By the end of this summer you'll be able to buy the Dell 24" LCD for only around $700(!) [...]
I read the linked article but I didn't see it mentioned that the LCD will be going for $700 by the end of the summer:-/. Did I just miss that part or is this forecast covered elsewhere?
It would be rather surreal to accidently answer the phone. You'd have to time that pretty well.
Actually, with my current candybar-shaped phone (Nokia 3650), that's not as hard as you might think;). It's just a matter of the phone ringing (in my pocket) and then accidentally pressing the "Answer" button against my keys or something in the process of pulling the phone from my pocket.
While the idea of a Walkman phone is cool, I'd rather have a clamshell phone -- if only because, with all the buttons on the inside, it's harder (or impossible) to accidentally answer or hang up the phone while it's in my pocket. So, the one I'm waiting for is the Sony Ericsson Z800. With Bluetooth, Infrared, MP3/AAC support, it has just about all I could ask for.
Still, I'm also waiting to see if/when it'll make Apple's list of iSync-compatible phones -- being able to sync with my Powerbook (as I do now with my Nokia 3650) is pretty handy. That, and I'm hoping that an unlocked version won't cost me an arm and a leg (I'm in the US on T-Mobile, fwiw).
That's an intriguing idea, but would that mean that the output would be limited to standard tv (NTSC) resolution? That could hamper the clarity of some charts & graphs, I would imagine.
If the original movie is no longer under copyright but the derivative still is, could I write my own Star Wars story using Luke, Leia, etc... or would they (the characters) be protected still by the derivative work??
I can't speak to the copyright issue but, if by some miracle you and I are still alive when the copyrights expire, I believe you'd still have to deal with trademarks on the various characters (Lando(R), Yoda(R) and so on). And, there's a chance I may be wrong about this, but it does appear that trademarks can be renewed indefinitely.
If their goal is to allow people to burn a CD of their work (which would appear to be the case), why not distribute FLACs as well? For those unaware, FLAC is an open source codec which stands for "Free Lossless Audio Codec". It's like WAVs in that it's lossless but the files are much smaller since they're compressed:).
Matt, I was amused by your "no cookie" comment about George Lucas:). I have my prefs set to automatically add +1 to friends and this way I'll be able to more easily notice your posts in the future.
My first thought was "why MSIE only?" but then upon looking closer discovered that it only seems to be more or less replicating the facility already built into Firefox and Safari.
Besides, there's always the Googlebar for Firefox:). (It doesn't have this newfangled "Browse By Name" feature, but that sounds dubiously useful in any case.)
Feel free to recommend it to your mother (Bug 237727 - Fixed - "Installer should delete certain files if we install over an existing firefox installation"). You'll have to copy-n-paste the URL as Bugzilla declines referers from Slashdot.
the biggest failure is that a $29.00 Geforce 3 card that can be had from most anywhere is as fast as this and much more compatable across the board.
Not to be a skeptic;), but do you have a store in mind where I could buy a $29 non-MX/crippled Geforce 3 card? I checked PriceGrabber and NewEgg and couldn't find any:-/.
When it comes to Tetris or other arcade games, it's easy enough to find a PC clone. But, are there any decent win32 clones of Q*Bert? I've been searching for years but still haven't found one.
And FWIW, I'm also a sucker for Arkanoid clones. The latest I've found is BreakQuest which (will be) shareware and is currently in beta (4 levels or so in the beta). And, Jardinains isn't bad either but there's no save-game functionality so even advanced players end up starting at the beginning each time:(.
As soon as mentioned Century Media, I realized that you must have good taste in music;). Out of curiosity, what are some of the CM bands that you enjoy? (And, FWIW, I'm still waiting for them to release any albums as SACD.)
Theora is Xiph.Org's first publicly released video codec, intended for use within the Ogg's project's Ogg multimedia streaming system.

I can't put my finger on what it is, but there is something about KDE's interface that makes me angry. That may sound dumb, but I can only use KDE for a short while because it is emotionally exhausting to me and always leaves me feeling irritated.
It may be KDE's tight letter spacing in menus that's getting to you (screenshot). As the article puts it, menus "read like a sentence instead of being wisely spaced out". I couldn't put my finger on my KDE-anger either, but I'm now thinking that the menu spacing may have something to do with it;).
It's about as supported on OSX as it is on Linux or Windows, the one exception being that there is a Windows only tool to create a database of all your mp3's ID3 tags, allowing you to play based on genre, etc... I believe there is an OSS project to do this for unix-y systems, haven't tried it. Haven't even tried the program iRiver supplies either--mostly due to the fact that it dosent work (at the moment, anyway) with oggs.
Isn't the database needed to enable searching? And, iRipDB is the Unix-y tool of which you speak, but there's no OSX port so far:(.
q6 is imperceptible from redbook in 19/20 samples for me, LAME --alt preset extreme (200-220 kbps VBR for most samples) is better at about 29/30 samples.
So, have you discovered an Ogg setting which gets you the quality level of LAME -- alt preset extreme?
That said, I encode everything at -q 6 (about 192Kbps)--for the purpose of playing on my stereo system. Sometimes vorbis encodes at up to 220Kbps on more complicated music. Oftentimes, it's around 160-170Kbps. The difference isn't appreciable between 192 or 320 or even 500, im my experience.
I'd like to hear more about how you decided on -q 6 for Oggs. I'm an audiophile and I'm considering digitizing my CD collection (over 200) for use with a portable player (which I've yet to buy). Would you say that -q 6 is imperceptible from Redbook audio in most situations?
PS I sure wish that someone would create a portable Ogg player with OSX support:-/.

Looks like a dupe. ("AOL is apparently dividing into four units...")

Could someone enlighten me as to the origin of this meme? It's amusing, of course, but a Google search wasn't much help :(.

For better or for worse, only natural-born citizens of the US may become president (which would preclude Arnold).

You are aware that much of death metal (and likely rap) is an act -- a stage persona?
