Re:Who cares.
Oh you haven't seen them? Sorry bud let old hairyfeet help a brother out. What I'm talking about is something like this that plays everything from NES and GBA to SNES and Genesis for $75, but as you can see here they have all different kinds with lots of different feature sets, going from a low of $40 to a high of $200 so there is something for every taste.
So if you don't want to give your CC out to some Chinamart (I haven't bought from them yet, so I can't say one way or another how good they are) I'd suggest you find the one you want and then look for it on Amazon. I've found most of these are also on Amazon under "MP4 players" which seems to be the code word for emulators from China. But if you like classic games it is a hell of a lot cheaper than anything else out there and a single $10 8gb MicroSD will load the thing up with literally thousands of great classics like Castlevania and Eternal Champions right in your pocket.
Like I said I'll be picking me up one ASAP, but this is the worst time of year for me, what with two kids BDays and my GFs next month it seems my summers are spent buying prezzies for everybody but me
:-(But if you pick one up how about returning the favor and shooting me an email telling if you like it? it is so hard to get honest reviews on the funky stuff.

Re:Either/Or
What the fuck are you babbling about AC? Did I SOUND like a fucking developer? Did the words "fellow retailers" not even ring a TINY bell in your dumbass developer brain, or has the Java finally rotted through that thick melon?
And again you are pointing to developer bullshit whereas I'm telling you what is actually in the stores and which you can look for yourself, just walk into Walmart, Walgreen's Staples, etc, and check for yourself. In my local Walmart there is 1.5, 1.6, 2.1 and 2.2. Walgreen's right now is pushing a 1.4 Droid tablet.
But hell you're a lazy Internet ass so I guess I'll have to do the legwork for you so bitchslap to you, mister "I'm too fucking lazy to make an account" AC. Count up how many CCC 1.x devices are there. Hey, it is just like Hairyfeet said about Droid being awash in CCC running crap! Wow, he may actually know of which he speaks, unlike Mr AC, who only looks at a web page designed to kiss Droid developer booty and thus is about as truthful as MSFT's "Get the facts!" bullshit.

Re:Cherrypal scam?
Hey no problem, happy to help. BTW if you get one how about sending an email telling how it runs? I wouldn't mind picking up one of these for my oldest. He has a badass Turion X2 laptop i just got him, but for note taking this might be killer. From what I understand this "case" fits any of the 7 inchers, and they have several to choose from including a dual ARM if you need more beefy goodness. As you can see you just plug it into the USB port and voila! Instant netbook. It even has a nice leather looking outer cover to help keep your pad from getting scratched.

Re:Cherrypal scam?
I don't think I'd trust Cherrypal after all I've heard about them, especially when you can get the similar Techpad for $155. Nice thing about the Techpad is they also sell a "case" for it on the same site that adds a keyboard and clamshell design for $40, so for less than $200 you have a convertible tablet/netbook. They also has several sizes and specs if you want something more beefy. After all the hubbub over CherryPC I just don't think I'd trust them with my money, no thanks.

Re:oh boy
To Be Or Not To Be...are you feeling blue? Ask your doctor if Cymbalta is right for you
Seriously if they can use ads to get the price down to the magic $100 number I'll be happy to buy eBooks from B&N. Hell I'd even set up an account for my mom and she could buy all her fantasy and horror from them and she could try out ad supported new authors before deciding which ones she likes. I'm sure it won't be long before the Linux guys hack the thing so I'd have a cheap tablet to play with, and mom could have hers as just a eBook to carry when she is at the docs or waiting for her paperbacks to arrive. I would have said B&N would be DOA 6 months ago, but if they can get these suckers down to the right price point I could see them taking off. At $250 it is too close to netbook price, hell I can get a 7 inch Android tablet for $160, but if they got it to $100 it would be worth it as an impulse buy for me.

Re:Focus!
Why not just get one of those iPad knockoffs? You can get one of those for $155, it comes with Android, and since it is ARM I'm sure there is an open Linux you can run as well. If you want to have more than just books in a box and want to run your own formats it looks like the way to go.

APad with Android
Orphan Electronics Apad M800 $150-$200 Street Price
http://pricedinchina.com/buy-orphan-iped-mid-slate---m800-wifi-7-android-tablet-pc---m800-iped.aspx
It looks like China already beat everyone including to a degree the Open Source community with a clone of the iPad. They are already selling an iPad clone in China. It looks just like the iPad in everyway, but the guts. I understand it is suppose to have an 600mhz Intel CPU inside, and 2gb of storage with USB port and I thought a memory card. It also has Wifi and web cam built in.
Seems like this thing beats the iPad in almost every area that people complain about for the iPad. Much lower price, same size screen (7"), open and can do all the things the iPad can't or won't. Seems like a pretty good iPad killer to me, and it run Android already so there isn't really an issue of limited apps either. Runs Flash, MKV/H.264, MPEG 1&2, RM/RMBV, MP3, WMA, APE, FLAC, AAC,AC3, WAV.
If I were going to buy a tablet computer I would certainly give this one a serious look.
If the screen isn't big enough for you. I have seen other Orphan Electronics tablets advertised with bigger screens, but of course they cost more than this version does.
Here is one with a 10" screen for $290 and has more storage and still uses Android.
http://chinagrabber.com/buy-10-orphan-iped-m16-1024-x-600-android-apad-wifi-tablet-pc-m16-mid.aspxAt $100 retail in China and $150 retail on some web sites. Seems like this is exactly the kind of table that all the Linux companies like Ubuntu should be looking to use as their hardware platform. At the price of $100-$150 it beats even most eBook readers on price, and it has wifi built in so adding more books/music/software isn't an issue, not to mention the USB port on it.

Re:The cheap laptops are available
yes cheap laptops exist, but the point is the last cheap Hivision laptop that showed up everywhere never materialized so it's safe to assume this might be vaporware as well.
The hivision mini note was reported to offer Linux, wifi, 1gb flash storage, 3 USB ports, ethernet, SDHC card reader, audio in and out, voice chat and the multi-tabbed firefox browser.
The devices you linked to run the 6 yr old Windows CE 5.0 OS which was popular for $200 PDAs in 2004, 266 and 400mhz processors, and no mention of the type of browser but claim to play flash videos by downloading them and watching on a flash player. The only difference between these "cheap laptops" and PDAs from 2004 is the $100 price difference, the larger screen and the attached keyboard.
I really hope I'm wrong, I'd love to see a $100 Android laptop because someone already offers the $100 Android PDA
