  1. Re:This has been known for years on Wood Density May Explain Stradivarius Secret · · Score: 1

Not a violin. Ash and maple are common tonewoods for electric guitars but aren't used as tonewood for acoustic instruments, however maple is often used for sides and backs of acoustic instruments like violins, arch top guitarts, etc. Spruce is what is generally used for violins, guitar tops, etc. Sitka Spruce from Canada, Red Spruce from the North Eastern US, and Englemann Spruce from Colorado are commonly used varieties on instruments made in the states (and around the world). These trees are big and they are old. I would imagine you could go higher up the mountains where it is colder to get wood with narrower growth rings but some of these trees were around in Stradavari's time.

  8. I don't think I even care about this... on U.S. Court Denies Webcasters' Stay Petition · · Score: 2, Insightful

I listened to internet "radio" in the beginning just because I could but the novelty soon wore off. I guess there are still people who think it is the dogs bollocks however. I skimmed over the savenetradio.org site and noticed a trend. The bands that are saying net radio has helped them are the bands that don't get played on real radio and most don't have record labels. The listeners who I see whining about this the most are the ones that say they've discovered all of these indie bands through it. So why don't the net radio guys and these independent unsigned bands get together and come up with their own terms for royalties? They could even go a step further and form their own recording industry association and work on creating record labels run by people who actually get it.

I always hear people say that the recording industry needs to change. I don't think it does. I think it needs to be replaced. In the early days of radio artists would make a recording and take them to radio stations to get airplay. This is exactly what the indie artists are doing today with net radio. According to Arbitron ratings, between 50 and 70 million people listen to net radio each month. These numbers are about the same as the size of the US population in urban areas in those early days (69 million in 1930). The RIAA didn't pop up until the early 1950's and at this point the US population was around 150 million, 95% of households had radios, and this was the time where people were going nuts and buying records. When I see the numbers net radio supposedly has today I really think there is probably an opportunity here. Indie artists, online music retailers who sell indie music, podcasters (netcasters for those living in Leoville), and net radio should be able to make something happen. I think the problem is people are looking for something to happen over night and that isn't going to happen. So, even though I am not part of that group of 70 million, I think those 70 million who are obviously listening to this stuff for a reason and not listening to their local Clear Channel or Cox affiliate should probably be a little excited about what this gives them. This is a chance for the RIAA to fail. They're cutting off a new and growing medium and this is your chance to claim it and write the rules and maybe someday dictate to the RIAA and the major labels what it will take for them to be able to play with you.

  9. Re:simply unacceptable on Death Threats In the Blogosphere · · Score: 1

No, I think people on the internet need to grow up. People need to learn how to disagree with someone without launching a personal attack, using profanity, death threats, and threats of sexual assault. The attacks on Kathy Sierra were childish. The comments made towards Scoble and his wife were just downright obscene. If you disagree with Scoble or Maryam and dislike their blogs, then quit reading them. Don't attack them by making childish and obscene comments about their pregnancy. The same goes with any media. There are real people on the other end and they don't deserve it.

The Amiga's killer app was video production which has been trivial now on Macs and Windows XP for years. Heck, I'm even going to throw WM5 in there since it has better browser choices.

It is unrealistic to threaten a cell phone company that you will take your business somewhere else. They don't care. And unless you have been with them for a couple years and use a phone that is a couple of years old you are probably under a contract that you have to pay money to get out of.

To the original poster... How well do you trust your partner? If you were the only person on the plan then you'd have an easy case to argue. Since it is a family plan I think you will find some difficulty arguing this with the carrier. Also, since you used the word partner to describe the other person on the family plan rather than husband, wife, son, or daughter I think you might run into some biggotry when dealing with this.

  20. Re:Microsoft killed the net 0.x companys on Netscape.com Loses Its Identity · · Score: 1

All this Microsoft illegally bundling this stuff with the OS crap is just crap. IBM had more internet apps bundled in OS/2 before Microsoft had even integrated IE into Windows. When IE came out you basically had two choices for Windows. You could download IE for free or you could BUY Netscape Navigator. What most people did was download Navigator and then lie saying they were in education, thus getting it for free.

I've always thought Netscape killed itself. They were making alot of money having the only decent browser out there. After they had their IPO and everyone in the company became a millionaire they just let the market get away. They had a crappy business model. It was too easy to get their product for free which is probably why Microsoft gave theirs away. Even if Microsoft had charged money for IE and Netscape continued charging for Navigator you would still have your free browsers. At that time you already had NCSA Mosaic which anyone could have built upon. IBM's browser in OS/2 and IE both had NCSA roots.

Also as time went on Netscape put more and more crap into their browser like email and a news reader. Navigator became Communicatior and it was bloated crap. IE was small and it started up fast. That is all I needed and that is what I used until Opera came around. I bought that and used it until Phoenix became a stable beta. Now I use Firefox pretty much for everything.

I don't think Microsoft did anything wrong. They were just better at business than everyone else. Someday that will change. I am thinking it will be shortly after 2008 with Mr. Lotus Notes as their lead architect.
