Burton Photo Packs
The Resolution has a laptop compartment.
They just released their 2012 gear this weekend. Definitely check them out in person.
Haven't used their photo packs, but I've had good luck with lots of their other packs over the years. -
Re:obviously
Bleh, such a bad solution for skiing . . .
Sunglasses are a poor substitute for a good pair of goggles.
If you really want music while you're on the mountain, lots of helmets now have built in headphones (some of them have Bluetooth as well)
Of course, you need to tap something into the headphones, but there are several ski shells that are designed with iPod's in mind . . . some even have controls built into the sleeves. Hell, there are even ridiculously expensive coats with built in iPods.
If you don't have the cash to drop on a nice shell, there's also some crazy gloves that are designed so that the wheel will still work through the glove. (Silly marketing tech sheet is here.)
Note: I'm not affiliated with any of the stores I linked to, they were just the first results of a cursory google search . . . -
Gravis "urban" bags
You might want to check out the bags section of Gravis footwear. Padded "floating" laptop holster, big enough even for 17" desktop replacements, and plenty of pockets for all your cables and reasonably rain-proof. Although they might be a little over your initial budget, at least it won't make you look (and feel) like just another nerd who's equipment would likely be stolen. I myself carry the 2003 special edition Metro bag, and everybody is amazed that it contains a laptop...

Re:New Design:
Normally I use my iPod without really looking at it: while driving (car or bicycle) or without getting it out of my coat pocket (to avoid getting too much attention of thugs).
There's an iPod Jacket specially designed with controls on the sleeve, so you don't have to pull it out of your jacket to access the controls. And if you use it while driving, well then you can get an Alpine system or a BMW that works with it! Ofcourse, with the money you'd be spending, you could simply hire a live band to follow you around.

Re:The solution to the dying iPod battery is ...
Of course walking around wearing a pricey pair of headphones isn't a giveaway that you're probably listening to a pricey music player. At least it doesn't ID it as an iPod, I guess.
On a more serious note, I have never understood the iPod as status symbol/fashion accessory anyways. In fact, I find it quite annoying (if I see one more damn mini on somebody's arm who isn't jogging or working out I'm going to f***ing scream). I prefer to keep it safely tucked away in the bottom of my backpack with only the remote protruding, and of course the telltale while earphones, though that because I'm too lazy and cheap to get a different pair of headphones. I've even toyed with sewing the remote into the strap of my backpack, something similar to this or this, both of which are unfortunately lacking compared to my current backpack, IMHO.
The only thing I dislike about this setup is that the remote doesn't give you full control, but who knows, maybe Apple will fix that with the next iPod rev. -
Burton iPod jacket
While this iPod jacket from Burton is probably not bizarre pastiche enough to make the fashion show, I'd say it's a practical example of Wearable Technology.

Burton or Gravis
Burton Snowboards and their subsidiary Gravis Shoes make several packs that can take a lot of abuse. I have the Gravis Metro and love it, while a friend picked up the Burton Infantry pack for his 15" Powerbook. The bags are designed to be abused around the world by lazy snowboarders. They can definitely handle a light jog.

Re:Why in your backpack?
burton makes a variety of solar chargers. I've been using the SOLAR-PAK to trickle charge "AA" batteries. but it will not power my cell charger in anything but the most direct sunlight. It still works great for keeping an endless supply of batteries for radios, flashlights etc.

How can you tell?
has just released a very, very nice snowboarding jacket called the Analog Clone
How can you tell its "very, very nice"? An important ingredient in any piece of clothing is what it looks like. The photos on Burton's website are so badly exposed that I can't see the jacket at all.
I would be much more likely to shell our a grand for a jacket if I knew what it looked like. -
Re:make a fashion statement!
I too carry a shoulder pack, by Burton (not the exact bag but similar) - the Kelty didn't have the "size for the buck" factor that I needed. I got a larger bag because I live in Las Vegas and drive a Jeep and don't like leaving anything of value in my car with the top off. It has room for my CD binder, my day timer (sorry, no palm for this geek - I prefer the old fashioned method that doesn't need to be backed up) it has a cell phone pocket on teh shoulder strap perfect for 99% of the phones out there (and water resistant too !!) plus a pouch that is perfect for me to carry my insulin (yuppers, a diabetic geek). The front pocket is perfect sized for my CD/MP3 plater. It even has a pocket on the side that is perfect size for the 1 Litre coke bottles (Diet of course
;). This bag goes where ever I go and doesn't look clunky and is quite comfortable for a day of walking on the Las Vegas Strip. Ok, Im done advertising.
