Gaim always messes up my buddy list.
Is it me or does loading gaim screw up people's buddylist? By screwing up, I'm referring more to the order of the buddies, than actually removing buddies.
I've stayed far far away after using it several times and it always happens.
On the other hand, plugins for tabbed messaging and logging already exist. AOL just likes to "upgrade" whenever such a plugin exist and breaks the plugin. I think many of them have just given up seeing that there's a lack of motiviation recently since none of the aim patches support the latest version.
The aim patches I know about include:
* DeadAIM
* middle_man
* AIM+ -

Not a problem...

Re:feh.
AIM+ piggybacks onto the official AIM client, offering features like ad removal, automatic logging, and cloning (run two AIM processes at the same time). I use it with AIM 4.x, and all the other features in the official client work just fine.

Plugins and Skins
AOL has waited to long to make this jump. A lot of users have switched to using other clients rather then the AOL client. Millions of people use the AOL client and many of them download other software attempting to alter the client such as AIM+ which allows you to eliminate the ads as well as ad logging. However, if AOL released a client that allowed plugins as well as skins, many people would of not switched to other clients. They could of even kept their ads and (tried) to make it so they couldn't be removed. However, some programmers would create a skin or a plugin rather then creating a new client. And it would be easier for novice users to download a skin and not to learn how to use a new client. I believe that is why winamp has been so popular over the years. Yes, it doesn't have ads, but without plugins or skins I would say it would of been a minority in the market share long ago. One of the main reasons I have switched to GAIM is the plugin support.

AIM+
I use AIM 4.8.2790 with AIM+ 2.2.1. AIM+ is a program that hacks AIM to remove ads, add history, and allow multiple copies of AIM open at a time (called "cloning"). Tabbed IMing is planned in the next version. AIM+ is made by Big-O Software.
NOTE: AIM+ will not work with AIM 5.x, if you've already upgraded you will have to find an installer for AIM v4.8.2790 (the highest 4.x version). -
Interoperability
All you need to know is AIM+! Lots of cool new features, but uses the AIM binaries so they can't block it too easily

Re:It'll never happen with the big guys
One of the main reasons that AOL doesn't want to play nice can be seen at the top of the AIM window.
A nice little ad.
What are these "ads" you speak of? -
