What utter arrogance.
I think a lot of folks on slashdot that have problems with these people do so simply because while they don't care about transgender/gay/whatever, they _do_ care about calling a spade a spade. Since saying that a man is a woman clashes with things pretty hard.
Having behaviours typically ascribed to women does not make you a woman. Same with men.
It's actually been found that some Transgendered people have different brain chemistry than "typical" gendered people. There's also theories that certain hormones or conditions in the womb can cause a predisposition towards transgenderism.
There's a whole lot of anti-LGBI bigotry in this mess here on
/., but this is the one that keeps coming up. "Transwomen don't get to be women because we decide they're men." This is like the 10th fucking comment that's said that or something similar.Well, who the fuck are you guys to decide someone else's identity for them!?
"You don't get to spend money on a car, what the fuck do you think you're doing, you're a Jew, you pinch every pinny you get mister! A spade's a spade, har har!"
"College? Boy, you're black, what makes you think you belong at MIT?! Hey now, I'm just saying, a Spade's a Spade. Now you go put on that KFC uniform and know your place, there aren't any black engineers out there."
"Honey, a doctor? You're a woman. You should be a nurse, don't you want to wear a pretty dress? A Spade's a Spade, after all, and you should know your place."
What utter arrogance.
Being Transgendered is not just a choice a Transgendered person makes out of the fucking blue one day. They don't just wake up and go "Well, I feel like a skirt today, and my Kilt is in the wash, guess I'll wear that red satin number."
Transmen and Transwomen spend years if not decades dealing with the knowledge -- not feeling, knowledge -- that they're the wrong gender. When available, they go through therapy that confirms this -- which is often the first time many Transmen and Transwomen realize just what is going on.
That's assuming they don't kill themselves first -- the suicide rate for transgendered people, especially transgender teenagers, is utterly horrifying. Partially because of people saying ignorant anti-LGBI crap like the stuff that's been thrown about in this thread.
And it's not even fucking binary. There's a thing called being "Genderqueer" or "Non-Binary" where people don't associate with either man or woman, at least not 100%.
I know it's a stretch, but I expect less ignorance on
/., even though "lol trannies" is still a hiiiilarious joke in the gamer and geek communities. Hell, even Reddit is less of a cesspool than this mess has been. For further reading I'd suggest starting with these two FAQs about Transgenderism, just as a start.

Thanks for the insightI quoted you over on johntaylorgatto.com:
---
Karl Marx famously wrote in his Communist Manifesto in 1888:
But, you will say, we destroy the most hallowed of relations, when we replace home education by social.
But Horace Mann makes Marx look like a Johnny-come-lately by writing in 1841:Let the common school be expanded to its capabilities, let it be worked with the efficiency of which it is susceptible, and nine-tenths of the crimes in the penal code would become obsolete; the long catalogue of human ills would be abridged
And let's not forget John Dewey who in 1907 wrote in his School and Society:Whenever we have in mind the discussion of a new movement in education, it is especially necessary to take the broader, or social view.
Today, I read a short stinging rebuttal in a Slashdot comment:the modern education is supposed to make kids fit better into society, so how come they are bigger misfits then any generation before them?

Re:Can someone explain...
Personally there's only two reasons I ever run IE. The first is that there are a few sites that I have to use that will only work with IE. I've been trying to pressure the owners to get rid of the IE only functions but thus far no luck. The second is that the authentication for the web proxy at work (Novell Border Manager) will only let you authenticate using IE (it uses client side VB script for something, I'm not sure what). I've complained and hopefully we'll be getting a different proxy soon (it's also very flaky and keeps falling over). The work around I've got set up for it is on my own web site theres a page that refreshes it self ever 4 minutes 49 seconds. I point IE at that and authenticate then fire up Mozilla for my web browsing. IE just sits in the background keeping the authenticated link alive.
The sad fact, according to the stats a page on my site, is that something like 80-90% of hits are from IE. Obviously that's going to vary from site to site (I noticed that the stats for another page show IE at only about 65%) but until other browsers start to take a serious bite out of that margin site owners aren't goign to bother to change.

