Re:The other half of the blind test...
[UPDATE]
I see further down in the discussion that slashdot reader ~%24sjfsjf replied to "Paint and Sound" giving us this excellent reference Archaeoacoustics which must be what I read about in SciAm many years ago. The relevant quote follows...
"The Woodbridge experiments"
"What is probably the first publication on the subject appeared in 1969, when Richard G. Woodbridge, III related four experiments in a letter in the Proceedings of the IEEE1. In the first experiment, he could pick up the noise produced by the potter's wheel from a pot, using a hand-held crystal cartridge (Astatic Corp. Model 2) with a wooden stylus, connected directly to a set of headphones. The second experiment yielded 60 Hz hum from the motor driving the potter's wheel. More interesting were the following experiments, with a canvas being painted while exposed to sounds. In the third experiment the canvas was painted with a variety of different paints while exposed to martial music from loudspeakers. Some of the brush strokes had a striated appearance, and "short snatches of the music" could be indentified. For the fourth experiment, the painter spoke the word "blue" during a stroke of the brush, and after a long search the word could be heard again when stroking the canvas with the stylus."

Re:Paint and Sound
Indeed, Archaeoacoustics However this technique has never been used to recover sounds from actual historical pots or paintings. I wonder why not, if their tests have been so sucessful... Maybe it only works if you know what you are supposed to be hearing, 'Here's to my sweet Satan' anyone?

Cylinder recordings are actually quite goodMany of the early Edison recordings are of surprisingly good quality. It turns out that the mechanical recording process wasn't too bad. The tinny quality of early cylinder recordings came from the mechanical playback process, which was terrible. When those cylinders are played with modern equipment, they sound much better.
The Amberoll cylinders were tough, too. They had to be, to survive repeated mechanical playback, with a stylus pressure of about a pound. So they're much tougher than vinyl records.
There's now optical equipment for reading damaged or fragile cylinders and records. UCSB isn't using it, but it's available for the tough cases.
Some of these recordings are a century old. The original media are still playable. It's sad that we don't have something to transcribe them to that will be playable a century from now. All we can do is hope that someone will recopy the files periodically.

Re:CDsSo it's your position that "themselves" doesn't add any new meaning to the sentence? Weird. This is what happens when you teach people rules instead of how to write.
Rules have nothing to do with it. It's a matter of identification. GGP was confusing the appositive and reflexive uses of a pronoun.
But, since you asked, in that particular sentence the apposition doesn't add any meaning. This isn't always the case. If I say "The king appeared", I am simply making an objective observation. If I say, "The king himself appeared", my use of the appositive suggests that I consider the king's appearance to be an unusual event. But this is a change in connotation, not in denotation. Moreover, the additional subjective information is conveyed, not by the word itself, but by the fact that I chose to insert it.
What additional meaning did you infer from "themselves" in GGP's sentence, compared to my version?
As for dangling pronouns, when will you folks stop trying to turn English into Latin? English IS NOT Latin! None of these silly rules existed for a bunch of British grammarians decided to model English after Latin several centuries ago. This is bogus.
You are replying to my comment but your last paragraph should be addressed to that comment's parent. I never mentioned the dangling pronoun; I did point out that the suggested alternative was awkward.
Latin's rules came about the same way English grammar rules came about. Latin IS NOT Esperanto or Loglan; it's a natural language. The grammar came about naturally. Later, scholars codified that grammar. You wouldn't find centurions correcting graffiti painters in the streets of the Roman Empire, would you?

Re:Another mysterious media - wow! an 18" record!
Needle recordings have come in a wide variety of sizes, formats, materials, and even encoding methods. World War II-era pre-recorded radio broadcasts often came on records that were close to 17" in diameter. WCPR had at least a pair of 2-foot diameter turntables. I'm sure they are LONG GONE by now.In the past, records have been made out of wax, a thick tin foil, a shellac/cotton, hard rubber, and any number of other semi-hard materials. And while most recordings encoded the wave as effectively wiggling the needle from side-to-side, there were still many that used a bumping-up-and-down, depth method of encoding.
If you are interested enough, you could try contacting one of the many people who like to hand-craft modern equipment to handle older recording technologies.

Optical Turntables
reminds me of Nikita Pashenkov's Spinalcat. read his MIT thesis on the "Optical Turntable as an Interface for Musical Performance" (28mg PDF). here's more information on the optical turntable.

Why does viewing the "internals" shots...
...feel strangely like viewing a page of celebrity nudes? If only they had a half-dozen popups which redirect you to pages like "Emotion Engine acid-strip show!", "two female connectors coupled!", and "Brazilian Plug Pornography!"... (sigh)
