual, sometimes being written in narrative styles closer to traditional Chinese stories than to most English-language fiction." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cordwainer_Smith.
You can read some of his work on line. I suggest

Re:Some classics
I would definitely suggest Venus Equilateral. See this link to be sure to get the right one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus_EquilateralThere are several books, some without all the stories.
I would add http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Way_Station_(novel) Way Station by Clifford D. Simak.
Not as old, but still a good read (and FREE!)
The Warrior's Apprentice http://www.baenebooks.com/p-1290-warriors-apprentice.aspx
Changer of Worlds http://www.baenebooks.com/p-62-changer-of-worlds.aspx -

Re:Expensive
That sounds reasonable. At least their site has most of it priced at 6 or less. The Items priced higher then that look to be collections or have bonus material like sound tracks. How a book has a sound track is beyond me.

Re:Are we talking human on human battles?
Pandora's Legions is another similar story: lower-tech aliens with an earlier discovery of gravity manipulation invade earth, are defeated, and Humans expand. It's free to read from Baen.

DRM-free ebook edition at Baen
I'm surprised this wasn't linked from either the review of the comments so far, but the wonderful lads at Baen have the DRM-free ebook edition.

Offtopic info....
Good book, IMHO.
For those interested, "Fallen Angels" is available at Jim Baen's Free Library to read online, or download. (linked below)