Why mysql? OR perl for that matter?
IMO Perl is rapidly losing steam due to the enormous popularity of PHP. PHP is easier to learn, faster to master and less confusing to begin with. Not to mention, PHP's online documentation is really hard to beat sporting many easy to follow examples, a very functional layout, and features (such as the http://php.net/ search) that i'm pretty sure i've only seen mysql.com adopt.
Granted, PHP is not great for everything, but for small to medium websites (and arguably large websites as well, I know of some corporations that use PHP, see bravenet.com, one of the largest providers of ready-to-run webmaster tools. They use PHP quite extensively.). For rapid application development, it's a dream.
As we come closer to PHP5 (which is RC2 now) we're also seeing the integration of sqlite as an option which may appeal to people who just want to write small blogs and other applications which simply do not demand the need of mammoths like mysql or postgresql. This means less headache for budding programmers, and easier migration of applications since sqlite does not require an SQL server.

Re:Yes
It's just easier to use a gui - not faster but certainly easier.
Maybe for you it is, personally I find a nice clean xml config file way easier to deal with.
I remember one incident trying to get iis to serve up a file. I had to alter the "security" settings in no less than 3 different iis menus befor the frickin thing would serve it up.
The menus are like a maze that one must climb through. The feature that you want could be anywhere in that maze. With XML and a decent editor you can just do a find.
they fall somewhat short on some of the advanced features businesses need for enterprise apps
Or perhaps just think they need after a bunch of marketing mumbojumbo. There are pretty big sites on the net that use Apachr/PHP, Bravenet.com comes to mind, you could probably find others at netcraft.com I don't use this setup personally, but I see a quite a few large sites that do, and they seem to be making money.
it's java for windows basically
I will never understand why people would write in a "java for windows" when they can write in a Java for all operating systems. C# seems to me like a less sophisticated version of Java that has the added drawback of locking you in to a single platform. -

Re:Webrings have been good for linux
I disagree. I haven't used webrings for a couple years, but when I did, I found them to be almost useless. Half of the time I would get a 404 Page not found error. It only made me frustrated and I just started using search engines to find related linux pages. Some websites would even become a part of a webring for the sole purpose of increasing traffic to their site! I remember hitting "next site" on the linux webring, and finding something completely unrelated.
Off the topic of linux webrings, there exists quite a few sites that are designed to let anyone create and manage webrings. An example is Ring Surf. The site claims they have over 20,000 rings. Other sites that offer many tools for webmasters, such as Bravenet offer ring setup as well.
As for me, I never joined the cult of webrings because I found them to be useless and didn't want to waste the space on my pages. I'm surprised webrings lasted as long as they did. -

Re:OK ! SlashDotting Contest !
If you look at the web server stats most of the people who hit the site are using winblows. Is the evil empire forced down the throats of the hoards from slashdot by their employers?
And some poor sap is still running windows 3.1.

Re:OK ! SlashDotting Contest !
Actually, according to the site's webcounter stats, the site's been at 29 hits for the last 6 months, and now it's over 20,000.
The webmistress, "drooling@fangirl.org", is almost certainly going to be drooling when she checks her webcounter stats... -
Re:It's an amusing idea...
Amusing indeed.
This is what the slashdot effect actually looks like -
Slashdot readership stats ... get 'em fresh!
Check these links!
OS being used and
Browser being used
and
9 poor saps are surfing at 640x480.
IE5 on Windows 2000 easily the most popular OS amongst current readership (probably UK readers in their offices).
It seems some people are using IE2.0 (don't believe it), and Konqueror is beating Opera.
I'm most impressed by the fact 2 people just read the page using Amigas .... go boys go!! -

Re:Land of the free?
Interesting that this came out of Russia.
This did not come out of russia. David McNab says so right here.
He also says...
The Russian URL is just a redirector.
The site is hosted in the USA, at http://thehealingbreath.com/freeweb.
The program was developed entirely in New Zealand. -

It's still in windoze beta. One of the kooler features shows Bravenet Messenger users who are browsing the same web page as you are. (current bravenet community for /. is ~ 5-10 users; lets see if this number improves as a result of this post).
