Maya Oh Boya!
I will simply have to try it out. I enjoy 3D modeling and have had a blast with Blender. Perhaps if they get enough downloads they will consider changing the crippled features or offer a middle ground product that is under $500.00. I would buy it if it was reasonably priced. I don't mind not having professional features geared for a motion picture production house. I just want to make awesome 3D stills and some small animations. I don't have a renderfarm nor would I need one. I don't have 12 hours to render a production quality frame on my wimpy PC.
If you simply don't want to pay, look at Blender it is truly amazing. Maya is technically better but you can do quite a bit with Blender and there is a huge community for help and support.

Re:But the question is....
Here we go again. We see something announced for Linux/FreeBSD and assume that that is all it is for. We don't do our research.
If you had done simple research and visited the blender site you would have found that the blender creator software exists for Windoze and the Mac and that the plugin already exists for Windows. By following this URL:
http://www.blender3d.com/BlenderProducts/plugin_do wnload_general.php
You will be able to download the windows plugin for Netscape AND IE.
Research is such a wonderful thing to help prevent you from putting your foot in your mouth. -
Re:Free as in Free Beer
Come on, that link is almost 4 years old. Go to the official site and download the latest version for free. It is not open source but lack of that does not make it non free. It is a good product. I have used the Linux and the Windows versions and it is capable of amazing things.
Alias|wavefront is supposed to be releasing a free (for non commercial use) version of Maya soon. I heard it will embed a watermark in your work. But still, having access and getting exposure to software that costs thousands of dollars is well worth it. -
Re:Blender in general
Take a look at the learning path. It helped me get a good grasp on the interface. I haven't used other editors, so I can't say it's better or worse than any.

Re:Does it support Internet Explorer?
The Blender plugin for Internet Explorer has been available for some time. Here is the link to the Blender 3D plugin download page.

Heaven forbid you actually *go* to the site
Sheesh. Take 3 seconds, click a link, you find their explorer install page
Or you can just post to Slashdot.

Re: Blender
Blender has matured A LOT in the past two years. I'm not a regular Blender user, but I introduced it to a friend and he became quite attached to the thing in less than a month. The interface is extremely weird, but it really shines once you get to understand it. Its main purpose, I think, is to keep you focused on the work at all times, and with one hand on the keyboard and the other on the mouse, kind of what Macintosh or Linux do with their CTRL/APPLE+Left click interfaces.
One thing that never ceases to amaze me is the size of the program. It is hardly more than one Megabyte!!!!! and once you get to know how to use it, there's practically nothing you can't achieve with, say, 3dStudio that blender can't do one way or the other (considering 3dS's signature of around 300 megs, that's saying something).
Finally, for those interested, it's a free download in here: Blender site (no, I'm in no way associated with the company that makes it, I just think it's one hell of a product). Plus, there are a lot of tutorials at their site you can check out to sort out that freaky interface. (oh, and it runs on linux quite well, too) ;-) -

Re:Seriously... check out Freshmeat.netHave you ever played with a 3d rendering program called Blender?
This is a very good substitute for people who don't want to pay five grand for 3D Studio Max, and I've found it to be a very worthy contender. I've used it a lot in my own professional work.
Sure, there's a steep learning curve. But that's the way it is with any program of that complexity.
Best of all, it's free.- I throw rocks at retarded kids
