Re:I really don't think thats it
While it's fun to bash the liberals for political-correctness, you're very wrong about the roots of censorship.
I said only that censorship efforts also come from the left, which even by your sources, is demonstrably true. You'll note that item number 5 on the ALA Most Frequently Challenged Books list is Huckleberry Finn, which in recent years has generally been challenged from the left.
I agree that the majority of censorship efforts currently come from the political right, but no political group should pretend that it's only *other* people who would ever try to suppress information. Inappropriate use of power is a *human* problem, not a conservative or liberal problem. -
Re:bad argument in the article summary
only a handful of people wanted to allow women to vote?
if you dont count all the women......
Many women were opponents of universal sufferage. Tarbell's attitude was not at all uncommon, to the extent that there was an active anti-sufferage women's movement. Google on "women opposed sufferage" to find out more.
Sadly, it probably needs to be said that I am fully in favour of women's sufferage, although blackly amused by the claims that it would usher in an era of peaceful prosperity, rather than the bloodiest century in human history. And if anyone thinks women were generally opposed to war in the 20th century, google "women white feather britain" before you post... -
Bryan v. McKinleyNo one really cares whether William Jennings Bryan should've won the 1896 election
Speak for yourself, goon! I'd say you're a closet McKinleyite if you're not willing to admit that the most important election of the 19th century was stolen by that blasted benevolent assimilationist! It's obvious the election was stolen using those new-fangled ink pen ballots manufactured by Ye Olde Diebold. At least one citizen understood that you can cast a vote with a piece of cold steel much more effectively than you can with a ballot!

Re:Hmm
It was in Massachusetts, and it was Governor Gerry, a Democratic-Republican (you will sometimes hear Democratic-Republicans described as Republicans, as on the White House website, but in fact what institutional continuity there has been links the Democratic Party to the Democratic-Republicans; the Republican Party was a splinter group that claimed to better represent the original values of the D-Rs, and at the time the Republican Party was first founded, when the Republicans were anti-slavery and the Democrats pro-slavery, that was probably true). Gerry was blamed for a redistricting plan that separated historically linked communities (such as Bradford and Haverhill) from one another for the purpose of creating a Dem-Rep-safe district. An 1812 political cartoon depicting the new district as a kind of dragon, with the caption "The Gerry-mander," is responsible for the word. It is a very common term in US political language. Written from within the Gerrymander.

Re:My last Star Trek rant.
I've seen a little of this show. It does seem to be mostly pretty bad, but I don't quite see how we can blame GR for it. Yeah, they put his name on it, but that's just an example of using the name of a retired or dead SF person as a kind of brand name. One of SF's more depressing trends.

Re:So sad
How do you get rid of nasty infections? Autoclave! Heat things up enough to smoke out all those nasty hoomins and things can get back to normal around here.
As for volcanos, it looks like the production of CO/CO2 in eruptions can have an effect on global warming. It turns out, however, that the ash/SO2 released into the atmosphere has a cooling effect. It also helps scatter sunlight, allowing for more robust tree growth which leads to more carbon being taken out of the atmosphere.
So, all we need to happen is for the Yellowstone (NetBSD) volcano to erupt (supposed to be violent enough to wipe out hoomanity) and fill the skys with enough ash and SO2 to bring on Fimbulwinter to slow down global warming. Or have a big rock smack into the Indian Ocean. -
Re:It will not be over by summer
You've got to be kidding. The US conduct in the Philippines is a national shame, widely condemned at the time by people like Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain). But there is a parallel: we promised them freedom from Spain, then decided to keep it as a colony, and the people rebelled.
What we did in the Philippines was to kill about a million people, according to reports by US generals! See here, for example.

Re:overtime issuesSmart employers will always care about you
Ah yes, if only we'd go back to the good old days of the unfettered free market when smart employers loved their employees to death...
People regularly forget the past, in this case that government intervention evolved for good reason.

Is this illegal, or just annoying?
"To my mind, this is irregular. It is un-English; it is un-American; it is French."*
Not sure if it is illegal, probably not, but it sure as hell is annoying!

Re:Our God will Eat Your Moon!
Look here for Mark Twain's use-a-solar-eclipse-to-get-power story from "A Conneticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court."

Re:Hmm...
I suggest Mark Twain's "The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg".

Re:How is that amusing?it's not only the grammar. the frequent use of compound words adds to this too. (see Mark Twains essay The awfull German language for this)
