Re:Non-story
So, what you're saying is that, obviously, the distribution needs to change it's name to Chinstrap Linux.

Re:Non-story
And in case anyone doesn't know, the reason that two projects could come up with the same (odd) name, it's because 'Gentoo' is a type of penguin. So, when you name your project after a common thing, it's a risk you take.

Gentoo is not a made-up word.
if you want to get picky:
\Gen*too"\ (j[e^]n*t[=oo]"), n.; pl. Gentoos (-t[=oo]z"). A penguin (Pygosceles t[ae]niata). [Falkland Is.]

It's a type of penguin. A cute one at that. See this website for details and pictures. -
Re:Question: How Long Do US Telecos Retain "data"I don't have an awnser for you about telco's, but from a small ISP's (4000 suscribers) perspective, No data is loged. I used to work at a since dead ISP CapuNet and we never paid any attention to the traffic that passed through our network other then, the traffic patterns and link utilization of the main trunks we had. As far as I know, NO logging of headers or raw data was done by us. The only time that would pay attention is in the event that someone is sending an obscene amount of email (notified by outside complaints) or if there was a DDOS attack from or against our clients.

Gentoo Etymology (Why's it called that?)I think it is worth mentioning the etymology of the name "Gentoo" for this distro. I believe that back in the day, it used to be called "Enoch", but then they decided that they needed a new name... something based on penguins (of course!). Thus Gentoo was chosen, being (I think) a type of penguin known for being the best and fastest swimmer of all penguins.
So here's some obligatory Gentoo links for you zoologoy freaks:
Gentoo penguin : "The Gentoo penguin is a member of the genus Pygoscelis, which contains two other members, the Adelie and the Chinstrap. When inspecting the three, the Adelie looks more like the odd one in the group of three. Chinstraps and Gentoos share more morphological features, but the Gentoo is the most colorful of the three with its orangish beak and pinkish-orange feet. They can also be positively identified by an interorbit band of plumage that runs superiorly over the head."
Seriously though, Gentoo Linux sounds really cool. I'm a die-hard Debian guy (especially with Woody going stable in May)... but I plan on giving Gentoo a try this week. And I wish the best to the developers.Pete & Barbara's Page : "Males have their maximum weight of about 8 kg just before moulting and their minimum weight of about 5.5kg just before mating. For females the maximum weight is 7.5kg just before moulting but their weight drops to below 5 kg when guarding the chicks in the nest."
Gentoo Penguin: 10 Facts : "Adults can be found throughout the year on breeding islands indicating that they are relatively sedentary. They feed on Rock cod, amphipods and cephalopods (mainly squid). Females tend to eat more krill than the males, while the males tend to eat more fish than the females. It is thought that gentoo penguins are gregarious at sea."
Penguin Chicks : Come on... everyone loves baby animals!

Looking for a new DSL provider? If you're looking for a new DSL provider, I'd highly recommend checking out DSL Reports. In the DSL Finder section, you can even search for DSL providers by Zip Code.
And, no, I don't work for them, but I did find my current DSL provider (CapuNet, which I'm very pleased with) through this method.

I read it
My particular ISP allows me to run just about anything over my DSL... except IRC bots!

They are not selling you security...
They're selling you high speed internet access. My DSL provider, CapuNet, displays a very sensible article about security in their customer support section. It basically says, your machine is valuble because it has a high speed connection, so do something to secure it. I agree, and that's all they need to say. It is up to the customer to weigh the risks, rewards, and options and act accordingly.
There are plenty of firewall and security products out there, and if your computer gets comprimised, it is not the fault of the service provider. For those hear on
/., probably the one that many would be interested in is the NetBSD firewall solution. If you don't have a machine to dedicate as a firewall, there are plenty of others, including free software like ZoneAlarm. One of the funniest things about this, though, is that a lot of the port scans and other intrusion attempts that people get are coming from their ISP. It would be nice if this was to benefit the customer, but I think it's mainly just to keep an eye on the customer instead. -
