Not necessarily stupid
After reading Intel's description of their product I have no interest, but the mashup idea, despite the stupid name, had its early expression in some really brilliant and useful work. Check out http://www.chicagocrime.org/ for a superb example. Of course, this was created by programming (using the nifty django framework, which uses python, by one of its creators) rather than by clicking on a toolbar.

Re:Mashups are...
So, basically it's things like http://www.chicagocrime.org?

Overlay crime statistics with camera locations
I've been mapping out locations of government surveillance cameras in Chicago for about a year. I'm hoping to eventually overlay the location of surveillance cameras with Chicago-area crime statistics in order to provide data showing the long-term effectiveness these cameras have in deterring or preventing crime in Chicago.
http://chicagocrime.org/ has been a huge inspiration for this project. Chicagocrime.org obtains it's crime data from the Chicago Citizen ICAM database (http://12.17.79.6/) and overlays that data onto Google Maps, providing a visual representation of exactly when and where crime occurs in Chicago. -
Re:google maps
I think the question in the original post is a little vauge on details, so I can't be any more helpful than this. But how about something like the Chicago Crime Database, which uses Google Maps.

Re:Python will kill Ruby
If you really wanted that information, you would have followed the link to the Django website, and found, almost instantly:
Developed and used over the past two years by a newspaper Web operation, Django is well-suited for developing content-management systems. It was designed from scratch to handle the intensive deadlines of a newsroom and the stringent requirements of experienced Web developers.
You'd also have noticed that chicagocrime.org, one of the famous Google Map API using sites we
/.ers have spent so much time drooling over, uses Django. -

Re:Coming soon to a neighborhood near you...
Actually you can do better than that with the chicagocrime.org site -- check out the division into types of crime. So if you want to know where to buy crack or where to get a handjob without leaving your car this map will help you out.

AJAX Won't Deliver...... until every browser does things the same. A lot of the current applications for Google Maps (like this one) don't work in Safari.
Unless standards are complied with fully there can never be "one programming language" for web scripting. Anyone who's had to debug Javascript in IE that works in Firefox knows this.
