And I bet you thought you were joking.

Re:Bring it on!
There's already too many ways out there that'll allow talented people to make and distribute music for the RIAA to retain their stranglehold on the market.
I completely agree: the RIAA was good to set standards for the recording industry when studios were expensive to build and maintain.
Today, any band can put together a decent compilation of songs (a.k.a. album or CD) and distribute it themselves. A little word of mouth advertising and playing local gigs, and if the stuff is good, it will get out there.
How do I know it will get out there? Because of sites like slashdot, digg and delicious: the digital "word of mouth". After all, if some loser's blog about his pet kitty's bowel movements can get hits, I'm sure good music can too.
For example, not that these guys are losers or rant about kitty poo, I ran into Beatallica on digg and it's pretty funny and good: they supposedly even have Metallica's blessing, but there's an issue with the record label which prevents them from putting out an album, but doesn't prevent them from distributing their songs in mp3 format... strangely enough. BTW, "Hey Dude" rocks... ;) -
First Beatallica...now this?!
Sony should NOT stick to music either!! They tried to shut down Beatallica (http://www.beatallica.org/) cuz they created spoof songs based on the Beatles and Metallica. Sony will go after ANYONE - even if you are simple metal d00ds from milwaukee, wisconsin who were just having a good time!
shame on sony - over and over again.

maybe DVD Jon should call Larz and have him step in!

Re:Results not surprising...
The artists that lose big are the big artists.
Somehow I cannot help but thinking that those who have the biggest to lose are the the labels and the lobby groups (RIAA, MPAA, etc). If you look at the survey, those that are less frightenned by the so-called p2p-threat are the "elite" artist. Maybe they already have enough money not to care or get greedy about it (even though Metallica seems picky about losing a cent).
Seems to me that the record majors have done a great job getting the struggling artists to a paranoid high, so these artists would more easily give up anything to their glamorous protectors...
Oh, and about the copyright length, I didn't know that Disney was representing 11% of this survey ;) -
Re:Random Thoughts
And an issue that is just casually glazed over in this debate that the RIAA has ignited is that much of the material traded isn't under the copyright of any RIAA memeber.
I for one only share non-infringing materials. For instance, Beatallica is Beatles songs done in the style of Metallica, very creative, and their web site explicitly states:
If you're having trouble downloading the songs, try the mirror site, or get the songs through Kazaa, WinMX, or some other p2p client.
So I have their permission to share their stuff. And it helps to, because people then don't cut you off from downloading because you're just a leech.
;-)I've found movies to be horribly misnamed -- downloading "Matrix Reloaded" or "Terminator 3" and you'll end up with a different movie, sometimes Swedish porn. I don't understand why people will misname the movies; if it was the MPAA doing it, it would be 700 MB of
/dev/random (or "What the fuck do you think you're doing?") instead of a differently-copyrighted work.Bittorrent seems to be the most accurate in terms of getting what it's named, although BT speeds are random on this DSL line (cable was much better, about 3 times faster overall and about 50 times faster for BT usage). A nice BT page is Suprnova.tk.

Re:not the same, but different
For Beatles crossed with Metallica, check out Beatallica.

Re:The Third Way
ftp is p2p
Does that mean that the FBI will be monitoring
ftp://ftp.slackware.com
ftp://ftp.ker nel.org
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org
ftp://ftp.gnu.org eh?
As far as 'pirating' goes: read here. They're an underground band who actively encourage p2p sharing of their mp3s. If I was in touch w/ any kind of modern music, I'm sure I could find more.
You have to look beyond what the corporate media tells you, instead of buying it lock, stock and barrel.
