Re:Canada's TV is pathetic
What do you mean that Canada is always copying from the US? What about "un gars, une fille", exported around the world? http://www.mcc.gouv.qc.ca/publications/culture_qu
e bec_eng.pdf
Or about Just for Laughs Gags, also exported around the world? http://goliath.ecnext.com/coms2/summary_0199-47978 72_ITM
There are many more I could list if I wasn't too lazy to check for references on the web. "Le temps d'une paix", "Les filles de Caleb", etc...
Oh... You are talking about ENGLISH Canadian productions. You seams to put all Canadians on the same boat. To be fair, English Canada does produces "Little Mosque on the prairie", also original and IIRC, exported.
Granted, for some reason, it is very hard to convince English Canadians to watch Canadian made shows and even more, Canadian movies. However, in French Canada, in most recent years localy produced movies beat the American movies at the box office, like "Bon cop, bad cop" and "Nitro":

Please, when it comes to Canadian culture, be specific about which language you are talking about. Slashdot is read internationally and we should not generalize about Canadian cultures when there are three main ones (English, French and Aboriginal). -
Re:RIAA should address the causeActually, duplicating some of a CD or cassette tape for a friend or family member has long been accepted as fair-use - ie not requiring authorization from the copyright holder.
So is duplicating some of a book.
Not quite sure if it's the same because I didn't RTA, but the French-Canadian equivalent of the RIAA recently did a raid on recordable media. What they did is go to some flea markets to actually shut down the kiosks that were obviously selling illegal copies (French link). And it did work, because when they came back the next week, 60% of the CD kiosks at those markets were gone.
This is probably what the RIAA is looking to do, shut down people who *sell* illegal CDs, not people who simply make a backup copy for their friend and such.

Gee, I must have missed that development.

Re:Groklaw has a good story ..Its possible that one of the other big propriatory software companies, like Adobe, could be behind it. We may never know.
So lets ask Google:
- "Royal Bank of Canada Microsoft": 7,990 hits
- "R.. B.. C.. Compaq": 1,690 hits
- "R.. B.. C.. IBM": 7,960 hits
- ... Adobe: 1,910 hits
- ... The Canopy Group": 12 hits
- ... Bill Gates": 377 hits
Hey, found a link there...:
- In July this year, the new appointed Chief Privacy Strategist Peter Cullen for Microsoft came from the Royal Bank of Canada.-
... Paul Allen: 35 hitsBut according to an intersting post on OSNews by Roberto here, "Baystar Capital" and not the Royal Bank should be the connection... but hits there surely have been influenced already with rumor-news...

can't you tell by my ridiculous accent?
The more interesting fact is the word "courriel" was coined by a professor in Montreal.
If the French are working so hard to keep their language pure, why did they deicde to use a word a French-Speaking Canadian came up with?
