Re:Why
I make all my phonecalls and texts with a Nokia 6015i "dumbphone" http://www.cellphones.ca/cell-phones/nokia-6015i/specs/ Yes, I do have a "smartphone", but the greedy asshole cell carriers insist on an extra "data plan" charge for smartphones. So I don't bother getting a sim card or a plan for it. I leave it off except when I'm using it. The smartphone is a mediocre mp3-player/FM-radio/ebook-reader/web-browser/etc, but I'm *NOT* going to pay extra for connecting it versus the Nokia.

What raises a red flag...
...is WTF the bank app would need to install *ANYTHING* on their phone. SMS is supposed to work on my "dumb" Nokia 6015i http://www.cellphones.ca/cell-phones/nokia-6015i/ I can't install stuff on it. The whole point of SMS autentication is that you use a separate device (cellphone) to authenticate a transaction entered on your PC. Of course, the people who do their banking via mobile phone apps have zilch security.

GSM is not HSPDA, Telus does not have GSM.
GSM is 2G
Telus has HSPDA (or commonly called HSPA).
No GSM-only phone will work on Telus or Bell. Many new 3G phones can use Both, so an unlocked phone can be on either network by just switching sim cards.
Besides having the same Tech. The phones must also support the specific frequencies used by that carrier.
Many European 3G phones will not work in North America. It is rumored that Telus will get both the Milestone and perhaps even the Opus one this year.

Re:Can we haz Streisand Effect plox?
it's a huge and an almost impossible undertaking.
Out of curiosity - why is that?
I realize that finding where that information is stored, listing it, keeping it up to date (a script could notify you of plan changes on the page, though), etc. is a big initial undertaking, but after that...?
In fact.. presuming this site has all the plans listed accurately...
http://www.cellphones.ca/cell-plans/ ...what's to stop them*, or anybody, from taking that data and making a calculator? Or better, the service mentioned in another comment ( http://tech.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1359639&cid=29331273 ) where you can enter your last bill's details (if you get a nice detailed bill) and out pops a recommendation of what provider you should go with.. at least in terms of $$$.( * theoretically, the providers should stop -them- by no longer supplying the data... if in fact the maintainers of that site get the data from the providers )

Canada beats everbody at this game ! :-)
Canada is the champion. You people, in the States, you don't know how good you have it, in comparison. In Canada pricese for telecomm are easily double yours ! Look at this, for instance: http://www.cellphones.ca/cell-plans/960/ Another example, because some people seem to like iPhones ? The iPhone plans in Canada (with Rogers) are more than double what people in the US pay, with AT&T. And on top of it all, we pay federal tax, and then provincial tax on top of it, so then because the 6.95$/month is already a tax (kind of illegal, in the end (longer story), but tax) in the end we pay tax on tax on tax. Howzat ? And still, amazingly enough, right now Bell is losing money on wireless (and no, not even the service is good - it's contracted out in India, and it's miserable) ! This is beyond belief ! I can only assume that these peoples' levels of corruption, laziness and incompetence are unsurpassed (because we must be the first in something !) Little wonder, then, that Canada has a pathetic cellphone penetration rate. PS. I might have used some Engrish here. Sorry - English is not my first language.

But why *must* I have an iPhone?
To me, this product from Samsung is better in every way compared to the latest iphone.

Re:Almost tempted
As one of the links in the article stated, Apple also is not know for making products that can withstand abuse (ie the first-gen Nano screen).
My cell phone is already very scratched (and I take decent care of it).
And you're right - what's the point of running OS X on the phone, yet not offering any way write nifty little chunks of code to make your phone more functional.
In Canada, we only have one GSM cellular service (Rogers), and they aren't going to be ready for this until the end of 2008, according to an article in this mornings Vancouver Sun. That we'll be stuck with a single carrier is due more to the fact that there is only one GSM carrier in the country. -
Re:I hate these things
I was on Nextel using an i85s which has "Direct Connect" until I switched to a Treo on Sprint.
Anyway, PTT is one thing I miss terribly. A good number of my friends and family are on Nextel. The ability to be able to buzz someone and speak and then turn off is very convienent. It's sorta like IM in that respect. You can say something and not have to wait on the line until the other person responds. My brother and I used this feature when we were setting up a wifi run that was two miles long. We could have sat there with the phone on all the time, but instead we just got to push give the information we needed and wait without keeping the phone up to our ears.
Oh, and Direct Connect doesn't HAVE to be on a speaker system.... I never had mine do that unless I was by myself (apartment, car, etc)
