Re:License Code?> I thought Roblimo said this was Free software?
No, Roblimo-quoting-ZioPino said it was free software, not Free software.>rant>
If you insist upon being a license zealot, at least try to be a literate one. There are few things that bother me more than people who cry wolf in terms of "invasion of privacy" or "misuse of term Free" before really even reading what they're berating.
</rant>
One of the highest-ranked posts on this thread so far mentioned being a developer who already uses a native version of this product and got some benefit from the Java version, which this story addresses. At least one guy benefitted from this.
Several people moderated him up, apparently because they thought the information he had share regarding this program was worth the time of others. Apparently, more than one guy benefitted from this.
All I'm saying is, there's no point in trying to start a flame war, when [hopefully] most Slashdot readers are intelligent enough to realize that free in this context did not imply open source (in the general, nonpolitically stunted meaning of the term). As such, what did you hope to contribute to the discussion with your post?
Just a thought.

KDE only?Their download page cites RedHat with KDE as a requirement. Does this mean that JBuilder Foundation is integrated with KDE?
And would it be possible to run JBF with any other distros than RedHat?

Did you forget Inprise?
Insprise has ported a fast version of 1.2 to linux. It can be found here:
http://www.borland.com/jbuilder/linux/
Enjoy!

JBuilder 3 preview
Maybe you'd like to test the preview of Borland's Linux version of JBuilder 3, it's available here.
BTW, the Blackdown folks also seem to make progress with their Linux 1.2.2 JDK, see the updated status page. -
Re:Where is fscking JIT? I've been waiting 3 years
You can download the Borland JIT, free, here. We measure it to be 30% faster than then JIT included in the current JDK 1.2 for Linux.

The JIT is available NOW !
And you can download it for free from here

Borland's commitment to LinuxCheck out
Borland is seriously committing to Linux, which is good to see. And I like the "well, what do you want" angle instead of a "this is what we want you to have" approach to the project. I've used Borland Delphi & C++ Builder (cut my teeth on Borland's C++ v1.0
:) ) for quite some time, and quite frankly, they rock. A bit weak on debugging, but there's always the excellent Numega debug tools to help out...What Borland must focus on is making the path for Win * programmers to migrate to Linux as easy and intuitive as possible. This may irk the hardcore "never run windows" Linux programmers; how about it if they produce a development tool with skins like WinAmp, to please both camps?

Fortunately, the answer is a resounding YES!!!
Check out the following web page and ftp site:

ftp://ftp.xraylith. wisc.edu/pub/khan/gnu-win32/mingw32/gcc-2.95
I personally use these tools.
Here is a link to a Win32 API help file as well.

Re:Premature?
Just what I was thinking. Here's the official announcement: http://www.borland.com/about/press/1999/commit2li
n ux.html ... ain't exactly a solid annoucement regarding Delphi - it's more positive for JBuilder. -
Re:Mmmm.. Borland
Probably. Of course, getting $125,000,000 from Microsoft (see Inprise's press release) probably didn't hurt, either.
-
No, that can't have been it.
Because the products (Delphi, C++B, and so on) are *still* known as BORLAND Delphi, and so on. It became a "brand name" owned by Inprise, in stead of the name of the company.
The latest development (a month or two ago) is that they seem to be partially backing out of the name change: Inprise now has two divisions: "Inprise" for "enterprise" software, and "Borland.com" as the development tool maker and marketer.
But anyway, look at their website ( http://www.borland.com) and you'll see that the packaging says "Borland" just like it always did -- even when the URL was "inprise.com".
