A Little Late
As a developer with some stuff in Debian Jr., I'm happy to see some focus on an honest-to-goodness education project!
There's at least 2 other Education oriented distributions already. Blue Linux and Seul. -
What *kind* of education use?
Desktop? School server? Programming tutition? Educational settop box? Internet box? University level or under 10year olds?
'Education' can mean so many different things... I don't mean this as a troll, but I hope they realise that mere mortals can not use Debian as it is. It'll have to be made alot easier before it can be used in non-techy educational environments. Maybe something like http://www.bluelinux.org. -
Blue Linux.
Already there.
Very cool, simple, and slim distro. Specifically targeted at school computers.

Re:Educational Software on Linux?
- Places to start:
- The K12 Linux in Schools Project has some links and a client/server package of their own.
- Some of theKDE Edutainment software looks promising.
- Open Source Schools carries some in depth discussions of educational software. (Scroll Down and you'll currently see a review of Zope used as a gradebook.)
- The Simple End User Linux people have a large collection of nifty educational applications, and they are currently putting together an iso.
- Schoolforge keeps a small list of educational software. Follow the links there to find things like:
- Blue Linux, a distro that specializes in educational software.
-
Blue EDU
Besides K12LTSP, there's Blue EDU. Look both of them over and then offer to help out if you're interested in making your proposal a reality.

Lets not forget BlueEDU
BlueEDU is building a Linux Distribution only for the school systems. It will not be sold only distributed to schools. They are pushing to move Linux into the classroom by making it easier to use for people ages 5+ they can really use your help with donations to allow them to go pick up cheap old hardware (like the schools have) in order to fully test the distribution before they distribute it Check here for more information

Re:an interesting site
OpenSourceSchools.org is very informative. Lots of good information reguarding the use of and the software avaliable to others. They are a good resource, Schoolforge.net will be a great place also to find information on the use of Open Source Software in the school systems. There are many great sites for educational software even RedHat has an educational focus. Blue Linux is building a BlueEDU Distribution only for the purpose of Linux in the educational district.
